victorp13··on Clawdbot Bought Me a Car
All is fair in love and dealing with car dealers.
victorp13··on I used to know how to write in Japanese
Small nuance, but the term ワープロ馬鹿 actually is unrelated to software like MS Word, and refers to the at one point ubiquitous ワープロ (Word Pro) dedicated hardware device that many Japanese people owned in the 80s/90s to write letters. Read more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Word_processor#Japanese_word_p...

Interestingly the English Wikipedia page above only mentions Japanese word processor devices in a small section, but the Japanese version of that page is almost entirely dedicated to these hardware devices: https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E3%83%AF%E3%83%BC%E3%83%89%E3...

I was lucky enough to live with a Japanese family in the early 90s and used one to learn how to type Japanese but also write letters home in my own language. I guess you had to live through this age to understand the difference of how Word Pro is used and the hardware association it has in Japanese.

victorp13··on Burrito Now, Pay Later
Also Google the "Sin of riba". Islam was really on to something if you ask me (disclaimer: not a religious person).
victorp13··on In S3 simplicity is table stakes
> Last thing I'll say is, you know your API is good when "S3 compatable API" is a selling point of your competitors.

Counter-point: You know that you're the dominant player. See: .psd, .pdf, .xslx. Not particularly good file types, yet widely supported by competitor products.

victorp13··on MLow: Meta's low bitrate audio codec
Does anyone happen to know if ChatGPT's voice feature uses audio compression similar to Opus? Especially the "heavy 30 percent receiver-side packet loss" example sounds a LOT like the experience I have sometimes.
victorp13··on Nomnoml
You can export to PNG and other formats in the Mermaid editor https://mermaid.live/
victorp13··on Airlines are a lot like central banks (2020)
Was going to post the exact same here. Economics major. Making this comparison shows lack of insight into what a central bank actually does, or the power it yields.
victorp13··on Joplin – An open-source note taking and to-do application with synchronisation
Tried both for quite some time, Obsidian has better community plugin support, better sync (paid) and stores plain text files instead of using a DB. Most importantly the mobile app (at least for iOS) of Obsidian is 1:1 with the desktop app.

Switched from Joplin to Obsidian and haven't looked back. Both apps are great initiatives though!

victorp13··on Emoji Kitchen
No eggplant, and no peach. What happened to the internet?
victorp13··on Into Thin AirPods
Bit harsh, could have worded that less blunt than "pathetic".
victorp13··on AI chatbots are having their “tulip mania” moment

victorp13··on Replacing my MacBook Air M1 with a ThinkPad T480
Did you... just quote my favourite car of all times, the GT-Four?!
victorp13··on Is the Living Computer Museum dead?
Narita (New Tokyo Airport) is exactly the same distance away, in the exact opposite direction.
victorp13··on Show HN: I built a site that finds the cheapest place to buy a book
Could you put the name of the shop on each search result? That way people can better pick their shop of choice (and avoid the ones they do not want to buy from).
victorp13··on Everything is an input device (fun with barcodes) [video]
Note how these folks are moving to the next slide using a barcode scanner. Like an absolute boss!
victorp13··on AI Wrote and Performed a Jerry Seinfeld Routine [video]
I didn't laugh in exactly the same way I didn't laugh at actual Seinfeld jokes. In that sense, it was absolutely uncanny.
victorp13··on Mercedes to accept legal responsibility for a vehicle when Drive Pilot is active
Self-driving cars will be popularized by people not having to pay (increasingly expensive) accident insurance. Once human driving becomes prohibitively expensive, it'll be reserved for the 'elite' who get a kick out of driving a car themselves.
victorp13··on America has a drinking problem
I'm curious as to what the movie/tv industry's role is in this increase in solitary drinking. I was an active 'solo' drinker as well, who recently stopped altogether. Since I stopped I've noticed something peculiar that I wonder if other people noticed as well: A lot of TV shows and movies contain scenes where alcohol is being positioned as a "fix" for something.

- Just had a tough situation? Have a drink!

- Feeling anxious? A drink takes the edge off!

- Feeling awkward at a social event? Drink!

Now, I have people working in the alcohol industry who insist that there is no direct product placement or company sponsoring going on. This seems believable, because oftentimes there are no specific brands mentioned in these scenes.

However, this did get me thinking: Is there any alcohol lobby that influences writers to include these types of "benefits of alcohol" scenes into their scripts? When you start to recognise them, you'll notice that a lof of these scenes are entirely unnecessary, to the point where you have to think that a script writer had to deliberately add the alcohol into the scene!

victorp13··on You might as well timestamp it
As the storage cost is very low, why not use both? Not trying to be obtuse, but I genuinely typically have separate columns in my schema design for booleans and the timestamps of these events flipping from false to true (published, edited). Come to think of it: These events warrant saving them to a separate table altogether; booleans represent a current state - there may be 1:n events like multiple edits.
victorp13··on WallStreetBets members adopt 3,500 gorillas in six days
Generic question: I see a lot of news articles stating that WSB has "10 million members". Does being a 'member' go beyond clicking the 'join' button on that subreddit? If so it's more like a 'follow this channel', isn't it?
victorp13··on Skyline – Your GitHub story in 3D

victorp13··on .NET Core gRPC
I sometimes have thoughts like these. Mostly, before coffee in the morning.

I never actually feel the need though to actually go ahead and post them. Kindly reflect on what you did, and where this is coming from.

victorp13··on Driving on the Autobahn
This is not at all "the accepted way" in Germany.
victorp13··on N-Wheeled Cars
EE? Electrical Engineer?
victorp13··on The Nuclear Option
Don't just count deaths: Nuclear fallout has profound long-term negative effects that coal accidents do not. At Fukushima, nearly 80.000 people are still displaced, almost eight years later. Source: http://www.reconstruction.go.jp/english/
victorp13··on Blizzard shutting down Nostalrius, popular WoW private server
That's a fake account.
victorp13··on Trello hits 12M users, launches Power-Ups platform
Such an edge case. Typical example of user feedback that leads to software bloat.

There are a great number of workarounds for your 'problem'.

victorp13··on The Disappearance of Self in Japan
The photo is in fact wrongly captioned at the source, gettyimages.

Makes it almost certain the author did not pick this caption at all.

victorp13··on Resolutions for programmers (2012)
13. Work on volunteer projects

I set this resolution for myself last year, and have been able to work on three projects via http://socialcoder.org/ - feels very fulfilling!

victorp13··on SAP to halt development of Business ByDesign
HANA Enterprise Cloud is a "managed cloud environment". In other words, IaaS or hosted applications at best; not a true SaaS play.
