vesky··on Conscience Bullets – Firing Squads and the use of blank cartridges
Nice, thanks for sharing that. I heard it in Sapolsky's new book "Determined" [1] and did a little extra research since it seemed fascinating and I never knew about this.

vesky··on The Giant Ghibli Clock (2019)
The video is great, thanks for sharing it, but uhm can't help but mention that shall you ever in the future wish for your username on HN to not be tied to your real identity, you might want to delete the comment after it stops being useful. Thanks for adding to the post!
vesky··on A collection of videos of police brutality
I did not take that as implying its somehow any better. I took it as a cultural separation that allows for an excuse to forgo morality in inflicting harsh threatments. (easier to bash someone's head in when they aren't your nextdoor neighbour).

Stop assuming the worst of others as the default. Unless of course you're doing it in bad faith.

vesky··on Surviving Depression
This is almost a full day after your post and I don't really have anything to add, but I wanted to thank you for writing this post. It was honest and heartfelt.

I think the worst part of modernity is the over-promise of happiness and a good life through the constant bombardment of marketing. We grow up believing that we're supposed to be always happy and when we're not, we're told that the problem is us.

I have a young daughter and I will always try to keep her grounded about the harships of life and make her see beauty in the struggle for improvement and selflesness. Life is hard, but hard things are worth tackling. There's beauty in the struggle if you seek it. I think it's easier if you know when to zoom in on the day-to-day and when to pan out on the past decade and hope for the next one. Switch between them regularly.

vesky··on Let’s Talk about Ghastly Dishwashers
I have a 3 year old dishwasher and I've never had the issues described in the article. We use Somat Gold Gel, which from a quick Amazon search doesn't seem to be available in the US so there might be something there.

vesky··on Petrichor: why does rain smell so good?
I'm usually a lurker and rarely comment but yours was such a nice little informal comment that I had to say something. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face :)

vesky··on Books and lectures don't work
I disagree with you. People have very different styles when it comes to absorbing information. I fully understand why that kid would choose to listen to music instead of random coffee-shop noises. Music it's repetitive and easy to ignore whereas environmental noises might be more distracting. I often find myself able to concentrate easier with music than with random sounds or even silence in some cases. Silence makes my mind wander and stray away from what I'm trying to pay attention to.

I've also read Adler's "How to Read a Book" and I don't think it's as useful as you make it out to be. Annotating is good but nowadays you can take notes easily on your phone which I found myself doing for each book I read/listen to. Also one of the advice you find in your example is how truly reading a book means reading it more than once. He mentions that the first read should be superficial and fast in order to prepare you for the second, more thorough read.

vesky··on Ask HN: What books changed the way you think about almost everything?
I have forever changed my sleeping habits ever since before I even finished reading Why We Sleep. Best time/money investment I made in 2018.
vesky··on Show HN: my weekend project
Looks nice. I have a bit of pixelation on the button & font. But overall it's nice, clean and a simple idea. I like it.

You should share it with the guys at -> http://www.reddit.com/r/figurines

vesky··on Ask HN: Am I too late with my startup idea?
I'm not a developer or a founder but I hope I can help.

My advice would be to look at the positive side of this. Watch carefully what works and what doesn't work in your competitors product.

See what problems they face and fix them through your own service. That way, when you release your product, even if it's a few months after, you're going to have all the problems they have fixed.

Long story short, you could use their product as your own "alpha testing" so you can make your own better than theirs. Hope it helps. Good luck!

