viseztrance··on “The Big Bang Theory” Normalized Nerd Culture
As a geek I honestly hated TBBT. I would love to see a show that portrays smart people having street smarts without going the mary sue trope.
viseztrance··on Japanese railway company starts testing 249mph bullet train speeds
The title is misleading. These trains will have an actual operating speed of 360kph (224mph). In contrast, the fastest shinkansen trains (hayabusa) currently operate at 320 kph. It's still a solid speed increase but not as ground breaking.
viseztrance··on Mozilla and Google Chrome Refuse to Support Gab’s Dissenter Extension
Not many people have an argument be it in real life or online, where one changes the other's opinion 180 degrees. But at the very least your words plant the seeds of doubt. I think it's normal that changing a point of view that you've held for many years to take time.
viseztrance··on Browser Fingerprinting: A Survey
I don't think so. A good fingerprinter will use a honeypot - an easy to detect fingerpriting script in addition to the real one.
viseztrance··on Browser Fingerprinting: A Survey
There are SaSS companies that have their entire business model around creating databases of fingerprints - for example determining bots. These scripts track you over multiple websites and are very well concealed, so you won't find them on any ad blocker blacklist.

Also, living in the EU won't protect you from getting fingerprinted.

viseztrance··on Clarifying the Future of Firefox Screenshots
It's really easy to use. Just right click somewhere on a page.
viseztrance··on Hello, GitHub
Remember, these costs add up quite easy. Why bother if I can get the same features for free?

But it really depends on how you view it. I felt I got better value by supporting an open source project I like on patreon (Godot) than spending my money on this subscription.

viseztrance··on Hello, GitHub
I'm using another service for my private repos, as github's pricing structure for a single dev is seriously uncompetitive.

I wanted to move my public / open source repos for a long time. Now I finally I have the opportunity to do so without getting into discussions at an interview on why am I not using github.

For people such as myself, I don't know what Microsoft / Github can do or say to convince otherwise.

viseztrance··on Kazakhstan is changing its alphabet from Cyrillic to Latin-based
I think the bigger benefit is that it will make English easier to learn by the local populace.
viseztrance··on Planet Shadertoy
Have you tried firefox? I get between 25-50 fps on it and just 1 fps on Chrome on my fedora laptop.
viseztrance··on X-Men: The Animated Series – Unlikely Story of the '90s Cartoon Hit
>> There was incredible pressure to change it around and make it younger, sillier, or give them a pet dog. To dumb it down or make it younger. Luckily, everybody on the creative side banded together and had, "No, you'll have to fire me" moments.

Now more than ever, I wish more shows were like this.

viseztrance··on Godot Engine – Free and open-source 2D and 3D game engine
He was referring to one of the showcased games on their website.
viseztrance··on Godot Engine – Free and open-source 2D and 3D game engine
Not the one who downvoted you, but if you understand what's written there have you considered letting them know? (email, github or maybe twitter)
viseztrance··on Godot Engine – Free and open-source 2D and 3D game engine
Actually Godot supports C++ alongside gdscript. You don't need to wait for version 3 for it.
viseztrance··on Firefox Multi-Account Containers
That attribute is part of ongoing work and it's disabled for a reason. Currently it doesn't protect you against canvas or webgl fingerprinting.
viseztrance··on YouTube TV
Any thoughts on why they've chosen tv.youtube.com over youtube.tv?

(youtube.tv redirects to .com)

viseztrance··on Id Software Programming Principles
He addresses this during QA (@28:00).
viseztrance··on How Japan has almost eradicated gun crime
I live in Romania, which according to this list[1] is number 4 of gun related deaths per capita (Japan is number 2).

The long lasting communist regime ensured very few people had access to guns. Decades passed since its collapse but the strict law regulations remained in place to this day.

viseztrance··on Found in translation: More accurate, fluent sentences in Google Translate
It translated okay for me, perhaps you meant 130万?

> I wonder how it went from 103万円以下 to "under 1,300,000 yen"

There is no million in Japanese counting, but 1万(man) is 10000. I think google did this to make reading easier, as otherwise you would have to make this conversion in your head when reading.

viseztrance··on Skully has crashed and burned
While people do buy helmets over the internet, they almost always test one beforehand to see if it fits them properly. More so on a 1500 USD purchase. Did Skully even had a single international order?
viseztrance··on My time with Rails is up
On the other hand conventions are great when reading a foreign code base.
viseztrance··on I switched to Android after 7 years of iOS
Meanwhile, on the desktop google music doesn't work without flash installed, and there's no desktop client in sight. Great times.
viseztrance··on Taiwanese startup Gogoro reveals an electric scooter designed for commuters
You can't really compare the range of a scooter / motorcycle to that of a car, be it electric or not.

Having this said, my motorcycle consumes almost as much fuel as an average car.

viseztrance··on High-DPI displays and Linux
Unfortunately, that's not the case. I have tried it and the usable screen real state is so small, that gnome is unusable. I like big fonts, and found that a scaling of 1.5 is about right.
viseztrance··on High-DPI displays and Linux
My 11 inch asus laptop has a full hd display. So it's somewhere in the middle.

Gnome's hidpi support doesn't allow float values, making this a serious issue to me. On top of that, you'll have to change the cursor size manually by diving into the config.

The iphone 6+ display uses downsampling, so perhaps that's the way to go. But as things stand, I don't see my self using an external monitor in the near future, even after wayland becomes mainstream.

viseztrance··on How a lawyer, mechanic, and engineer blew open an auto scandal
I've read the article and this blew my mind:

"[...] if you took all of the cars that GM has recalled this year and lined them up bumper to bumper, you’d end up with a line that would wrap around the earth four times."

That's 30 million cars.

viseztrance··on The Joy of Typing
Unless you're a professional typist, 40 wpm as an average speed is definitely OK. Realistically there are few people that average over 120 wpm (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Words_per_minute). As far as schools go, I hope they stick to using pens, as I don't know anyone who got RSI after using one.
viseztrance··on OpenXcom 1.0
That can't be right. I fondly remember playing it on impossible, and almost all of the aliens started with heavy plasmas, and aside from that even the smaller ufos had twice the number of regular units.
viseztrance··on Opal: Ruby to JavaScript Compiler
I never got to using opal, but I was quite intrigued after watching this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GH9FAfKG-qY
viseztrance··on Mozilla breaks our hearts, adds DRM to Firefox
It's funny how their newly appointed CEO resigned over a donation made years ago, yet the community backlash for supporting DRM has been underwhelming. Flash is dead. Now meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.
