vital_beach··on Delve sets the record straight on anonymous attacks
their entire defense is "we are totally trustworthy! it's not our fault some 'bad client' opened and shared a spreadsheet we negligently used as a publicly accessible database of our fraud"
vital_beach··on Claude Code feels like magic because it is iterative
nope, just running and stopping dev servers. It may have done a pfkill once or twice if something was hanging?

Either way, using it was the API credits was fine for a little over a month, so I don't know if it was that. I got autobanned only a few hours after paying for Max and reauthing the client to use the subscription. My actual usage of it didn't change.

vital_beach··on Claude Code feels like magic because it is iterative
I really enjoyed Claude Code. I was using it on some side projects for about a month with API credits, and I signed up for the Max subscription shortly after it started working with Code. Overnight, my account was banned, and I have no idea why.

It sucks getting banned from such a cool and helpful tool :(

vital_beach··on Ask HN: What are the funnest data sets you’ve played with?
that's honestly a better route. battlescribe has more data, but the schema is a nightmare and gives me headaches.
vital_beach··on Ask HN: What are the funnest data sets you’ve played with?
Wahpedia has a pretty unusual Warhammer 40k dataset

any CFAA concerns when used in the wrong place and found out (airplanes)?
vital_beach··on A Cypherpunk’s Manifesto (1993)
You've stumbled upon a door where your mind is the key. There are none who will lend you guidance; these trials are yours to conquer alone. Entering here will take more than mere logic and strategy, but the criteria are just as hidden as what they reveal. Find yourself, and you will find the very thing hidden behind this page. Beyond here is something like a utopia - beyond here is what.cd

This is a mirage.

vital_beach··on Universal Paperclips
this is game is why i figured out how to use xdotool to make an autoclicker
vital_beach··on Apply for student loan debt forgiveness
i agree. i agree. i agree.

i also know that the interested parties already have my info and that i would like the 20k writedown. it really does suck

vital_beach··on Apply for student loan debt forgiveness
it would be even easier to start with how current cost education is handled. my student loan situation would be much better if my advisor at my state uni had actually been incentivized to be an advisor. instead she put off meeting with me until the second semester of my senior year. note i didn't say last semester of my senior year.
vital_beach··on Apply for student loan debt forgiveness
to be very honest, if this is all it takes, it's the easiest gov form i've ever filled out. i'm loving it
vital_beach··on White House is pushing ahead research to cool Earth by reflecting back sunlight
I don't know how the science side of it works out in the real world, but the Snowpiercer take on this is pretty terrifying
vital_beach··on Lufthansa bans AirTags in checked luggage
How will this apply when a 3rd party slips an airtag in to track the traveler (ex. SO, PI, stalker)? This seems like a great way to potentially mess with someone they don't want flying around.
vital_beach··on Questioning vs. Asking
idk about offensive, but "why" questions can come across as more accusatory/interrogative depending on the context/relationship
vital_beach··on Programs that were launched with impossible command line options
if the start menu was just a list of programs you may want to launch, it could probably be started and killed as needed...
vital_beach··on A realization of why email is critical infrastructure for the Internet
edit to add I agree. the comment below is just how I think it would actually turn out.

---

Avoiding the SSN issue, I think this still comes down to either forcing 3rd parties to host email accounts or gov hosting said email accounts. The former leads to "free" but not free email (like TurboTax) with the former or an outright loss in privacy with the latter.

vital_beach··on A realization of why email is critical infrastructure for the Internet
arbitrary account shutdown is a known issue with free email. losing your gmail account without explanation and with no recourse can be an awful situation for anyone, especially for vulnerable populations. This leaves the options of forcing private orgs to maintain email addresses or have a gov email for every citizen, both of which have significant drawbacks.
vital_beach··on A realization of why email is critical infrastructure for the Internet
while I agree with the idea of emails that can't be arbitrarily shutdown, SSN-xx-HERE@citizen.gov sounds like all kinds of awful. It will either be instantly unusable or require a gov approved SPAM filter, both of which are bad. It also seems like a good vector to force a backdoor on all comms.
vital_beach··on After 10 years, HTTPS is truly everywhere
I've had several instances of ACME bot deciding to randomly fail behind Cloudflare, so I've switched to using CF Origin certs on a few hosts. It's not ideal, but it works for my public needs. I'm still running PiHole locally with no certs, which I dislike.
vital_beach··on After 10 years, HTTPS is truly everywhere
fun fact: even neverssl.com has https now, which it promises to never have lol
vital_beach··on After 10 years, HTTPS is truly everywhere
I guess it's time to uninstall their HTTPS Everywhere extension https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2021/09/https-actually-everywh...
vital_beach··on Best open source 3D printers 2021 (with links to designs)
I absolutely love my Prusa i3 MK3S+. I've printed almost 900m of filament since August, almost all of it going into tabletop minis. Sure, you can tell they're printed, but they still look good.

I bought the assembled version because I'm good at losing screws. I immediately made some stupid decisions and factory reset everything. Fallout? Took something like 10 min to fully auto-calibrate and get up and running again. It was magic.

It took some trial and error in the slicer to get the support settings where I wanted, but this thing just pumps out whatever I give it now.

PrusaSlicer is also really awesome. It doesn't do tree supports like Cura, but it auto-fixes pretty much every model related issue on load. A lot of the other slicers I've looked at either don't work on linux or can't deal with model issues from online .stls.

I would apply just to interview with dang
vital_beach··on Ubisoft deleted account with hundreds of dollars’ worth of games for inactivity
whoops! you didn't drive your car for a year during the pandemic, we own it now. /s

This type of anticonsumerism would get so much attention if it were in another field. I can only hope it happens here.

vital_beach··on Ubisoft deleted account with hundreds of dollars’ worth of games for inactivity
they had a database entry linking his account to a purchase. it's not like his access to the game was forgotten. they just chose not to honor it. a blockchain proof isn't any more compelling than the info they already had + his payment records.

vital_beach··on AMP Has Irreparably Damaged Publishers’ Trust in Google-Led Initiatives
I remember EULALing my privacy away because Chrome was fast and freaking awesome. Now I have to block AMP links. I was once naive, now I'm more willing to deal with firefox
vital_beach··on Signal community: Reminder: Please be nice
I'm in the unique position to interact with clients from the 3 digit to 8 digit ARR range, and it's so hard managing expectations across the group. All of these clients are massive, it's just a matter of what stage of adoption they're at with us. More 0s = all hands on deck, two 0s = "I can't give you any kind of timeline and may never be able to". All of this is to say please be kind, it's generally not up to the people you're yelling at, even if you're paying for it.
vital_beach··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
Redline the hell out of your contract or follow the standard "Don't be a problem for us" rules. It's really not that hard.
vital_beach··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
How would you define that, though? Popular vote, number of reps, number of senators, governors? There's no clean break.

Edit just to point out this is a bad idea
