vestrigi··on Ask HN: How did you stop drinking?
Are the prices higher for a drink in the free tapas bars? I mean, no such thing as a free lunch, but this article shows that a drink is like 5 euros and you get a little meal with that, which seems like a great deal. In Germany I'd have to pay at least 5 euros per 0.5 liters of beer in average locations. Yes, the article is 7 years old and Spain is a little cheaper to live in and we have high inflation but it still seems very inexpensive to me.

vestrigi··on macOS scanning and following downloaded QR codes has been retracted
Glad I saw this and now I wonder how often something turns out to be false and then we don‘t happen to read about the retraction. Next we incorporate the false information as facts into discussions with other people. I mean, I‘m worried enough about infosec that I had enough interest to read the story but then I wouldn‘t have returned to look further into the story, eventually finding out it was false. Instead I‘m just lucky to have checked out HN once again today.
vestrigi··on Samplebrain: A custom sample mashing app designed by Aphex Twin
Is there a demo available of someone using it to create music?
vestrigi··on BlueJ – A Lightweight Java IDE
I also used BlueJ in the first semester of CompSci and it was an easy start but I think it can give a false understanding of how things actually work. The fact that you can instantiate objects and call any (public I guess?) method without using code is nice at first but doesn't encourage students to write tests or to concentrate on writing a proper main class. All things that arent't that bad when there's good guidance to the students that this is not all given. Also I'm surprised that this has an actual debugger and not just the inspector, could have used that feature very well but I thought the inspector was all there is.
vestrigi··on The Ethereum merge is done
PoW incentivizes renewable energy development for useless mining, but not for anything more than that I guess. At least the renewables can now be used to power other more necessary demands, if the owners don’t move on to mine other coins that are compatible with their rigs.
vestrigi··on The impact of removing jQuery on our web performance
Of course we do.

Edit: under “Hilfsmittel” there‘s a “Web Component Library”, hidden behind a login.

vestrigi··on Wet/Dry Vacuum Buying Guide (2019)
Practicing that often gives me the feeling that I just need any opinion about one of the many choices. Only after that I can commit to eg. buying something but I still know that I most likely only scratched the surface. I can't just try things out, I need to conclude first that I won't be able to pick the best option. Or just trust the one random person on reddit that was satisfied with his or her choice like it's your best friend.
vestrigi··on Steve Jobs negotiates Apple's deal with Microsoft (1997)
Still horrible to browse and find older posts.
vestrigi··on Ask HN: How to Handle Help Vampires?
I think a great extension to that is to post the question anyway, add your own solution and mark it as solved.
vestrigi··on Ask HN: Resources to learn generative art programming?
I don‘t think any particular style of art is ever finished. That just assumes is all about differentiation from what was there before. OP is obviously showing interest in generative art and is probably doing it for fun and that’s required for doing anything great in my opinion, that you’re in for yourself. Everything else would just be manufacturing.

Other than that great recommendations! I had the pleasure to attend a course of Frieder and must say that he is one of the kindest, inspiring people I’ve met!

vestrigi··on Basic Pitch: Spotify’s Open Source Audio-to-MIDI Converter
Note at the bottom says it all stays local but who knows what a future version might do. I think your concern is not too far off. Essentially this would mean that a tool maker gets rights to or a share of the work of an individual that used the tool.
vestrigi··on Mattel debuts first Barbie with hearing aids
Yes. I was trying to criticize that Barbie dolls hold up an unrealistic beauty standard while trying to be inclusive about disabilities, color or gender.
vestrigi··on Free stuff makes us irrational
Also the context is missing for the $0.01 Hershey’s Kiss. I wouldn’t stop for sweets in a supermarket sample offering if I had to pay for it but in a controlled study I would make a decision between the two chocolates.
vestrigi··on Mattel debuts first Barbie with hearing aids
Still waiting for the first Barbie with an average face. But I guess as the manufacturer of pretty dolls, it’s impossible to satisfy all of those demands.
vestrigi··on Preview, the Mac app people forget about
Only thing Preview is weak at is filling out PDFs. I often have to place my own text boxes by hand and when text boxes are recognized the entered text is often oddly formatted.
vestrigi··on Preview, the Mac app people forget about
Have you by chance written a blog post or another HN comment about this? I think I heard that story before with some more detail :)
vestrigi··on Food Packaging
You’re right about the bakeries, if they were willing to do that they might as well start out with a filling machine, doesn’t have to cover all products at once :)

