vkat··on How Is Data Stored?
I always wondered why L1 caches couldn't just be bigger. L1 caches need to be close to clock speed of the core and bigger caches means increased latency because the bottleneck is length of the bit line and number of word lines which increases with capacity.

vkat··on Ask HN: Who is using C++ as the main language for new project?
I am a developer who has never worked on C++ but want to get into it full time, I did C in college, Java for the first few years in my career then Python and now exclusively Go.

When I pick up new languages and I did that for a bit with Rust, I read a bit then code a bit and found https://github.com/rust-lang/rustlings very helpful. Is there an equivalent for C++? What would be the top resource to get started on modern C++? Thanks in advance.

vkat··on Thermal Pad ‘Mod’ Makes M2 MacBook Air Faster Than 13″ M2 Pro
One of my biggest complaints with laptops is the heat and that I always end up putting like a book underneath so that my lap isn't in directly contact with the heat. If apple intended to keep the outer shell cooler, I will any day take it over the slightly higher performance that folks are getting with a thermal pad.
vkat··on Broadcom to acquire VMware for $61B
Yes it is a community project but VMware engineers play a big part in maintaining as it is foundational to the kubernetes product that VMware sells. Open source does not mean it runs by itself.
vkat··on Broadcom to acquire VMware for $61B
Multi billion dollar businesses. Just look at AWS EKS.
vkat··on Broadcom to acquire VMware for $61B
Quite agree, Dell/EMC treated VMware as independent.
vkat··on Broadcom to acquire VMware for $61B
For anyone who doesn't know, VMware has doubled down in open source in the past 3 years, especially Kubernetes. I don't think Broadcom really understands how investment in open source works or for that matter cares.

Half of my org of ~500 engineers works on upstream projects.

Disclaimer: Current employee of VMware

vkat··on Backlash as VMware Considers to Hire Fallen AWS Exec with Discrimination Probe
I am empathetic to both sides and strongly believe in second chances. With the amount of push back this person is getting, the chances of him being successful in their role is slim to none, if I were them I would decline the offer at this point.

vkat··on Tesla Model 3 Owner Discovers Car Was Delivered Missing a Brake Pad
They do have a way of creating distractions to bury the stories that they don't like. The Cyberwhistle was launched just around the time of the whistle blower stories that were coming out. Kind of smart and I did not realize the connection until after a while.
vkat··on Tesla Model 3 Owner Discovers Car Was Delivered Missing a Brake Pad
>So having a Dealer deal with it helped? As in they did the inspection for you and got it fixed?

No it wasn't the dealer that replaced the wheel but a receiving port of the manufacturer in the east coast.

vkat··on Tesla Model 3 Owner Discovers Car Was Delivered Missing a Brake Pad
I did not buy my car from the dealership lot. They had to put in an order and I waited 3 months for it to be finally available for me to pick up. I could track everything happening with the car. The car was sitting in the container port for an usually long time (2 weeks) so when I asked my dealer he tracked it down and said there was curb damage to the wheel and they had to wait for replacement.

Now, I don't expect this kind of service from Tesla but my point is it doesn't matter if you are able to test drive it or not from the dealership and inspect for defects; the manufacturer should have a rigorous quality process that doesn't let these kind of slip ups to happen and if it does happen make it right by the customer.

vkat··on TikTok streaming software is an illegal fork of OBS
Copy/paste without attribution to license or permission is more blatant.
vkat··on TikTok streaming software is an illegal fork of OBS
In all the enterprise companies I worked for we are drilled with required learning and assessments which often include training on software licenses. The aim of these training is devs to keep an eye for license and defer to someone higher up if in doubt. These processes are manual and catch only so much.

In companies with mature software processes there is always tooling that will block a release if it finds unacceptable license. To me it looks like TikTok hasn't properly invested in tooling and this somehow slipped.

vkat··on Zillow to stop flipping homes, loses more than $550M, lays off 25% of staff
My agent was traditional and would get a standard 2.5% commission if I went through with the purchase.
vkat··on Zillow to stop flipping homes, loses more than $550M, lays off 25% of staff
The seller agent was a Zillow employee since the home is owned by Zillow. My agent was not a Zillow employee.
vkat··on Zillow to stop flipping homes, loses more than $550M, lays off 25% of staff
We recently went through buying a Zillow owned house in Phoenix AZ and response and attitude from the selling agent and zillow was pathetic. They took 3 full days to send the signed contract after they told us we our offer was accepted.

Couldn't get the inspection done within first 9 days(inspection contingency is 10 days) of signing the contract and only got a response when we said we were going to cancel escrow. Got the inspection complete on the 10th day and there were so many issues with the house and repairs done that we felt it was not worth the negotiation to sort it out with Zillow and decided to back out. Not sure if this is a general trend but my agent was fed up and he said he will never deal with Zillow again. This was 3 weeks ago.

vkat··on Insurance is like gambling, don't overdo it
If the earthquake was so big then coming up with the cash needed for the deductible would be at the bottom of my list. Instead I would try to find an alternative place to live for 6-12 months. If there was an insurance that covers living and mortgage expenses for an year, I would totally buy that.
vkat··on Insurance is like gambling, don't overdo it
yeah, exactly my thinking. Insurers would just go bust.
vkat··on Insurance is like gambling, don't overdo it
I live in CA and often considered getting earthquake insurance but the premium and deductible are bonkers that it almost never makes sense to me. A $2500 premium for 20% deductible on everything separately(construction, personal belongings, construction premium, loss of use...). So in the event of a massive earthquake I am supposed to shell out > $200k out of pocket for the deductible before the insurance kicks in, why would anyone pay for this?
