vkat··on Show HN: 14 Habits of Highly Productive Developers – New Book
Thanks, bought the book.
vkat··on Many Covid Patients Have Terrifying Hallucinations and Delirium
What is covid toes/fingers?
vkat··on Executive order expected to suspend H-1B, other visas until end of year
> They will live in anxiety, fear and uncertainty.

This. All my adult life(15 years) I have worked and lived here and my parents are old and you never know what can happen with current pandemic. Being from India the green card wait is over 11 years and increasing so I keep waiting. There needs to be a distinction between legit employers and ones who abuse the system.

vkat··on Lawmakers begin bipartisan push to cut off police access to military-style gear
I have never understood why the police in the US shoot to kill(chest area) as opposed to disarming or injuring by shooting in the leg.
vkat··on Why is Kubernetes getting so popular?
Both use controller-runtime underneath so there is not much difference between the two. I personally have used both and prefer kubebuilder
vkat··on Tell HN: Interviewed with Triplebyte? Your profile is about to become public
ugh! If not for hacker news front page, I would have ignored this.
vkat··on Ignore Sunk Costs (2009)
The decade long bull market has been really good to a lot of active retail traders.
vkat··on Thank You, Guido
I think this is what experience teaches. Sometimes I have the itch to write clever code but then more often than not it ends up being cryptic to other developers. If you really have to write clever code, wrap it up in a well defined interface and write a bunch of tests.
vkat··on What Happened to OpenStack?
I think the battle for running virtual machines in the enterprise was already won by vmware and so OpenStack became a niche for service providers wanting to do Nfvi workloads and had resources to afford dedicated teams to running OpenStack.

Kubernetes on the other hand capitalized on the need for running and orchestrating containers. Kubernetes also got a few things that right such as well documented and prescriptive set of tools one could use to get dev and production cluster up.

On a separate note, having worked on OpenStack I can also attest that the code was gross, not so much in kubernetes.

vkat··on Kubernetes 1.12
kubelet tls bootstrap is a feature I am looking forward to. We just finished dev work and testing to get to 1.11 as we have to support various cni's and automated upgrades from 1.10, it will probably be couple of months before we get to 1.12
vkat··on New York Times Co. Reports $24M Profit, Thanks to Digital Subscribers
I used to do that then one day I read that there were layoffs to cut costs, I subscribed that very day. If you can afford to pay and you consume the service then $9 per month is not a lot.
vkat··on Cisco plans to acquire cybersecurity firm Duo Security for $2.35B
In my experience Cisco leaves acquisition alone for at least couple of years providing its brand and sales force. If the acquisition isn't proving its worth and/or if revenue growth is staying flat then start packing your bags.

On the other hand I don't like how the acquisition's leadership gets to absorb other BU's which are targeting similar market space because there is a lot of time and effort that gets invested into integrating teams working culture and style. Also the incoming teams fight to keep their product portfolios alive which leads to sub-optimal decisions.

vkat··on Stephen Hawking has died
He is going to remembered for a long time. RIP
vkat··on Kubermesh: self-hosted/healing/provisioning, partial-mesh network K8s cluster
For #1 have you tried using local storage available in 1.7, see example https://github.com/kubernetes-incubator/external-storage/tre...
vkat··on Kubernetes at GitHub
Assuming they are using RedHat, they only recently announced overlay2 will be fully supported in newest release 7.4
vkat··on Ford Motor Is Replacing Mark Fields as C.E.O
nyt gives you get 10 articles for free per month, although I decided to pay $10 per month. Their quality of journalism is pretty good for what they charge.
vkat··on The Kansas Experiment (2014) [audio]
There was nytimes article some time back comparing how CA and KS did after former increased state taxes and the latter decreased. I am sure there are other factors but the gist of it was cutting taxes does not necessarily result in economic expansion. GDP of Kansas decreased over the period whereas CA's increased.
vkat··on Tiny Linux distro that runs the entire OS as Docker containers
linuxkit -> https://github.com/linuxkit/linuxkit
vkat··on A new upstream project to break up Docker into independent components
I think he means Microsoft. There was a lot of emphasis on playing nice with windows in the conference. Good for developers all around. We were joking that it might be setting up the stage for an acquisition. I am personally hoping Docker follows the path of Redhat.
vkat··on A new upstream project to break up Docker into independent components
I thought LinuxKit and InfraKit were great announcements.
vkat··on Brains Sweep Themselves Clean of Toxins During Sleep (2013)
Makes me think sweeping is analogous to a halt the world garbage collector.
vkat··on As New Zealand Courts Tech Talent, Isolation Becomes a Draw
I lived in Kansas City metro for 6 years and politics is rarely discussed at work. The people I hang out with are very welcoming and don't treat immigrants any differently. When there was racial induced killing in one of the suburbs(Olathe) there was an outpouring of grief and support. Basic human premise.
vkat··on A Roadmap to Merging 'dep' into the Go Toolchain
Started with dep recently on a real go project at work. It worked initially fine until I started adding dependencies and I had to hunt down the right commit hash by looking at the dependencies. I am probably going to stick with it and maybe contributing upstream as well.
vkat··on India's tech industry panics over U.S. plans to change high-skilled visas
I used to work in mid-west tech and 130k was something a development manager would get which was was 4 levels above an entry level engineer.
vkat··on Ask HN: What did you do after quitting the IT industry and how have things been?
How does one go about renting a small piece of land for hobby farming?
vkat··on Cisco confirms it’s killing Intercloud public cloud in March 2017
There are still investments in the Openstack space and I work on one of them(Managed openstack deployments). Intercloud was previously EOL'd 4 months ago, this is just the formal announcement.
vkat··on Running Docker in production for 6 months
Logging we’ve frequently experienced issues with django autoreload and delay in flushing logs

>> Try using "ENV PYTHONUNBUFFERED 1" in your dockerfile

vkat··on Some questions about Docker and rkt
Is there a way to prevent other processes from reading environment variables?
vkat··on Some questions about Docker and rkt
TIL: live-restore
vkat··on Channels adopted as an official Django project
Reading the blog post the complaints on no Data Integrity seem to be a symptom of not using models/data store correctly. Problems not specific to Django or any other web framework.

1. Data races - Use a combination of model versioning and uniqueness checks to prevent data races.

2. get_or_create/update_or_create - Duh, the atomicity is enforced by the parameters you use. Create unique indexes on the model for the things you expect to use in your parameters
