vlaube··on An Alternative Operator Precedence Rule (2013)
Interesting, kind of like a code style checker.
vlaube··on Diet that mimics fasting appears to slow aging
You can also automatically generate recipes using auto-soylent: https://github.com/nick/auto-soylent The nutrient profile can be taken from the patent.
vlaube··on God's Lonely Programmer
This sounds like a really nice idea.
vlaube··on The Scientific 7-Minute Workout
I prefer my 7 Minute Workout Bash-Script: https://github.com/vlaube-de/7min-workout
vlaube··on Racing the Beam (2009)
While we are on the topic of post-mortems for old games, I enjoyed Bob Pape's writeup of his port of R-Type to the ZX Spectrum. You can get the free eBook here: http://bizzley.com/
vlaube··on Show HN: Got my Pebble and built a seven minute workout watchapp today
I too wrote a 7 minute workout app, only this time as a shell script.

vlaube··on We Need A Standard Layered Image Format
This is an interesting problem, I wonder if Photoshop or The Gimp actually do something fancy here. There shouldn't be much of a problem replacing files when the files never get bigger and uncompressed ZIPs are used (compressed would make any sense for PNGs and JPGs anyway). Small variations in file size could be compensated with some kind of padding, but it seems to me that we are approaching a point of complexity here, where we should just use another kind of filesystem, one that supports fragmented data.
vlaube··on We Need A Standard Layered Image Format
The file extension actually makes a difference here, CBRs are RAR compressed archives.
vlaube··on HTML5 Tetris - Practice Work
Here is mine: http://valentinlaube.de/temp/tetris.html

Writing a simple game is a great way to practice your programming skills.

vlaube··on HTML5 Tetris - Practice Work
I think you misunderstood the intentions here, the game was not supposed to be a demonstration of what is possible with HTML5.

The author probably just wanted to show what he does to practice his programming skills.

vlaube··on Should error messages apologize?
Yes, "I'm sorry" always carries the connotation of "this won't happen again" with it. If you are sorry all the time, it doesn't actually mean anything.

Like everywhere else the basic design principle of contrast also holds in the tone of error messages.

If you shout all the time, nobody will listen when you really mean it. Likewise, if you are sorry all the time, nobody will take your apology serious.

vlaube··on Show HN: my useless weekend project, add speech bubbles to images
Nice. Reminds me of my Bubble Project concept from a couple of years ago. http://valentinlaube.de/projects/bubble%20project/

Edit: check out the interactive prototype on the bottom of the page

vlaube··on Show HN: I built myself a friend.
When there are no pictures, people will create their own images in their minds which are probably wrong. You don't want that.
vlaube··on Bitcoins Cryptocurrency explained by Steve Gibson
You can download the Bitcoin software here: http://www.bitcoin.org/ and get your first Bitcoins here: http://freebitcoins.appspot.com/
vlaube··on JPEG canaries: exposing on-the-fly recompression
My impression was that it had to do with the gamma correction of PNG images. The 4chan thumbnail generator seems to ignore the gamma correction while the browser does not.
vlaube··on Ex-girlfriend exacts revenge through Google Images
The article makes it sound like she is some kind of genius but using http://www.memegenerator.net/ is not rocked science. Pretty clever though.
vlaube··on UltraEdit text editor for Mac - Now Available
They are just examples of things he disagrees with, and not meant as a comparison. But yes, there are probably better examples in this context.

The point is that you don't have to support people you disagree with.

vlaube··on UltraEdit text editor for Mac - Now Available
This. But I should probably thank him, because after reading that I searched and found an editor that suited me better and was Open Source. :)
vlaube··on UltraEdit text editor for Mac - Now Available
I liked UltraEdit back in my Windows days, but this story kind of put me off: http://www.ultraedit.com/company/IDM_full_story.html
