vishaldpatel··on Show HN: I made this simple YouTube playlist maker. What do you think?
You can double-click to play a video. You can also click and drag to rearrange the playlist! This will automatically update the address bar so you can then share the rearranged playlist.

vishaldpatel··on Show HN: I made this simple YouTube playlist maker. What do you think?
I'd like to make the "Search youtube" visible for first-time users without making it in-your-face for repeat use. I'll play with the contrast a bit more. Thanks! :)

Idea for business.. or umm.. money:

- A campaign by low pollution lighting using a similar set of images, except this time, with low emissions lights on. There'd be a before and after to show the difference between bright lights and less bright lights.

vishaldpatel··on If there is a war of programming languages who would you support and why?
Great. Now there will be "what LOTR character is your favorite programming language and why?" interview questions. And you better not be the fucking weeping willow!

There are times when a client has a graphic designer they usually work with and bring me in to do the technical end. There are also times when a client expects me to handle the coordination - making sure I have what I need from different stakeholders to drive the project forward. This is normal for me, although work that involves a series of well-defined bugs and features does occasionally turn up.

Hmm, I don't think I was trying to attack his position as much as posing a question. Any company that wants to hire a foreigner thinks about the ease with which they can be brought on board. Companies that are used to doing so in India tend to have people that can navigate the system so the employees-to-be don't have to.

We have a habit of looking for magic pills. Many self-help books advertise themselves as magic pills because they know that it sells. I've read my share of self-help books and articles - specifically on exercise, nutrition and startups. I can say that they have good advice.

Making changes in your life can be difficult. One can also talk at length about the mental state of someone that is only looking for magic pills and how to break out of it.

vishaldpatel··on Ask HN: side projects on resume?
I know that most people who you want to work for - the people that care for you as a professional will check out your website if you have one.

I say throw it all on a website with thumbnails, links and descriptions to each of your projects.

In your resume, put it in as an entry under 'experience'. If you want, make it your top entry - call it 'ongoing projects' if they're ongoing. A short description with what the projects are and the tech used, along with a link to the site.

Also, under your email address in the contact info on your resume, link to your website.

This should pretty much cover your bases.

I hope that helps.

vishaldpatel··on Sexism red/yellow cards at Defcon
Nitpicking is when someone loses sight of the big picture when they perceive imperfections in a part of it. You're definitely nitpicking.
vishaldpatel··on Sexism red/yellow cards at Defcon
You're nitpicking. My stance is that they're both fears and they'll both result in more fear, which is counterproductive to a society that is trying to reduce sexism.
vishaldpatel··on Sexism red/yellow cards at Defcon
The way to reduce this type of sexism and increase understanding is through more interaction, and not less.

Yellow and red cards may achieve segregation, but they'll also introduce fear into the mix. A man who receives one of these cards, for whatever reason, will think twice before he talks to a girl at a conference again, just as a girl who has been grabbed once at Defcon thinks twice before ever going to Defcon again.

People deal with fear and stress in funny ways. Adding one more layer of fear in a society that is already a little too afraid of the opposite sex will only backfire more in some other way.

Men who grab women do so because they're afraid to talk to them. Similarly, every time a guy says "hello" to an overly paranoid girl, she'll think that he wants to get in her pants.

vishaldpatel··on The Curse of Bullshit
"I'm fine" is a conversation killer. Granted, that people often start a conversation with the expectation to be heard, "I'm fine" still puts the burden back on them far too soon and far too abruptly. An awkward silence usually follows as it leaves the questioner with the decision to either continue the conversation, or ask another question in hopes of greasing things along.
