viach··on Consciousness likely not unique to earthlings, paper says
When I checked the last time "consciousness" was not defined yet. So the title can be read as "Some things are likely not unique to earthlings"
viach··on Optimism associated with exceptional longevity (2019)
X -> Optimism, Optimism -> Longevity

Can't wait for a research which reveals the X.

viach··on Yet Another LLM Rant
I think people often misread AGI as Artificial God Intelligence.
viach··on The LLMentalist Effect
Yup. And the real danger of AI is not that it enslaves humans but in that it will bring great disillusionment and existential crisis.

Someone should write a blog post about this to warn humanity.

viach··on The LLMentalist Effect
> 1 The tech industry has accidentally invented the initial stages a completely new kind of mind, based on completely unknown principles...

> 2) The intelligence illusion is in the mind of the user and not in the LLM itself.

3) The intelligence of the users is illusion either?

viach··on How to Be an Engineer That PMs Don't Hate
> Be an engineer that PMs don’t hate

Easy-peasy. Always agree with their estimates, never complain, never ask for a raise, work additional hours.

viach··on OpenAI-to-SQLite
Can't wait for the battle of the OpenAI JavaScript frameworks
viach··on Ask HN: Strategies for working with engineers that are too smart?
Being smart is not the end of the game, software is created by teams. You could ask them to make reverse code review so that they can enjoy each others smarteness.
viach··on Just use Postgres for everything
Like you said "they can’t be bothered working out how to..." That's a fact which is not going to change.
viach··on Just use Postgres for everything
> Use stored procedures

For God's sake, please don't

viach··on Why Lisp?
Strangely, it resonates to me in the context of finding "The Best Note Taking App" buzz. Whoa, X has backlinks! Yay, but Y is open source! At the end of the day we all open the default system notepad.
viach··on Talking to strangers can make us smarter?
90% of times when strangers were telling me compliments it ended up with "street scam", iukwim
viach··on Is Java Dying?
Sure, it's dead. But very wide spreaded and high paid.
viach··on The world needs a non-profit search engine
99% of analogies are correct
viach··on Ask HN: If you’ve considered homeschooling, what’s stopping you?
The "real world" view pretty much depends on the glasses you wear and the observation point.
viach··on Tell HN: The loneliness of a pretty good developer
You are taking it too seriously. You are allowed to make mistakes like everyone else.
viach··on Please Stop Using Grey Text
Says someone who uses white font on purple background
viach··on What Is JSON Patch?
If you use JSON for configuration (as it should be), why not update the whole file and get change tracked in VCS? If you use it as a database, why not Mongo then?
viach··on Unit Testing is Overrated (2020)
> Consider mocking only as a last resort

Consider trying to write tests in a non-trivial Spring Boot app without mocks

viach··on Slovio, an international simplified Slavic language
I think if you speak slowly any of the Slavic languages it will be understandable enough "from Prague to Vladivostok"
viach··on A simple system I’m using to stay in touch with hundreds of people
If these other people have similar systems you could even authomate it via shared API so that they are just doing ping-pong of howareyou-imfine. Win-win!
viach··on Poll: Is the leetcode grind necessary to land a high paying remote job?
> A sequence of checks to arrive at the root cause of the problem can be represented as a path in (preferably balanced) binary search tree.

Yes, probably everything in this world can be represented as a balanced binary search tree, who knows.

viach··on Poll: Is the leetcode grind necessary to land a high paying remote job?
Interesting, is there a website which offers a set of real dev problems to solve? Like, here is the IP of a prod environment, we are getting 500 with some combination of POST request parameters to this endpoint, the logs say there is something wrong with deserialization, integration tests are green, customers are screaming. This kind of things, not "find a sum of polynomials"?
viach··on The Charles Mingus CAT-alog (1972)
Similar to how one gets a backend developer working on "full-stack" - by slowly moving tasks context.
viach··on Is there life after death? John Cleese discusses with panel of scientists
Short summary of the 80 min discussion:

- Is there life after death? - It depends.

viach··on To reduce student suicides by hanging to fans, institute in India removes fans
They missed the obvious option, to firbid high schools (this will remove students)
viach··on The art of not taking things personally
Some people can be aware of what you think their emitions are driven by and use it for manipulative reasons when you react accordingly. Probably it is a good idea to treat people as grown adults who can be responsible for their reactions whatever reasons are behind them.
viach··on The Case for Optimism
> We’ve encountered nothing we can’t potentially improve

This statement is a bit exaggerated, saying optimistically.

viach··on $100M xPrize for Carbon Removal
Increase taxes for car owners globally, done.
viach··on A coronavirus epidemic hit 20k years ago, new study finds
Is it a best practice nowadays to use word "coronavirus" for all the viruses with the particular molecular structure pattern instead of word "flu"?
