vesche··on Teach Yourself C in 24 Hours (1997)
Looks to be a useful resource, but I hate the title. Why? http://www.norvig.com/21-days.html
vesche··on Underestimating the power of Jeff Bezos
Title: "I significantly underestimated the power of Jeff Bezos"

The article never discusses Bezos directly. He has a reputation of being a micro-manager, but was Bezos even involved in what the article details? The whole story seems clunky from that point forward because the title makes no sense.

vesche··on Underestimating the power of Jeff Bezos
This article is poorly written and the title is pure click bait.

Have a friend of yours on LinkedIn report you as dead. I'm not joking, and this does work. Write something about how it hurts to look at your profile since you've passed, and to please take it down.

Pssh, yes it is- alias vi='vim'

I'm sure I'd love to read this article, unfortunately I don't browse the closed web.

vesche··on Giphy plans to build a real business
I think there's interest because people are starting to communicate (express emotions, ideas, thoughts, etc) with each other using gifs/media more and more. Having a service that categorizes and easily serves this method of complex communication could be of interest. I'm not saying 600m, but that's my line of thinking.

It's really interesting, and also when I began to feel old. Snapchat filters, the popularity of livestreaming, 50% or more of message stream being gifs, etc.

vesche··on Show HN: Invite friends to SSH into your laptop using their GitHub handle
I suppose this is useful if you have two systems both behind NAT...

I've run into many situations where I'm remote and need to SSH into a NATed machine to fix something, and I typically will SSH reverse tunnel to a VPS.

From the NATed machine:

    ssh -fN -R52222:localhost:22 user@publichost
And then from the public machine:

    ssh user@localhost -p 52222

vesche··on Let's Build a Simple Interpreter, Part 1 (2015)
Neat series. Another book to add to the recommendation list is Game Scripting Mastery which is a great text for learning to create scripting languages, compilers, and virtual machines. Don't judge it by the title, it's a gem. https://www.amazon.com/Scripting-Mastery-Premier-Press-Devel...
vesche··on Ask HN: Are there any projects to do historical archiving of RF spectrum?
As vitovito and pigeons mentioned storage and collection locations are the main issues. Things like this exist, but they don't archive data and are designed for military use- Google: Wideband Recording System . They typically are mobile units that focus on fast capture rate and decently large storage (a few terabytes).

sigidwiki is worth looking at, but it's more for classification: http://www.sigidwiki.com/wiki/Signal_Identification_Guide

vesche··on Closed-eye hallucination
When I'm hungover I like to lay on my stomach and press my closed eyes against a pillow. I get similar to what is detailed under level 4 CEV. I see a lot of people's faces, rooms, objects, etc.
vesche··on Running I3 Window Manager on Ubuntu for Windows
At this point why not just have a Linux system on your local network and connect with VNC from Windows...? You can have a Linux environment to hack around in while getting to use all the "nice" Windows GUI apps.
vesche··on Running I3 Window Manager on Ubuntu for Windows
Somewhat unrelated, but you should check out pi hole https://pi-hole.net . Ads / spyware traffic won't even enter your network. I still run uBlock, but it goes largely unused.

vesche··on Ask HN: New attempt at mobile markup – keep or bail?
Definitely keep, makes use on mobile much easier.
vesche··on COMSEC: Beyond Encryption [pdf]
This is cute, but it's also just a bunch of noise. Makes a lot of speculative claims without proof or citation. Reads like an overly verbose front page junk article of some non-existent cyberpunk gossip magazine.
vesche··on Scans of North Korean IP Space
It's very likely they run larger private ip space behind these IPs...
vesche··on How we built Flow
Article aside, I don't really understand how this is a cool (or even necessary) device... I watched the videos on their Kickstarter page, and correct me if I'm wrong, but it has three functions that I don't need: 1) The outside rotation for adjustments; Mouse wheel? 2) Basic swipe gesture recognition; Um, any button, and I don't have to be hands off the keyboard? 3) Touch tracking; Trackpad...?
vesche··on Handmade Hero: C game from scratch

vesche··on Urbit: a personal cloud computer

vesche··on Ello Raises $5.5M, Legally Files as Public Benefit Corp.
It all sounds nice, but we all know there's always two end senarios if their service takes off... They grow a user base, get shot a NSL: 1) Keep the success rolling and continue on business as usual while their naive users are data farmed. 2) Pull a lavabit.

Think we all know senario two is unlikely. I'll stay away from social media for the time being, perhaps until some decentralized mesh net encrypted p2p service becomes a reality. 2020?

vesche··on What Coke Contains (2013)
> ... the inside of the can is painted too — with a complex chemical called a comestible polymeric coating that prevents any of the aluminum getting into the soda.

I though this was very interesting, so I did a little digging... There is remarkably little information on these 'comestible polymeric coatings', but I was able to find (see below) a reason as to why that is. Apparently these coatings are propriety to the manufacturer and there are competing companies who are constantly in a race to find the best coating.

It's supremely interesting the fact that drinking a can of coke is almost a magic trick right in front of your eyes. It'd be like someone holding a lighter straight to a piece of paper and everyone being baffled as to why it isn't lighting on fire. Yet when someone drinks a coke no one bats an eye as to how it isn't mixing with the metal salts and eating straight through the aluminum can.

"Interior can coatings designed to prevent migration of metal salts into the contained product are called "comestible polymeric coatings". The coatings ars polymers typically used in coil coating. The exact nature of the coatings isn't available since most are proprietary to manufacturers who continuously look for better coatings."
