vive-la-liberte··on We ditched Google Analytics
robots.txt. Still, I see no reason to remove the site from Google search.
vive-la-liberte··on The Linguistics of 'YouTube Voice'
>English has me symbol for schwa.

I think you use Dvorak and mistyped "no" as "ne" and your phone auto-corrected it to "me". Am I right?

vive-la-liberte··on Raspberry Pi Zero vs. Elliott 405
>this shouldn't be able to store this much

Same here. I was thinking about how many CD-ROMs it would take to store a certain amount of information, as a measure of just how much data something amounted to. Then I thought that with microSD cards, the same amount of data would sound much less impressive.

vive-la-liberte··on Google sheep view
Same here. Would like to know where http://36.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_maf5ynOadW1qzun8oo1_1280.j... was taken.
vive-la-liberte··on dd – Destroyer of Disks (2008)
Correct. In these kinds of situations I usually do

sudo sh -c 'blah blah blah >> file'
but I don't like it when I have to do that.
vive-la-liberte··on Gathering information about sponsored content
Minutes to the hour, I guess. I agree with the GP that the color choice was poor. Also the minute markers don't make them look very clock like.
vive-la-liberte··on Building for HTTP/2
When you update application.js, the hash of application.js itself will change as well. If you include the hash of application.js in its filename, I don't see the problem.

If you do not include the hash of application.js in its filename then I think the main problem is whoever decided to use hashes for some scripts but not for others.

That being said, I don't use gulp and all that stuff. It seems to me that some people get so caught up in technology that they

1) Reinvent the wheel a million times. I admit that make has its short comings but I think a similarly general build tool is the way to go. Look into tup, they know what's up.

2) Don't notice that they are sitting atop a tower of abstractions and that their tower is starting to become unstable.

3) Are pulling in massive amounts of scripts as dependencies to build something that could've been implemented with little to no scripting at all, and with their high bandwith workstations and latest computers and devices they don't notice the fact that while they are trying to reduce load times (which by itself is a worthy goal) the browsers of their visitors are crashing because rendering these websites take more ram than is available on many devices. Jesus, fuck!

So that was a bit of a rant. Sorry about that, I guess.

vive-la-liberte··on Tarantulas evolved blue colour 'at least eight times'
>The fact that we can represent "color" as an RGB triple is purely an artifact of the ways our eyes are built.

I've thought a bit about this before and came to think, what if humanity disappeared and only our creations were left and they were discovered by an alien species but to them it would just look like the way we see the colonies of ants, the shell of shell fish, etc., that is to say just a pile of matter organized for housing, and the aliens were unable to percieve the fact that we have encoded vast amounts of knowledge in our artifacts. That would've been quite a cosmic tragedy.

vive-la-liberte··on Formula E to feature autonomous car racing
Racing, aside from the entertainment value it provides to onlookers, also server another important function, namely to showcase cars. I think auto makers will want to keep collisions to a minimum, lest public opinion on the traffic safety of autonomous cars is negatively impacted.
vive-la-liberte··on Show HN: Easy Forth
I often use dc(1) so my first instinct was to type "1 2 3 +" into the input without intermediate linebreaks. I was delighted to see that this was correctly understood to mean what I wanted to express instead of it doing something silly like taking just the first int of my string or trying to parse the string as a whole straight to int.

These are the sort of things which encourage readers to read on :)

Edit: Unfortunatelly, when I try to scroll and read the rest, the input field steals focus rendering me unable to continue. Firefox on Android.

vive-la-liberte··on Raspberry Pi Zero: the $5 computer
Not just an ethernet cable, I think. From the images it looks like there's no Ethernet port on the RPi Zero.
vive-la-liberte··on The TTY demystified
You are the first person I've seen to ever include the rightmost dot in the domain name in a comment on the internet!
vive-la-liberte··on The Anonymous 'war on ISIS' is already falling apart
Of course it is. The abilities of 'Anonymous' largely stop at LOIC DDoS.
vive-la-liberte··on Python 3.5 type hinting in PyCharm 5
Python is not C so why should it suddenly "pretend to be" when doing type hinting? Also, I personally find that the type declaration format of C is one of my least favorite things about C.
vive-la-liberte··on Baffling Web Trackers by Obfuscating Your Movements Online
I use uBlock Origin and unlike with NoScript which I was using for a while before, haven't had a single problem.
vive-la-liberte··on Google and ASUS Launch the $85 Chromebit, a Chrome OS Desktop on an HDMI Stick
>it’s a pretty unassuming device that’s mostly meant to disappear behind your screen anyway (hence why I’m not sure why there is an orange version)

One reason for having an orange one is it's easier to spot when it's time to unplug.

vive-la-liberte··on Adsuck – a small DNS server that spoofs blacklisted addresses
But having the entries in /etc/hosts should on Unix in most cases cause your computer to find it there right away without DNS lookup. Are you using dnsmasq locally on the host computer or to serve other computers as well? In the latter case, I see the point (though if I were to use dnsmasq I wouldn't intermix the hosts file).
vive-la-liberte··on Auto companies are lacking key ingredients for the future of the automobile

vive-la-liberte··on Xv6
OP article lists a lot of schools using it as well.
vive-la-liberte··on Desk: A lightweight workspace manager for the shell
I have four directories which I frequently use. For one of them, I commit as let's say me@example.com and in the other three as me@example.edu.

So first of all, I have a bash function declared in my bashrc which takes one argument -- the domain -- and sets a few evironment variables such as GIT_AUTHOR_EMAIL and GIT_COMMITER_EMAIL.

Next I have one two-letter alias and three three-letter aliases which all cd to their respective paths and call the function to set the env vars.

Finally, I have two-letter aliases to git add, git diff, git commit, git push and so on.

Dead simple and works great. All I need is my bashrc.

vive-la-liberte··on Gene Amdahl has died
The black bar looks strange on my tablet, not like I remember it from last time. The black is now about 1/7th of the bar and the remainder is orange. I seem to recall that the entire bar was black last time they did it, which I think worked much better.
vive-la-liberte··on Firefox for iOS now available
That is a good point. To me, however, an important part of the appeal of Firefox has always been a belief that having multiple competing rendering engines is fundamentaly good for the open web -- that it keeps the HTML and CSS standards from growing in too much of an implementation specific direction. I had thought, perhaps without grounds, that this view was shared by Mozilla.
vive-la-liberte··on Firefox for iOS now available
Mozilla disallows others from using the Firefox trademark for custom compiled versions, which is understandable and agreeable. What I don't get is how they're then willing to put their name on something where they are forced to use webkit. Fear of losing market share? Hope that Apple will allow them to use Gecko or Servo in the future?
