vincvinc··on Twitter CEO fires two top executives, freezes hiring
Hmm, are we on the same HN? I feel like I see a lot of topics debated I’d call political (“about how society ought to function”) on a daily basis.

vincvinc··on What I learned running a SaaS for a year
> half of my time went to actually solving the problem I wanted to solve (knowing if a site is down, and alerting folks when that happens). The other half went to building a SaaS platform around that problem.

You’d think in today’s software landscape there would be tools to simplify or automate the part or building a SaaS business that everyone needs to do.

He mentions Stripe for payments of course, but isn’t there anything broader to get set up more quickly? Like a shopify for SaaS businesses?

FYI former YC partner Eric started Beeper, a chat app to get the unified inbox back. Built on the federated Matrix network, with 'bridges' to all popular chat networks.

vincvinc··on Language learning with Netflix
That's interesting. I have been using this plugin for years, but only for passive learning - just to watch things on Netflix with dual subtitles (and to unlock subs in more languages than the Netflix UI would allow). Will take another look at the other functionalities.

vincvinc··on The persecution of the Uyghurs is a crime against humanity
I agree. On the other hand, how to put pressure (by, for example boycotting the upcoming Beijing Winter Olympics) without providing propaganda-fuel for the CCP to drive one more wedge between Chinese people and the rest of the world?
vincvinc··on The TikTok War
Hey, I see you've struck a nerve with some people - even talking about the idea of an independent Hong Kong will send your comment to the absolute bottom.

vincvinc··on China has passed a national security law for Hong Kong
I see my post going up and down, it's a true roller coaster, haha.
vincvinc··on China has passed a national security law for Hong Kong
I know this is not on many people's radar right now, but I strongly believe the rise of Xi's authoritarian nationalism is the biggest story of this century (after global warming).

And this is our generation's "Berlin wall moment". By itself, you might look at this law (after it's published) and not see anything bad. But in the greater context of Chinese policy choices of the last few years, this is nothing less than the signal to end democratic open society in another part of the world.

This is not just about Hong Kong. It's about a small group of powerful people thinking they can create a new order where they can do whatever they want to their own people, their neighbors and the world. They take full advantage of the naivety and openness of our global open system while openly threatening anyone who dares speak out, be it individual Canadians or Australians, the Indian state, a twitch Streamer or a Hong Kong comedian.

So, Is there anything we can do?

some ideas...

- call to boycott the Beijing 2022 Winter olympics

- share the story of the Uyghurs. Today's news include proof that Uyghur women are being sterilized en masse: https://apnews.com/269b3de1af34e17c1941a514f78d764c

- if a company does not list Taiwan as an independent country, they are in effect performing appeasement politics. Increase the cost of doing business with dictators by loudly calling out these companies. Don't be shy, they are getting much more pressure from the Chinese side. It is time to pick a side.

- more importantly, do NOT tolerate any discrimination towards Chinese. It's immoral and increases support for the regime: https://twitter.com/jenjpan/status/1277664711325048832?s=21

... at least, that's what I can come up with in 10 minutes. I'm sure there's much. We need to move the Overton window on this people, the longer we let this go on, the bigger the consequences will be.

vincvinc··on 'We've bought the wrong satellites': UK tech gamble baffles experts
Curious if the FT fails to mention this one very important fact that the Guardian mentions, or if you left it out:

> OneWeb filed for bankruptcy in March in the US, where most of its operations are located, after failing to secure new funding.

vincvinc··on Twilio’s Dutch rival MessageBird plans an IPO
At first I was rolling my eyes at your comment, but then I realized that I believe there generally should be more pushback from consumers in open societies against these kind of lies that companies are forced to repeat.

Let's make it more expensive for companies to give dictators what they want.

> There was an experiment back in 1890 where someone wore glasses made with mirrors in them to flip their vision. After about 8 days, they could see just fine with them on.

Schience youtuber Kurtis Baute did this as well: his video "I Spent 7 Days Upside-Down" documents it... a very fun watch!

vincvinc··on Zettelkasten note-taking in 10 minutes
I put my markdown files in a Dropbox folder, so I can use apps like 1writer on iOS. Syncs well and works like a charm!

Whenever I have an interesting thought, I get my phone, open 1writer, it creates a new [timestamp].md file, and I just jot it down. It instantly saves to dropbox so if I open Sublime on my laptop, the file's already there.

On my PC, I mostly write in Sublime Text but now experimenting with Zettlr and Obsidian.

I heard heard other combinations with other cloud file services and other markdown writing apps work just as good.

Having a folder with plaintext notes going back years just feels ... future-proof.

vincvinc··on How Roam Research analyzes product design and team building
1) How come this one app in particular seems to permeate all the media I consume (even though there is no way to try the app out right now)? In the same week, several podcasts and friends recommended it to me, and now HN. Kudos to whoever organized this launch.

2) I decided this year my personal notes are too long-term and important to me to keep entrusting to every new cloud startup that pops up.

Right now my notes are mostly in markdown files, synced by Dropbox. More developed thoughts that need to link to each-other I do in Trello (I like their UX and how it helps me think).

I'm looking for a system that has these features, but:

- where I will always be in control of the data (open source?)

- syncs & backups reliably

- seamless on mobile

vincvinc··on Wekan: Open-source, trello-like kanban
I do most of my thinking and planning on Trello boards. It almost feels like a part of my brain.

Ever since Trello was acquired by Atlassian, I've been planning to replace it - in the long term - waiting for signals that Atlassian is degrading my experience. It hasn't happened yet but I am assume that it's a matter of time.

I've been wanting an open source Trello clone with a native desktop client for a while now. Going to give this a try.

First impression: promising but seems a bit clunky/ugly compared to Trello. Hope I can contribute to the development in some way.

vincvinc··on China Bans Americans Working for WSJ, NYT, WaPo
This is a big hit for journalism about China. A lot of very good quality reporting on (among others) Xinjiang came from these people. We will all be much less informed about China in the future.

The subtle shift in confidence that this action implies is that China is confident in itself after "beating" the virus while the west is struggling.

A "media war" between China and the US might be worse than a trade war. While a trade war is just about numbers, this will be about ideology and there will be no middle ground.

vincvinc··on Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on?
Good idea! I've worked before on trying to come up with a good intermediate representation for these kind of purposes... Linguistic theories are only partially helpful here. Want to have a chat? I really think there is a future in this approach.
vincvinc··on List of Twitter mute words for your timeline
I was totally expecting this to be a "antidote for the upcoming US elections that I want nothing to do with" list, like I have:

  elections
  trump
  warren
  clinton
  republican
  democrat
  bernie
  biden
  gender
  male
  female
  privilege
  race
  racism
  racist
  white house
  outrage
  cancelled

... greatly recommended as a way to get back some control over which information you prioritize.
vincvinc··on Huginn: Create agents that monitor and act on your behalf
Little known fact: this project is used widely by journalists who can't code (at The New York Times, among others) to do a variety of tasks, like eg. monitoring web pages like Trump's policy position, scraping press releases or filtering out very specific news alerts.

see Huginn for Newsrooms: http://albertsun.github.io/huginn-newsroom-scenarios/

It's been at least as useful as Yahoo! Pipes, and endlessly more reliable. Thanks a lot!

vincvinc··on Chinese farmer 'studies law for 16 years' to defeat dumping of hazardous waste
Why was this comment was marked dead? I am "vouch"ing it for now because I have read Wang Enlin's story a long time ago, and though a cool story, I have doubts about this version of the story by the Independent to be a good representation.
vincvinc··on Ask HN: What are some of your recent failures?
