viktorcode··on My next Mac might be the last
There are free apps too.
viktorcode··on macOS Ventura is now available
Just start typing the name. Not in the search field of Finder. You'll get focus on a file or folder that starts with whatever symbols you just typed. Very convenient and fast. Having "sort by name" by default in every folder helps a lot too.
viktorcode··on Apple’s iPhone 14 Redesign for Repair
As a customer you don't need "Apple's consent". Just drop the phone to a repair shop of your choosing. As a repair servicemen, you need Apple's consent presumably because they don't want you buying stolen iPhones for parts.
viktorcode··on SIM swapper abducted, beaten, held for ransom
Just wanted to remind everyone that insisting on using SMS for 2FA and for notifications instead of push notifications is a deliberate inaction on the part of service providers that creates vulnerabilities and whole sprawling crime underworld.
viktorcode··on uBlock Origin Lite: Description
I believe there's none.
viktorcode··on uBlock Origin Lite: Description
MV3 version should be directly portable.
viktorcode··on Apple’s iPhone 14 Redesign for Repair
> interchanging parts on two brand new iphone's and it disabled a lot of things including auto-brightness.

I think one problem is not being discussed enough is iPhones being stolen for parts (since in most cases they can't be reactivated). I strongly suspect inability to simply switch parts without remote authorisation is Apple's way to address the problem.

viktorcode··on Note-taking isn't rocket science
Let me mirror that with a sarcasm:

Code typing is a practice of typing code, really. Why some people building their code editors like NASA engineers building the next rocket to send us to the next habitable Earth?

You don't need to meticulously craft your code editor, stop overthinking.

viktorcode··on Cancer breakthrough is a ‘wake-up’ call on danger of air pollution
They do clean harmful particles from the air, thus providing benefit. Just turn it on after you closed the window.
viktorcode··on Cancer breakthrough is a ‘wake-up’ call on danger of air pollution
> “The risk of lung cancer from air pollution is lower than from smoking, but we have no control over what we all breathe,”

We do, to a degree. If you have air purifiers at home that does help. I can’t recommend them enough.

viktorcode··on iOS 16 Available September 12th
If it will take off among carriers, then yes. As things stand now it's a technology that "sometimes work".
viktorcode··on Show HN: Quake 1 ported to the Apple Watch
An app with a dev account signature will not "delete itself in 7 days". You are talking about apps signed with a normal account.
viktorcode··on Apple AMX instruction set (M1/M2 matrix coprocessor)
Qualcomm most likely will go this route (proprietary instructions) as this now officially blessed by Arm. I'd bet we'll see that in their 2023 chips.
viktorcode··on Almost half of cancer deaths are caused by smoking, alcohol, or obesity
> Data show that smoking, drinking alcohol and obesity are the biggest contributors to cancer worldwide.

Does this mean that the predominantly muslim states have far less cancer cases?

viktorcode··on Apple can terminate developer account without a reason by mistake
It won't help. Case in point: Steam. If your indie game isn't on it you can as well not release it at all, as the money you collect will be a pittance.
viktorcode··on Apple can terminate developer account without a reason by mistake
I remember a similar story floating around few years ago. Developer went public with unfair account termination story, but then Apple went public with their side of the story: if I remember correctly the developer was using other account(s) to inflate their app rating.
viktorcode··on Moving to Estonia
But the author is moving there to open startup. It's a business opportunity, not just a place to live.
viktorcode··on Clip control on the Apple GPU
Can someone explain to me why support OpenGL at all? Vulkan is easier to implement. Is there a need for OpenGL on Linux?
viktorcode··on Apple surpassed $3.5B in annual revenue from its ad network
The text is written in such a way to make you think that indeed Apple themselves do the same tracking which they blocked for others. The opposite is true. Apple don't track users outside of their services. Apple tracking inside their apps has always been opt-in. Meta, Google, Amazon are still free to track users inside their ecosystem, but outside tracking has become opt-in.
viktorcode··on Apple surpassed $3.5B in annual revenue from its ad network
> Apple is sharing data from all their properties like apple news. This is pretty similar to google and Facebook tracking you across the web.

Google and Facebook track you across the web, as you said. The comparison to Apple's tracking, which is opt-in, would be Google and Facebook tracking you across their own services only.

viktorcode··on Apple surpassed $3.5B in annual revenue from its ad network
It doesn't track you outside of Apple apps that serve advertising. The tracking is opt-in.
viktorcode··on Apple surpassed $3.5B in annual revenue from its ad network
Correction: personalised ads are opt-in, the same as IDFA tracking.
viktorcode··on Show HN: Modifying Clang for a Safer, More Explicit C++
I'm not sure about explicit braces for cases in `switch`. I think what Swift does is pretty neat: each case breaks by default, so you don't have to write `break;`, instead you have to write `fallthrough` to explicitly allow them falling through.
viktorcode··on Physical buttons outperform touchscreens in new cars, test finds
The important part

> WHICH TESTS WERE PERFORMED? Activate the heated seat, increase temperature by two degrees, and start the defroster. Power on the radio and adjust the station to a specific channel (Sweden’s Program 1). Reset the trip computer. Lower the instrument lighting to the lowest level and turn off the center display.

viktorcode··on Curious C++ Lambda Examples: Recursion, constexpr, Containers C++23 included
There are complex languages and there are readable languages. One language can be both at the same time, like Swift.

The syntax examples here is what makes C++ hard to read: scores of special symbols hiding rather simple underlying mechanism.

viktorcode··on “It’s time for Apple to fix texting”
On iPhone you can enable one of several system-wide colour modes designed for colour-blind. Give it a try.
viktorcode··on AppLovin bids $17.5B to acquire Unity
Hard to definitely label it as a fraud, because from my experience mobile advertising SDKs tend to have a lot of bugs in their presentation layer, and not all of them may benefit ad provider.
viktorcode··on Steve Jobs negotiates Apple's deal with Microsoft (1997)
> Apple and Microsoft will announce that they have entered into cooperative development on Java, with the intention of insuring compatibility between their respective Java virtual machines and extending them in some similar directions.

Oh, yes. Java was "the future of programming" back then.

viktorcode··on The Latest Study on Red Meat and Heart Disease: A Red Herring
Still, there are meta-analysis of studies with interesting conclusions.

viktorcode··on Windows HEVC video codec from Microsoft costs $0.99
HEVC has been supported by mobile phone hardware for years now, both encoding and decoding. And the difference with AV1 is negligible.
