vitro··on I said no and Apple said yes
Mate / Cinnamon is quite nice, actually, for those who haven't gotten used to the Mac-style app bar.

For software issues they have a real person - me, and for hardware ones they can be sent to ANY repair service. Just close to them there are like three vendors who do hardware work. But the thing is, for last 5 years or so I do not remember they actually had some issue with their box. Things just work and updates do not overhaul your system out of nowhere.

Mac build quality is nice indeed. And Nvidia sometimes doesn't play along, but that is a small price to pay for an everyday peace of mind.

My both parents use linux and are happy with it. If you mostly use just the browser and reading e-mails, I don't see any better system even for someone who is non-technical.

When those unfortunate ones need my help. Or when teaching kids in school.

Not trying to start flamewars, but more and more I wonder how much are people willing to put up with such practices. On linux for 15+ years and everytime I try to use mac or win, it is an ordeal. And ads. F*cking ads in a system someone has purchased. And spying. Really user hostile environment. No, thank you.
vitro··on Dario, Please
Exactly, as if you'd have a mad dog that bites others, it's your responsibility to have it on the leash.
vitro··on Europe's summer drought is so extreme that desertification is a growing threat
Their money comes from somewhere, and that somewhere is many times a source of great suffering. If they had to make that somewhere adhere to rules or abide by law or stop exploiting others - humans or nature - it would cost them a great amount of money.
vitro··on Czechia moves to ban mobile phones in schools from September 2027
Well yes. A teacher can have a box for phones, but kids need to put the phone there themselves. Of course, depends on the relation teacher has with their kids, but that's how you should do it by law.

And even then, if the teacher trips the box, it is on them to reimburse owners for broken phones.

But if kids refuse to put their phones away during classes, teachers have no right to take them since they are the kids' personal property. And yes, it is in the school rules that you cannot use your phone during class.

My SO teaches English and struggles with it permanently. Kids are on their phones and not paying attention to the lecture. And no support from the headmaster. Other teachers claim they do not have the problem to save face, but then you talk to an expat teacher who was in their class for observation and hear something else.

Right, there can be a religion without spirituality and there can also be a spirituality without religion.

Wish you all the best!

Volunteer. Always had good experiences with it and made some nice memories and connections I would not have otherwise.

I know people who would purchase solar panels and batteries, but they do not have enough capital to do so.

In Czech Republic as well. You need to have driven certain amount of hours, have attented theory lessons, then test, followed by a test drive with a policeman.
vitro··on VibeThinker: 3B param model that beats Opus 4.5 on reasoning with novel SFT+GRPO
Couldn't you build some internal knowledge that would stay and you could teach a model this way. A very fast local memory of some sort. You could also specialize model this way so it is very skilled in your domain. The more you use it, the smarter it gets. I guess the problem is for the model to decide whether the information stored in memory is sufficient or not.

My car leaks oil. So I refill it here and there. This fixes issue with any car maker and does not require action of any other actor.
vitro··on A Japanese glossary of chopsticks faux pas (2022)
Maybe some of them may have had a purpose. With this one, if you were used to putting your elbows on the table and there were more people around, you just took up too much space and made it unpleasant for others around you.

You can self-host their notification server, and in their app you provide this server's url.

But how ntfy does it then? It is one app that allows you to subscribe to multiple different notification endpoints. I have uptime notifications set up this way.

Wouldn't it be possible for Zulip to go this route as well?

True, no phones, no distractions, I can see someone who finds their passion early on to get this good.
vitro··on U.S. Emissions Jumped in 2025 as Coal Power Rebounded
Cheap? Depends on how you look at it. What about treating all those respiratory illnesses caused by burning coal? Is that accounted for in the price of the electricity as well?

I sometimes think of it as a sculptor analogy.

Some famous sculptors had an atelier full of students that helped them with mundane tasks, like carving out a basic shape from a block of stone.

When the basic shape was done, the master came and did the rest. You may want to have the physical exercise of doing the work yourself, but maybe someone sometimes likes to do the fine work and leave the crude one to the AI.

Hi, importing Postman's environments would be nice.
vitro··on Zed is now available on Windows
Other editors, at least, display a pop-up indicating that the file has changed on disk in the meantime and ask me if I want to reload the file or overwrite it with my current buffer, or do nothing (geany editor does that, for example). And it happens immediately as soon as I hover over the editor's window.

Interestingly, Zed displays the change right away for the first time, but any other edits are not picked up. I'm using Zed's installer, Zed updated to the latest version, no containers or virtual fs, my partitions are ext4.

vitro··on Zed is now available on Windows
One of the reasons why I'm not fully switching yet is a Zed's inability to update the currently open file with changes made elsewhere [1].

All the other editors I use are aware of outside changes, but not Zed. And I'm just not willing to close and reopen the file to get fresh contents. Eventually, I'll forget to do it and lose some work.
