veryworried··on DHS, FBI say election systems in all 50 states were targeted in 2016
Not sure why you posted something so specific and fairly recent, it was easy to find more data. They could put you in prison for this dox.
veryworried··on Japanese study uncovers protein that keeps skin youthful
I’m sorry, I support a thought experiment but 50% is not a realistic heuristic at all. I’d be surprised if even 10% of comments here were from women. Don’t shoot the messenger that’s just been my experience when it comes to tech forums.
veryworried··on The Billionaire Next Door (2007)
Both views are valid in different circumstances.

If your business is a well automated machine where technology acts as a force multiplier for some level of human input that is approaching 0 over time, then it becomes a possession. Most tech people aspire to have this kind of business. It is easier to do with it whatever you please, including taking it in a risky new direction or even shutting it down completely. The only person you hurt is yourself.

If however your business is driven mostly by raw human labor and more and more families are depending on the jobs you create as you grow, then you are mostly in the stewarding category. You will lie awake at night knowing that many people are counting on you to make the right decisions and to be merciful to them.

veryworried··on Why Vi Rocks
No mention of vim or neovim?
veryworried··on Unveiling the first-ever image of a black hole [video]
Is this what we would see with the naked eye if we were close enough to the black hole? Or would we see nothing, because at this distance we would be dead (or the universe ended all around us)?
veryworried··on Udacity restructures operations, lays off 20 percent of its workforce
Are we witnessing the end of Udacity?
veryworried··on Aphantasia: 'My mind's eye is blind'
I can certainly see imagery, but never to the level it becomes hallucinatory.

Instead, it feels more like a background process. The more I focus on a mental image the less I "see" the visual input to my retinas. I've attempted to figure out how many visual streams I can see at the same time and I struggle to imagine more than three. If I focus very intently on all of them it seems I don't see any of them in great detail.

Certainly if I block out my visual input or focus on some unchanging imagery it becomes far easier to make my mental imagery more intense and detailed, but they can also be disrupted quite easily again by some new visual stimuli or an errant thought.

veryworried··on Berkeley HS student tried to rig his own election, exposing cybersecurity flaws
In a situation like this the best action is to install a puppet who you can blackmail. Then use them to push policies you find favorable to you.
veryworried··on Bank of America is raising its minimum wage for employees to $20
As they should. That is the point of technology.
veryworried··on San Francisco’s Slow-Motion Suicide
The argument that Democrats are all the best people who always have a genuine interest for others and the environment has it beat.
veryworried··on Fortnite and the Good Life
I doubt few would argue that gaming is a passive activity. What they seem to argue is that any gaming experience specifically designed for entertainment is ultimately worthless.

There’s games all around us if you look. I like to play the “I broke my kernel and my entire system is fucked and now I gotta repair it” game or the “write a driver for some obscure hardware” game or even “demonstrate a vulnerability exploit on a live system” game, all which lead to greater value creation and self fulfillment superior to defeating some imaginary creature.

veryworried··on It's VHS vs. Beta all over again, but worse
If this is what you want just sign up for Netflix’s dvd service. Problem solved.
veryworried··on Why 'worthless' humanities degrees may set you up for life
And for good reason, because if those working class young take a risk and it doesn’t work out (and it usually doesn’t) they are doomed to a lifetime of poverty and anguish from which there is no escape. There is value in taking the safe bet. Having a degree in English will be a cold comfort then.
veryworried··on Why 'worthless' humanities degrees may set you up for life
I have a hard time believing this would be the norm at a sufficient number of companies that it would justify picking up one of these degrees. Knowing technical skills when applying to technical companies seems like a safer bet.
veryworried··on Why 'worthless' humanities degrees may set you up for life
I am not convinced it is wise to abandon an opportunity for a STEM degree in favor of humanities when it seems like it’d be far easier to DIY a humanities education than it would be to DIY a STEM education.
veryworried··on Heaven or High Water – Selling Miami's Last 50 Years
Miami doesn’t worry much about hurricanes either.
veryworried··on Show HN: Maildown – Markdown email campaigns
Thank you for making your CLI a first class citizen. I have been growing tired of typical web app interfaces and am glad to see something that just gets straight to the point instead of trying to “Wow” me with graphical UX.
veryworried··on Google cancels AI ethics board in response to outcry
I’ve heard the same protest that MITM attack should be changed to “person-in-the-middle” attack. From west coast professionals no doubt.
veryworried··on The Mystery of Time’s Arrow
Ah Eternal Return, it brings comfort to know that we may simply be living our exact same life over and over again for all eternity. Really motivates me to live to the fullest, to have the most enjoyable eternity.
veryworried··on Jerks on the Internet: what my first DDoS taught me
Seldom isn’t good enough. When it comes to security you have to be right 100% of the time. An attacker only has to be right once. Good luck.
veryworried··on Jerks on the Internet: what my first DDoS taught me
It’s not used because any serious attack is going to come from multiple unrelated sources, think a botnet full of compromised IoT devices hitting your server with 20TB a second worth of requests. So you might as well plan for that scenario instead.
veryworried··on Australia Passes Law to Punish Social Media Companies for Violent Posts
I think it’s clear we will inevitably need those floating ocean cities that Peter Thiel talked about, where tech companies can be free to operate outside of irrational and ill-drafted geopolitical laws, and any country that doesn’t want citizens to access their content must simply block them off with a country wide firewall, and make criminals out of those who go around it. It is unlikely they will differentiate between child pornographers and unauthorized social media perusers in that case.
veryworried··on Ex-Mozilla CTO: I was grilled for three hours at US airport by border cops
Even if a Democratic regime takes over in 2021 I promise you it will be no different. One of the largest expanses of the surveillance state was a consequence of the previous President, and there is no reason to believe that won’t continue into the foreseeable future.
veryworried··on Burger King is introducing a vegetarian patty from the start-up Impossible Foods
Yes.
veryworried··on What happens after rich kids bribe their way into college? I teach them
Nobody is killing anybody. We need a peaceful, sustainable solution to let those who abuse power fall and those who have the good interests of people at heart to rise.
veryworried··on You probably don't need that hip web framework
You may be joking, but I really think some of these posts may be by design. Some of these frameworks are so easy to use and in skilled hands lead to such impressive results, that it becomes harder to get a competitive advantage with UX. A single developer can do today what once took a small team. Thus we see these fucked up ladder kicking posts where people are encouraged to go use last generation tech, so they get left in the dust by companies pushing ever forward. By the time they realize how far behind they’ve fallen, it’s too late.
veryworried··on I tried creating a web browser, and Google blocked me
How do you hack around it?
veryworried··on Klotho – There May Be a Drug to Turbocharge Your Brain. Who Should Get It?
The environment doesn’t require such enhanced levels of intelligence for individuals to survive long enough until they can reproduce.

If we required IQ tests of a certain score as a prerequisite for breeding children, then maybe you would see progress in human evolution in this area.

veryworried··on Burger King is introducing a vegetarian patty from the start-up Impossible Foods
This religious rule comes from a well known scientific observation: meat blocks calcium absorption.
veryworried··on San Diego Implemented City-Wide Streetlight Surveillance
Let me tell you something: No matter what you do, evil always finds a way. And when it does, do you really want to live with the regret that you could have done more, but chose not to for fear of some imaginary future evil?
