vesak··on Show HN: Hyperlogs – Easy time tracking
> Research shows that businesses lose a staggering average of 15% to 30% revenue in unlogged time-entries.

Doesn't this just mean that their services are 15-30% cheaper? If those time entries are properly reported, won't their clients just be more hard pressed to find cheaper alternatives?

At least this the exact argument that is used against salary increases.

vesak··on Bulletin, from Google
If Bulletin shows hyperlocal "news" based on your actual location without the need to join anything, then there's already added value compared to WhatsApp et al.

As for moderation, could it be possible that they have an AI to weed out the stupid?

vesak··on Show HN: Interactive Ansible Tutorial
Not exactly the same, but http://nixos.org would give you some of what you want.
vesak··on Always start with simple solution

For the JSON configuration file, I suppose?
vesak··on Always start with simple solution
It's sad that the perfect template for all non-binary data, configuration and otherwise, has been around for quite some time: S-expressions.

Nobody but lispers use them. Why?

vesak··on Millennials Strike Back: An Esoteric Reading of the Last Jedi
Interesting! Last Jedi was quite disappointing for me, so I'm glad the authors here managed to bring some meaning to it.
vesak··on Bitcoin is no long the only game in crypto-currency town
What you should actually wish it that payment to such publishers would be so easy that you wouldn't need to think about it.
vesak··on Slack is down
UX mainly. This can be fixed with a non-trivial amount of work.
vesak··on Slack is down
Looks promising but quite immature still.
vesak··on Convenient End-To-End Encryption for E-Mail
> Whatsapp desktop/web is terribly slow and requires your cellphone to be on at all times.

They have a rather sound reason for the cellphone requirement, though. It's because the messages are stored only there and the desktop/web application is just a gateway to your phone.

https://faq.whatsapp.com/en/web/28080002

This seems like a more secure way to do it than what the others do, which is to store the messages in their servers.

vesak··on Intel with Radeon RX Vega Graphics: Core I7-8809G with 3.1 GHz Base, 100W TDP
Thanks a million! I've also had a mediocre experience with a previous generation x360. It is frustratingly close to being a very good machine in my opinion if just a few details were of higher quality. But I suppose it couldn't be quite as cheap that way.
vesak··on Intel with Radeon RX Vega Graphics: Core I7-8809G with 3.1 GHz Base, 100W TDP
Incidentally, HP is already selling an AMD Ryzen + Vega convertible laptop: http://store.hp.com/us/en/pdp/hp-envy-x360-convertible-lapto...

I'm waiting for the reviews to come in before making any decisions, but it looks like quite a nice machine.

vesak··on Skyrocketing Bitcoin Fees Hit Carders in Wallet
>he founded and sold MtGox

Are you serious? Sold MtGox? That's how you remember him? He was steering that particular ship when it hit an iceberg.

vesak··on Learning to operate Kubernetes reliably
Or perhaps you do get good answers but you choose to forget them, because they don't quite suit your situation.
vesak··on Firefox is on a slippery slope
Is this malevolence or incompetence?
vesak··on Firefox is on a slippery slope
>because the new version is horribly buggy and crashes all the time.

Really? I haven't experienced a single crash, and I was on nightlies before 57 was released, so I could try Quantum.

vesak··on Clean – A functional programming language
If any of its competitors had had package managers as good as some of the modern ones, C would have lost.
vesak··on Clean – A functional programming language
Excellent point. Haskell got Cabal in 2005, and even if it to this day continues to be rather awkward to use, it is something. Clean never developed anything for this.

I believe a large part of Rust's popularity is due to its superb library infrastructure via Cargo and crates.io. Furthermore, I believe a large part of its contemporary competition (say, go, swift and crystal) tripping on its own feet is the lack (or weaknesses) of such a thing.

vesak··on Show HN: Authian – Open Source 2-Factor Authentication Using Instant Messengers
I'm not sure about their reasons, but I would guess it's because the three messenger they support (Telegram, WhatsApp, WeChat) are significantly easier to integrate with, and have nearly a billion active users combined.
vesak··on Show HN: Authian – Open Source 2-Factor Authentication Using Instant Messengers
> Telegram is not encrypted without secret chat

Yes it is. It's not end-to-end encrypted, however. An attacker would need to have successfully attacked Telegram first.

vesak··on Why Is Anime Obsessed With Power Lines?
> AFAIK, J. Michael Straczynski was the first person to get a successful arc-based television series on TV, with _Babylon 5_ - the pilot aired in 1993.

Would you consider Twin Peaks (1990) to be arc-based?

vesak··on An $814M Mystery Near the Heart of the Biggest Bitcoin Exchange
I yet have no reason to believe anything else but articles like this having just a single reason: to drive BTC price down so people can make money off the dip.
vesak··on Integrating “safe” languages into OpenBSD?
>It's become clear to me that a lot of the Rust fanatics don't actually know how C++ works and and Rust is their first low-level language.

Why would not knowing C++ bar people from anything? It's a wildly specific skill, diminishing in importance every day.

vesak··on PHP 7.2.0 Released
> What are the reasons to love Laravel?

Like you seem to have learned already, the reason to love Laravel is that it's not Symfony.

vesak··on Joplin – A note-taking and to-do app with builds for desktop, mobile, terminal
1) Granted.

2) You can put your org file in Dropbox, all the mobile clients support that too.

3) Org-mode probably does this too.

4) Granted :)

5) orgzly for Android, beorg for ios.

vesak··on Bitcoin hits $10,000
Check out https://electrum.org/#home -- doesn't require clients to download the full blockchain.
vesak··on Ubuntu 17.10: Return of the Gnome

These are pgup/pgdown, I believe?

vesak··on Drinking 3-4 Cups of Coffee Is “More Likely to Benefit Health Than to Harm It”
Yeah, what I find weird is this:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_coffee_chemicals

More than a thousand chemical compounds in coffee, area of active research. Does this imply that we don't know much about coffee yet?

And more anecdotally, what I find weird is that when I switch from coffee drinking to tea and soft drinks, there seems to be no amount of caffeine intake that make the withdrawal symptoms go away. For me, there certainly is something in coffee besides caffeine that hooks me.

vesak··on Resistance to Being Productive
Indeed. And think about the amount of damage accomplished by those people who do everything that's asked of them.