vesky··on Free Google-Sponsored Boingo WiFi for 4k Locations (But Not For iOS Users)
In that case I guess I was wrong and so was the source I had. Thank you for proving me wrong. I guess I should start reading the Press Releases more often.
vesky··on Free Google-Sponsored Boingo WiFi for 4k Locations (But Not For iOS Users)
...and I'm being downvoted because, apparently, TechCrunch is the only reliable news source online and saying something that might contradict it is wrong from the start. :)
vesky··on Free Google-Sponsored Boingo WiFi for 4k Locations (But Not For iOS Users)
I wouldn't worry too much about it. Faking an ID towards a wireless network is pretty easy to do. There will probably be apps that would fool the WiFi into thinking your iPhone is an Android device.
vesky··on Free Google-Sponsored Boingo WiFi for 4k Locations (But Not For iOS Users)
I don't think so. I remember reading on a blog that Mac & Windows users have to pay too.
vesky··on Free Google-Sponsored Boingo WiFi for 4k Locations (But Not For iOS Users)
I don't think the hype this piece of news got was due to the way it works but mostly because its restricted towards Apple users. It's not newsworthy by itself but because it's part of the Apple/Google war, bloggers gave it far more importance than in should've got in the first place.
vesky··on NexPhone: One device to rule them all
Sooo... basically the Asus Padfone but without the comfort of being made by a renowned hardware manufacturer and the nice feeling you have knowing it actually exists and you can buy it.

I see a bright future for this product[idea] indeed!... /s

vesky··on Nokia Lumia 920 is more retina than the iPhone 4S
Having 3 more ppi than iPhone is not much. Having that amount of PPI in a screen that's 1 full inch bigger is. And have you ever compared a ClearBlack display with an iPhone screen? I have. The iPhone is better due to the resolution, at night! But in daylight I'd prefer a ClearBlack display over any iPhone. Unless you only go out at night in which case you'll probably be better off with the iPhone.
vesky··on Live From Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 Press Conference
That's what I used to think too... until I actually owned a Lumia by chance. Now I'm rooting for them because I know I won't get that quality from other manufacturers without buying and Apple product. PS: I'd rather chop off one of my testicles than do that.
vesky··on Live From Nokia’s Windows Phone 8 Press Conference
The 920 has an 8Mp camera. I got the same feeling from all the blogs covering the event. They all talked about it through a "doubtful" lens. I kept seeing expression like "I gotta admit it's actually nice" and "this might actually be worth owning" that clearly states their Apple/Android affiliation.

I used to be an Android fan but after using the Lumia 820 for a month (unlocking it for a friend), going back to a Galaxy left me a bit sad. After WP, Android seem childish and overly hard to keep uncluttered over time.

I just hope the 920 won't be too expensive otherwise I'm gonna have to deal with samsung for another 2 years :(

http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=4433358

Does it look like I'm speaking for the whole population? I've clearly stated "me" and "my friends and [some] people close my age". Sincere congratulations if you've managed to become the next Alan Turing but next time leave the snarky comments for yourself buddy. Thanks!

vesky··on Neil Armstrong has died at 82 Today
I'm 21 myself and by what I see around me in my friends and people close my age is that we've become too accustomed to seeing instead of doing. We should start thinking along the terms of "I cannot wait to DO that!" if we ever want the chance to follow in the footsteps of a man like Neil and succeed in taking human achievement further than our predecessors. But hey... you're 17 and you read HN. That's a good start!
vesky··on Neil Armstrong has died at 82 Today

vesky··on The Tim Cook memo: line by line
You're forgetting the impact this will have on it's stock, already reaching records highs since the decision was announced. So if you think it a "measly $1b" you're horribly mistaken. How about a "measly" tens of billions in overall stock growth over the next months?
vesky··on Apple Wins Patent Ruling As Jury Finds Samsung Infringes
Honest answer: I would.

Even more honest answer: I'd probably let the Apple fanboys share the injustice to the world.

vesky··on Apple Wins Patent Ruling As Jury Finds Samsung Infringes
Reports already show that the jurors had not idea what they were doing. Many of the claims they made had no actual basis of infringement.

This reeks heavily of people that had little idea about how the system actually works and gave verdicts that were more speculative rather than grounded and based on hard acts of actual infringement.

I don't know why but reposting seems to happen a lot on HackerNews. It's not the fact that they get reposted that's bugging me but the fact that the same people upvote them. Why would you still upvote something if you know you've seen it before on HN? It eludes me.
vesky··on [dead]
I've been reading HN in parallel with tons of other Tech Feeds for years and I can't say I've ever found a clear proof that YC is discriminating in what its offering. Tons of independent startups got a boost from HN, even if they ended up in someone elses portofolio and not YC's. My opinion is that HN has separated from YCombinator for quite some time.
