vikeri··on Closure Compiler in JavaScript
The advanced compilation mode does some pretty powerful dead code removal and minification [1]. I guess that is available from plugins in Babel as well but Google has been using it for Gmail, Google.com etc, so it's quite battle tested.

Great! Responses like these really make me like you guys :)
vikeri··on GitLab 8.13 Released with Multiple Issue Boards and Merge Conflict Editor
Having a lot of issues with our merge requests never merging and just spinning forever.[1] Would like Gitlab to put a little more focus on those kinds of dealbreaker issues. Would hate to give up such a great product because of things like that.

vikeri··on Show HN: Marathono – A GUI tool for managing long-running processes in macOS
Does this have to be the case? I have a couple of long running processes that I would really like to check the output of from time to time. Couldn't you have an option to just show the last line for example? Was super excited to see this as I've been bugged by exactly this but if I can't see the output it's a dealbreaker for me unfortunately
vikeri··on Why I'm Not a React Native Developer
Yes, but I was addressing the issue of writing JavaScript, not using its ecosystem. And the lack of a high quality standard library is elegantly solved in ClojureScript by using the Google Closure library.
vikeri··on Why I'm Not a React Native Developer
For all the hate of JS, I'm developing a RN app in ClojureScript, so I rarely touch JS and instead use what I percieve to be a nicer language: https://youtu.be/6IYm34nDL64
vikeri··on Why I'm Not a React Native Developer
You can build RN apps in ClojureScript and, voila: You rarely have to touch JS. Edit (it's not without its flaws though): https://youtu.be/6IYm34nDL64
vikeri··on Why Do People Who Need Help from the Government Hate It So Much?
What if it’s not payed work but meaningful activities that leads to self worth. Many activities may not be generating direct economic value but may still contribute to society. Different types of environmental or community work are examples of that category.
vikeri··on GitLab 8.10 Released with Wildcard Branch Protection and Manual Actions for CI
The manual release feature is great! I was just pondering on how to do that. For anyone wondering where to start with Gitlab CI I wrote a short post about our very simple but still very useful CI setup: https://pilloxa.gitlab.io/posts/ci-with-gitlab-and-docker/
vikeri··on Learn Difficult Concepts with the ADEPT Method
Excellent! I always think that people, like myself, that work with somewhat abstract and/or complex concepts need to improve our ability to explain them. Really happy to see a concrete method to do this.
vikeri··on Forestry.io
Great!
vikeri··on Forestry.io
Any plans on supporting Gitlab and Gitlab Pages? Would also be stoked if it was open source, I'd probably still pay for the service but just knowing that it is OSS and that I could tweak it myself would be great.
vikeri··on With React Native it’s not all sugar and spice
The performance is impacted, avoiding premature optimizations I haven't looked into that part yet though. Without any performance optimizations I'm experiencing performance better than HTML5 but not really on par with native. To me the value of sharing the logic and the crazy fast development speed is more valuable than a few milliseconds of delay. At least in this stage.
vikeri··on Serverless Architectures
I spoke to a solutions architect on AWS who said that their recommendation for building a new backend service (eg. a REST API) is to use API gateway and Lambda. I definitely got the impression that he meant full-fledged apps.
vikeri··on With React Native it’s not all sugar and spice
If you use react native on mobile and react on the web the core model and business logic can easily be shared since it is just pure js. And you can use any of the languages that transpiles to js: TypeScript, Clojurescript etc.
vikeri··on With React Native it’s not all sugar and spice
I don't mind switching between different contexts, I frequent the terminal for git an other stuff anyway. I think it is fairly magic that one may finally develop the same code for both iOS and Android. Huge productivity win, especially using Clojurescript!

I agree with the instability though, nothing for someone afraid of rumbling around in the RN source code to solve things like this https://github.com/facebook/react-native/issues/7720

vikeri··on Infinit announces Project Dropboxe
Alright, good to hear that it is within reach. In our startup what we want that we can't get from Dropbox/Google is privacy. I've been looking at owncloud which would give us privacy but redundancy seems complicated and therefore my excitement about you guys. The possibility to start out super cheap with two RasPi3 and external drives and in the future migrate to more scalable solutions like S3 would make this product pretty awesome for everyone from home tinkerers to enterprises.
vikeri··on Infinit announces Project Dropboxe
Exactly what I've been looking for! Does anyone know if I could run this on a couple of Rasberry Pi 3?

vikeri··on Chirimen, a Firefox OS-Powered IoT Single-Board Computer Developed by Mozilla
I agree, one issue with js on embedded is that while it is fun and easy to prototype compared to C, if it is intended to be mass produced the variable cost for each unit will be a lot higher due to js needing more powerful->more expensive microcontrollers. If you would substitute C for something in embedded I personally would go for Elixir/Erlang or something that would actually provide some great advantages over C in terms of abstractions and VM:s.

vikeri··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (January 2016)
Pilloxa | Stockholm, Sweden | ONSITE

Pilloxa is an eHealth IoT startup looking for app/backend devs. We are in an early stage so a great opportunity to have a major impact on building the company and changing the eHealth industry.

Clojure(Script) (generally focusing on functional languages), React and possibly React Native for iOS/Android.

Help us save lives!

vikeri··on Elixir v1.1.0 Released
I do not agree, I have worked for a year on a startup using Clojure(Script) and I hadn't touched Clojure before. Never looked back and did not encounter any major issues springing from the choice of language. To the contrary, I have really enjoyed not having to deal with the disadvatages of older languages. The issue could possibly be in hiring, if the supply of Elixir-developers would be scarce.
