virtuallynathan··on Apple unveils new Mac Studio and brings Apple Silicon to Mac Pro
It has 8 x DDR4 3200, so about 204GB/s of memory bandwidth, 1/4th of the M2 Ultra.
virtuallynathan··on Nvidia DGX GH200: 100 Terabyte GPU Memory System
FWIW, I believe it’s 900GB/s full duplex, so 450GB/s each way. Still a ton!
virtuallynathan··on Nvidia DGX GH200: 100 Terabyte GPU Memory System
I would guess about $100m and ~1.5-2MW
virtuallynathan··on ChatGPT cannot build a simple working site from scratch
3.5? 4? Is your prompt detailed enough?
virtuallynathan··on Live Starlink Satellite and Coverage Map
This maps coverage is not accurate.
virtuallynathan··on Live Starlink Satellite and Coverage Map
It's only launched in a few African countries, see starlink.com/map
virtuallynathan··on Live Starlink Satellite and Coverage Map
I really like Mike's version. If anyone has perf tips, I'm happy to pass them on. It's a little out dated, we have a big update coming in the near future to add support for E-Band simulation, etc.
virtuallynathan··on Nvidia Announces H100 NVL – Max Memory Server Card for Large Language Models
Grace can be paired with Hopper via a 900GB/s NVLINK bus (500GB/s memory bandwidth), 1TB of LPDDR5 on the CPU and 80-94GB of HBM3 on the GPU.

virtuallynathan··on “Healthy obesity” doesn’t exist. It is unequivocally bad for you
Waist to height ratio is probably a better measure, nearly as easy.
virtuallynathan··on Starlink V2 Mini Satellites with 4x the bandwidth, E-Band, and Argon thrusters
They published a whole document on it, V2 sats are designed to be less reflective than v1.x
virtuallynathan··on Apple orders entire supply of TSMC's 3nm chips for iPhone 15 Pro and M3 Macs
Might take about 10 minutes to migrate your mouse from one corner to the other!
virtuallynathan··on Vinyl Chloride and the Ohio Train Derailment
How else would it be transported? Rail seems like a safe/efficient way of doing so.
virtuallynathan··on Some data centers are noisy neighbors
Wouldn’t you then just put more servers in and use the same 32MW footprint?

virtuallynathan··on Citizen scientists report global rapid reductions in the visibility of stars
I bought a house out in the middle of nowhere in part for the dark sky. It's awesome to walk outside and see so much. Per this data, my house is at 19.9 μcd/m2, and if I drive/hike a few miles down the road, I can get to < 10 μcd/m2.
virtuallynathan··on Death by vegetable oil: What the studies say (2020)
Semantics, I guess -- If you pick one at random, you've got a 15-25% chance of it being pure avocado/olive oil. Sure, you can get real stuff if you know what you are looking for.
virtuallynathan··on Epochalypse
Heh, I bought y2038.io and epochalypse.tech for my retirement gig.
virtuallynathan··on Death by vegetable oil: What the studies say (2020)
Be aware that almost all US Olive/Avocado Oil is adulterated with other seed oils. Estimates are 75%+
virtuallynathan··on Death by vegetable oil: What the studies say (2020)
Salad dressing, it's like 50% soybean oil.
virtuallynathan··on Ask HN: Who else is working/on call over Christmas?
I'm on call for the Netflix CDN, but luckily no one touches anything, so the number of incidents is super low.
virtuallynathan··on FCC partially grants SpaceX Gen2 broadband satellite application
FWIW, this whole thing is a bit confusing -- there's the Gen2 constellation and the V2.0 satellite. The V2.0 satellite is huge, ~6.4x2.7m with 2 solar arrays totaling 257m^2. Elon has said it will deliver close to an order of magnitude more capacity.
virtuallynathan··on Starlink to start “deprioritizing” traffic after 1TB monthly
The biggest loser here seems to business users, who, for $500/mo get 1TB of data prioritized over nearly everyone, but then are capped to 1Mbps up/down until they pay $1/GB for more priority data! Even worse for maritime users, same, but $2/GB!
virtuallynathan··on FreeBSD optimizations used by Netflix to serve video at 800Gb/s [pdf]
Back of the Napkin Zen4 / Genoa gets you to ~500GB/s PCIe and ~500GB/s of DRAM bandwidth -- nearly 4Tbps! Zen3/Rome is ~300GB/s PCIe and ~300GB/s DRAM -- about 2.4Tbps. A single 2U box with Genoa might scale to 1.25Tbps+ of useful Netflix traffic. We'll have to see what magic Drew can pull :)
virtuallynathan··on FreeBSD optimizations used by Netflix to serve video at 800Gb/s [pdf]
It works with such high efficiency because we know how to place content in advance, and the catalog is relatively small. Trying to serve 800Gbps of YouTube content would be a nightmare.
virtuallynathan··on Facebook (Meta) international cable expansion: animated map
Yea, this is a terrible way of calculating this. I would like to see it done based on capacity (which sadly isn't public for part-ownership).
virtuallynathan··on Facebook (Meta) international cable expansion: animated map
They are already selling "middle-mile" fiber in the US...

virtuallynathan··on Facebook (Meta) international cable expansion: animated map
And Google will own... more than that. Google will have 19+ owned/part-owned cables, Meta has 14.
virtuallynathan··on Falcon Heavy Launch [video]
There were no missions... there are now 4 or 5 more on the manifest for the next 12 months.
