verve_rat··on How to get coworkers to stop giving me ChatGPT-generated suggestions?
You can type shit here. It's ok, we all know what you meant anyway.
verve_rat··on IT employment grew by just 700 jobs in 2023
But you can expect people to do their jobs. If a notification embarrassed the company in front of a customer then talk to that person's manager about training them to not be a numpty.

Stop having such low expectations of grown ass adults.

verve_rat··on Solver Performance: 1989 vs. 2024
Not really, as I understand it. The big blow up of sudoku books full of puzzles came about because some guy figured out how to create them with a program, rather than by hand. Earned the guy millions I believe.

verve_rat··on Duty to Document (2023)
People won't respect you unless you stand up for yourself. Get a little bitchy, get a little passive aggressive, push back and publicly shame some people.

Link to instructions that tell people how to search the documentation. They are wasting your time because they can't be bothered themselves. It is up to you to stop being the doormat.

It does suck that you can't expect grown arse adults to do something as simple as ctrl-f a page before bugging other people. But I have learnt the first response to any request for help should be "show me the research you have so far". Which, 90% of the time, is followed up with "let me teach you how to research this".

University (and other schooling) used to teach people how to learn, now that seems to be the responsibility of other employees.

Or, hand out fish every day and get used to the fact nothing will change.

verve_rat··on U.S. cities opt to ditch their off-street parking minimums
The US might not be full, but it does seem like you have run out of houses?
verve_rat··on The Bureau of Meteorology website does not support connections via HTTPS
Nah, the NZ secret police is too busy removing NZ from maps so no one can find us.
verve_rat··on Disney's earliest Mickey Mouse enters public domain as US copyright expires
The real interesting question is: what does this mean for our hobbit based tourism industry? What angle can someone take to make a buck now?

Special edition hand printed and bound in the Shire (aka Matamata)? Sell it to people coming off of the Hobbiton tour.

If you don't reference the Jackson movies, can you sell those tourists a One Ring or a Sting without paying for licensing?

verve_rat··on Half of high school seniors won't apply to colleges costing more than $40k
Student loan debt lasts longer than mortgages?
verve_rat··on Sony software updates breaks movie theater projectors
Not really, just a simple law that said software vendor are liable for actual loss caused by their products would have a huge impact.

Courts are our mechanism for sorting out the details, not legislation.

verve_rat··on Sony software updates breaks movie theater projectors
I think you are confused about how laws work. A law can cover sales and transactions without any criminal penalties. It can layout the ground for civil actions, to be taken by either government entities or the effected parties themselves.

Just because a law is created doesn't mean a new crime with criminal penalties is created.

verve_rat··on NY Times copyright suit wants OpenAI to delete all GPT instances
Go perform a song in a public place without a licencing arrangement and let us know.
verve_rat··on First new U.S. nuclear reactor since 2016 is now in operation
Well good job it's not your decision to make then.

If the economic benefits of adding solar to their farm outweighs the costs then farmers will start adding them to farms.

verve_rat··on The New York Times is suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement
There are two points at issue here. One, that information should be more free, and two, that large corporations and private individuals should be equal before the law.
verve_rat··on UK becomes first G20 country to halve its carbon emissions
If you go wholly off of consumption then you remove responsibility for the manufacturing to improve.

Turns out the world is one giant complex system, there are no simple answers.

verve_rat··on UK becomes first G20 country to halve its carbon emissions
The narrative that manufacturing was outsourced to China and India and those same were then blamed for carbon emissions removes agency from China and India.

If they want manufacturing industry, then they should acknowledge the externalities that come with that.

verve_rat··on American Airlines demonstrated contrail-reducing technology
So, assuming a straight line backwards, we have gotten 1% slower since 1970?

Doesn't sound great.

Edit: to prove my slowness I typo'd a zero into the number. It's 1%, not 10%.

verve_rat··on My failed attempt at using a closet as an office
What about an "On Air" light instead of the hat?
verve_rat··on String pinsetters are upending bowling
Did you forget the part about not killing people?
verve_rat··on String pinsetters are upending bowling
Maybe, but if maintaining the current standard of the game requires the sacrifice of multiple human lives each year then it doesn't seem like there is much of an argument against downgrading.

Sounds like your GP isn't doing their job? Time to get a different one.
verve_rat··on Forget spaceships; I just want my music
Try an fm transmitter?

Plug it into a 12v socket (cigarette lighter socket) and plug the audio cable into the headphones jack. Tune the radio to the set frequency. Bob's your uncle.

verve_rat··on Transparent wood could soon find uses in smartphone screens, insulated windows
Put me in the "ever let it start to begin with" camp, because I'm never having kids. That shit looks hard as all hell.

Having a kid that smashes windows when told to go to its room sounds like the kind of soul draining thing that causes relationships to end. Huge props to those parents for navigating through that.

verve_rat··on Anti-aging drug for dogs moves closer to gaining FDA approval
Looking at the other replies, interestingly the cat version is about NZ$100. Definitely priced to the market it is selling in.
verve_rat··on Anti-aging drug for dogs moves closer to gaining FDA approval
My 19 year old cat is on the feline equivalent, Solensia (Frunevetmab). It is a once a month injection that relieves his joint pain. We don't have to give him other pain relief and so can save the stress on his kidneys.

He isn't back to being a kitten, you should have appropriate expectations, but he wasn't able to jump on or off the couch before, now he can. He is walking around more than he used to, before he would spent most of the day in his box. The effect of getting him more exercise is compounding his good health.

If you have an older cat/dog you should definitely talk to your vet about it.

verve_rat··on A Cultural Critique of the Tesla Cybertruck
That's a total false dichotomy though. No new consumer vehicles in that price range lack active safety features like automatic breaking.

The cybertruck is just unnecessary in its disregard for other people.
