viseztrance··on Europe's Vaccine Disaster
And the US also has a way lower population density.
viseztrance··on Can you make a basic web app without Googling? I can’t
I get where you're going with this, and I agree with the general point.

But my emacs with ctags only does local method lookups, so that's not really my case.

viseztrance··on Can you make a basic web app without Googling? I can’t
A basic app? I've been doing this for years and of course I can.

For the things I've mastered I hardly use google anymore, and even that is mostly to check if things have changed since the last time I used them and if there's a new way I didn't know about.

viseztrance··on Firefox 85 cracks down on supercookies
The way they phrased it, in the post implies otherwise?

> These impacts are similar to those reported by the Chrome team for similar cache protections they are planning to roll out.

viseztrance··on 100 years later, the dystopian origin of the word ‘robot’ still rings true
The word also exists in Romanian. It's name of the work serfs had make for their lord, more specifically "hard, uninterupted, mandatory work".

Unlike other parts, serfs in Eastern Europe were pretty much slaves.

viseztrance··on You might not need jQuery (2014)
Lines of code is a bad metric for complexity.

Jquery is a thin wrapper over javascript, whereas React has a comparable size but is a significantly higher level abstraction.

viseztrance··on Somerset cattle grid mistaken for wall by car sensors
Though I think the fault lies with the car manufacturers, I wish they would find an alternative for these cattle grids because they can be quite hazardous for motorcycles in the wet.
viseztrance··on GNOME has no thumbnails in the file picker and my toilets are blocked
The resolution was correct, but the scaling options were hidden.
viseztrance··on GNOME has no thumbnails in the file picker and my toilets are blocked
Funny thing. The company I worked for, bought me a 1440p ultrawide screen to use on my mac at (the same I used home on my linux workstation). It displayed no scaling options whatsoever - NONE. Other displays (4k 16:9) shown it but not that. And unlike linux, or windows you can't even set the font size globally.

Suffice to say, that this isn't a solved problem everywhere else.

viseztrance··on GitHub blocks entire company because one employee was in Iran
Do they keep an up to date database on who's dating whom?
viseztrance··on YouTube removed a Cybersecurity channel without much reason
Where will they draw the line? What about channels focused on the physical security like Lock Picking Lawyer?
viseztrance··on Building My Own Chess Engine
>> There are more possible chess games than the number of atoms in the universe.

>> This program throws a RecursionError and prints 59691 — the number of different positions the search tree contained when it crashed. All we need to fix this, is another universe to run the program in.

To be fair, the recursion limit is not the same thing as running out of memory. You can use a loop to have your program run further than this.

viseztrance··on Anti-fingerprinting extensions tend to make fingerprinting easier
I did not knew this! But on the other hand, I've seen "performance.now" in the wild being used to track people.
viseztrance··on Anti-fingerprinting extensions tend to make fingerprinting easier
I agree but only partially, because this needs to be enabled by default to get the most out of it.

The issue is that few people use firefox, and even fewer have this flag enabled, and as such it makes you stand out.

viseztrance··on Cover Your Tracks
That's correct, it's not that reliable, which is why these are paired with drawing some geometric shapes on the canvas as well.
viseztrance··on Cover Your Tracks
The problem is that the same font is rendered differently by different video cards, hence why your hardware can get fingerprinted.
viseztrance··on Valve Is Working on Another Extension to Help in Direct3D-over-Vulkan
Despite all the comments here stating the opposite, steam has been a home run for me on linux. It worked flawlessly on all my machines and it continues to do so.
viseztrance··on KDE Plasma 5.20
Honestly KDE has always been this way, adding features over polish. For example I used gnome shell and mac os back to back and gnome holds up very well against mac os, and if anything it feels like a more cohesive experience (consistent hotkeys, ui).
viseztrance··on Flatpak: A security nightmare – two years later
To be fair - if you make a website named flatkill you're signalling you don't want a dialog with the developers, and just expect them to throw in the towel and call it quits.

Later edit - just to be clear, it's the kill part that I have a problem with. For example, name it flatrepair and developers will likely see your statements as something constructive.

viseztrance··on Epic’s decision to bypass Apple’s App Store policies was dishonest, says judge
These hypothetical losses are easily offset by the apple tax.
viseztrance··on AppStore Reviews Should Be Stricter
Let's not compare the adults with children, because the author literally gave his ipad to his one year old as per his own words.
viseztrance··on Use long flags when scripting (2013)
If you have a very long command you can run ctrl x e (hold control press x, than e) and edit it in your $EDITOR.
viseztrance··on Linux touchpad: preliminary project funding, survey results
Well, I'm using tap to click which is what I prefer.

On the macbook pro I'm using clicks because tapping doesn't work as well as reliably, for example tap and drag.

Later edit - I tried comparing the clickable area, and indeed, the upper region is not clickable on my razer (TIL). I realized this only just now, because this not how I usually use touchpads.

viseztrance··on Linux touchpad: preliminary project funding, survey results
I can hardly tell the difference between my razer stealth linux touchpad and my workprovided macbook.

Even based on the feedback, it seems that most people are okay with their touchpad experience and are more interested in advanced features like multitouch.

Having this said, for myself this is a tough sell. I'm concerned that I would donate and I won't be able to tell the difference between this and some placebo drivers.

viseztrance··on Open UI
This. I almost always click on them twice to see the other state, so I can be sure it's on the correct setting.
viseztrance··on I Learned French in 12 Months
Not everyone speaks English, far from it, but I totally understand the sentiment. In any case, even if you're visiting a place and you're awful at a language, it still means a LOT to the native speakers.
viseztrance··on Estonia has a new way to stop speeding motorists
I've taken the course. I mentioned it to my insurer, and they didn't care.
viseztrance··on YouTube is taking down educational hacking videos
I can see that happening. And then what next? Rossmann mac repair?
viseztrance··on It's all Greek to me: Thoughts on code readability and aesthetics
I worked in a place where my team lead wanted us to vote on a technical decision. I found that unfair because half of the team was at a junior level.
viseztrance··on I didn't get paid, so I open-sourced my client’s project
Most of us are developers and can easily empathize with the OP, but any prospective employer seeing this will wonder about the other half of the story.