Actually I’ve seen this at one or two upscale supermarkets. They had a larger filling station for cereal, candy and other dry goods but it wasn’t the supermarket itself that sold those. Similar to an in-store “Unverpackt-Laden” (no packaging store).

In my opinion it would be more realistic to start out with dry goods to save emissions. The German bottling system is not so bad to begin with and could be improved later.

vestrigi··on Food Packaging
So you mean local bottling at each store with standard bottles? I like the idea, but the challenges are quite tough. - No branding/consumer information possible on the bottle - carbonized beverages can‘t just be poured in free air like juice or milk, a large facility is needed - beverage stores would have to pump dozens of different beverages through one machine, that would always mix a little bit of the last filling - that facility must follow strict hygiene requirements which makes it expensive
vestrigi··on Bicycle Recommendations
Doesn‘t sound as good if you reverse the analogy but I think it still holds.
vestrigi··on Bicycle Recommendations
My guess is that the Mac was code named “bicycle” because Jobs loved the analogy of the computer being like a bicycle for your brain, it’ll let you leverage your own capacity to go much further/get things done much faster.

I mean you’re right about Brompton but I suppose folding bikes just look “too silly” for most people, that Apple would want to be associated with them, sadly.

vestrigi··on An update on AirTag and unwanted tracking
The barrier of entrance has not only been lowered on the cost side but also on the opportunity side. If people already own AirTags and know how to use them for legitimate purposes they just have to hide them somewhere to track somebody opposed to deciding to get a proper GPS tracker „just to find out where X is going to“.
vestrigi··on On Being Broke
Some job types just die out and the workers can‘t catch on because they did very specific work that isn‘t required anymore and they don‘t have much experience in other tasks. Yes, there are ways to relearn another trade or a similar one but it gets harder the older you get. Often the case with parents who have taken a longer break from working because they‘re taking care of their children or even people taking care of an ill family member.
vestrigi··on Ask HN: Why hasn’t music been disrupted in the same ways movies have been?
I think one reason is that the big record companies rely on each other for discoverability. Consider two artists in a similar genre both signed to a different label. Label A couldn’t profit from people who would have discovered their artist A by listening to artist B signed to the competitor label B.

Also they can just demand more from Spotify etc. by threatening to pull their catalog. This would hurt Spotify a lot because people like to listen to playlists that include all their favorite tracks and not just the ones that aren’t from Universal Music. A lot of people would probably cancel their membership the next day because the value of it just sunk a lot.

vestrigi··on Show HN: OnlyRecipe.app – Remove clutter from recipe sites
Yes, after all the recipe should be a tool and not a piece of art that's never going to benefit anyone because it shall not be stained. I probably wouldn't bother with updating small changes in my text editor afterwards either!
vestrigi··on Bread in the Middle Ages (2013)
Compared to ancient beer the yeast of modern beer is killed off before bottling, so you can't use it as a yeast replacement, but instead this allows the beer to be stored for a long time.
vestrigi··on Show HN: OnlyRecipe.app – Remove clutter from recipe sites
Nice if you get the recipes right on the first time but tedious if you like to update recipes and add comments. At least for handwriting perfectionists.
vestrigi··on Google no longer producing high quality search results in significant categories
I just learned that you can get the yearbook including all tests from the previous year for like 10€, the other big testing magazine Ökotest (focused on environmental impact) offers this too.
vestrigi··on Man to sue parents for giving birth to him
You can also argue that it would be wrong to deem a life with disabilities not worth living, meaning that a fetus shouldn’t be killed if it is certain that the child will live with birth defects.

Abortions are a very difficult topic.
