vincie··on The NSA Is Breaking Most Encryption on the Internet
The latest SHA3 was determined in a competition amongst private sector contestants, won by Keccak. Schneier himself put up a candidate - Skein.

Edit: Then there's TrustedBSD (as opposed to SELinux)

vincie··on The NSA Is Breaking Most Encryption on the Internet
Why not leave it to the private sector?
vincie··on The NSA Is Breaking Most Encryption on the Internet
When I looked more into the SHAs and SELinux a while ago, I had always wondered why the NSA would create/sponsor these things.
vincie··on Ask HN: How to keep focused and working
Try doing a little bit at a time where you get some result. Try your hardest not to stop before finishing the bit and getting a result. If you cannot do so, make the bit smaller and try again. You work out what the "bit" is.
vincie··on Ask HN: What would you do?
I'm a bit like you (but older - 44 yrs, divorced). I am trying to "build something". I use the spare time I have to practise and practise and practise. And then practise some more.

Edit: After reading a few comments from people feeling sorry for you, I'm afraid I might have missed your call for personal emotional support. Sorry about that. But if you were not after sympathy, then my original post stands. Practise to improve your skills (doesn't have to be programming). Do lots of practise while you have so much free time. When family and friends (and pets) come around, you will wish you were family-less, friendless and pet-less. And don't feel sorry for yourself.

vincie··on Bottle light inventor proud to be poor
I thought of this general idea many years ago, but then decided it might be better to cut up the bottles, flatten the plastic and sew the flat pieces together to make panels to use in roofs and windows. Never got around to actually doing anything about it though.
vincie··on A Tmux Crash Course (2011)
Do you show how to make it (or the terminal?) less ugly, without resorting to stuff like byobu?
vincie··on David Cameron cracks down on online pornography
Should crack down on Facebook instead. Here in Australia at least, I have read of more people being murdered by someone they met via Facebook that through a pornography site.
vincie··on Hikikomori: Why are so many Japanese men refusing to leave their rooms?
From the BBC article: "For a time one company operating in Nagoya could be hired by parents to burst into their children's rooms, give them a big dressing down, and forcibly drag them away to a dormitory to learn the error of their ways."

I was just thinking of starting up something like this in Australia, but just realised the bikies (e.g., Hell's Angels, Nomad, Rebels etc) already do something very similar.

vincie··on How to rise early and why successful people do it
I don't draw the curtains so the morning light wakes me up. Unfortunately I live in a place that does not have daylight savings (Queensland, Australia), so the times differ. But I can work around that.
vincie··on One cost engineers and product managers don't consider
I actually see these as an opportunity to improve existing code, plus doing something new and different. However, to cover myself, I ask for thorough specifications and test-cases, to which I add risk analysis etc. If it doesn't go exactly right, I blame the specifications.
vincie··on Critical PRNG Bug in NetBSD Kernel
Does vim have a plugin to detect unbalanced parens/brackets/braces etc?
vincie··on Confessions of A Job Destroyer
I'm in the midst of destroying the jobs of 1, maybe 2 workers right now. I am replacing a poor quality document generating system based on MS RTF templates with wrappers that build tex files and then calling pdflatex on them.
vincie··on ISPs Now Monitoring for Copyright Infringement
We have open source software. Why not open source content? I do not have the chops to do it, but I would like to see software/start-ups that helps me, you and everyone else create content - muzak, movies, games, etc - free for anyone to download, sample, modify, sell, give away, with open source styled licenses - just like open source software. Like the linux ecosystem. Surely this is possible? We the consumers of content, should create the content. I am tired of being treated like a thief, although I have never stolen anything.
vincie··on The Lesson of Iraq (1958)
Something else I do not understand: Why does the violent antagonism between Shia and Sunni branches still exist and so widespread? I am aware of the antagonism between Protestants and Catholics in Northern Ireland, but that seems to be also based on ethnic lines (native Irish versus English immigrant stock) and everyone else in the Western World has moved on.
vincie··on The Lesson of Iraq (1958)
Frivolous, theoretical question: What would happen to the Middle East situation if, say, the Western World suddenly switched to alternatives to oil, en masse? Electric vehicles, nuclear power generation, bicycles - whatever. Is there more to it than just oil?
vincie··on The Importance of Excel
Entirely word of mouth.
vincie··on The Importance of Excel
I build custom apps based heavily on what is described here - http://onsmalltalk.com/sandstonedb-simple-activerecord-style... (more towards the bottom).
vincie··on The Web Is Becoming Smalltalk
Check out Seaside, the Smalltalk web framework. It has a edit-in-the-browser mode, where you can pretty much edit anything to make your web app work. Seaside itself is a component-centric framework, not page-centric as most web frameworks are. You build independent components, which you place here and there to make your app.
vincie··on The Web Is Becoming Smalltalk
Test your code in a Workspace before editing your classes. Depends on the complexity of the change you are making of course. If it is complex, clone the image and test on the clone.
vincie··on The Importance of Excel
I make a good living replacing Excel for small businesses.
