verve_rat··on You almost never see a clock at the mall
From your link:

> Some people like to use the salmon study as proof that fMRI is woo, but this isn't the case, it's actually a study to show the importance of correcting your stats.

verve_rat··on Satoshi – Sirius emails 2009-2011
I think you are over reacting.
verve_rat··on U.S. to invest billions to replace China-made cranes at nation's ports
I don't know, if you spend $20k per person feeding them for a year, that one billion can feed 50,000 people.

We shouldn't feed 50,000 people and do this other thing instead should probably have a very strong argument.

Or maybe they are aware of pre-online history?

The red scare didn't need Facebook to get started.

verve_rat··on Flowers grown floating on polluted waterways can help clean up nutrient runoff
The only mention of lawns in the article is this:

> Water pollution is caused in large part by runoff from farms, urban lawns, and even septic tanks. When it rains, excess phosphorus, nitrogen, and other chemicals wash into lakes and rivers.

That does not say that lawn run off out weights anything else. Did _you_ read the article?

verve_rat··on Startup Culture Runs on Bullshit
I dislike shallow dismissals like this.

I can't play an instrument, but I can tell if you play one badly. I can't direct or write a movie, but I can give you my review and tell you if you should watch it.

The idea that someone pointing out problems _has_ to provide a solution or their critical evaluation is worthless is just bonkers.

verve_rat··on Flowers grown floating on polluted waterways can help clean up nutrient runoff
> Hopefully someday we can move beyond the desire for grass lawns, since that's where a lot of this waste is coming from.

Do you have a source for that?

As someone that is farm adjacent (not just physically) my intuition tells me that run off from lawns would be a rounding error compared to agricultural and horticultural run off.

How are they going to run Zed on Windows?
verve_rat··on YouTube Oddities
I'm sorry if I came off as rude, but "your holding it wrong" doesn't exactly engineer civility.
verve_rat··on YouTube Oddities
Read the rest of the responses here. It's not history.
verve_rat··on YouTube Oddities
Yup, no option on desktop either. This is obviously not based on viewing history, YouTube is doing something weird just with the recommendations embedded into search results.

For me these "you also might like" sections in search results are 50 woodworking and 50 gross out garbage.

verve_rat··on YouTube Oddities
Nope. I get the exact same thing (to the point where I no longer search for things on YouTube, the thumbnails can be pretty disturbing). I've audited my history to check for that sort of thing.

I think YouTube has just put me in a gender/age/location bucket and figures other people in the same bucket like that thing.

(But actually, who the fuck is watching this shit.)

Edit: plus if this was history pollution then this gross shit would show up on the home page or else where. It is exclusively in the "you might also like" shit that youtube hides in the search results.

verve_rat··on Researchers have developed a beef-rice hybrid
Or could go with bice as the end product, making the plant biceon?
verve_rat··on Deleting and destroying finished movies
Yes a play can no longer be performed, but a recording of a play is a different thing.

A songwriter can stop anyone from making new covers of their song, but they can't order the destruction of your CDs.

verve_rat··on Finding a new software developer job
For me it is the second worst thing. I'm trying to look for jobs that can be done from NZ. I don't care where the company is based.

Searching for remote jobs brings up jobs that can only be done by people living in [UK, US, NL, DE, etc]. There just doesn't seem to be a way to filter jobs by "will they employ people in my location".

Infuriating!

verve_rat··on Deleting and destroying finished movies
That seems... wrong?

You can't unpublish a book by withdrawing the right and force the destruction of already sold copies. I believe DVDs fall under the same first sale doctrine, so this story seems to be missing some details.

verve_rat··on The "3 standup questions" are terrible and need to die
Or just message someone and ask them if they have a few minutes for a call?

Why do you need a extra meeting to have a sync point to ask for a quick chat.

Just fucking talk to your team mates! Is everyone in kindergarten now?

verve_rat··on EV sales plummet after clean car scheme scrapped (in New Zealand)
A major missing piece of the picture here is the introduction of Road User Charges (RUC) for EVs. RUC are a tax levied on diesel vehicles in NZ. The idea being that the cost of maintaining roads is built into petrol taxes, but many (most?) diesel vehicles don't use the roads. Think farm tractors, construction equipment, etc. So the road tax is levied on diesel vehicles based on the distance they travel. You need to buy RUC credits to pay for your use of the roads.

Until recently EVs were exempt from RUC and so were extra cheap to operate. Now there is the double whammy of the removal of the subsidy and the extra cost of having to pay RUC.

You can argue that this is fair and expected, EV owners should pay for the roads they use, same as every one else. But the question remains as to whether the trade off of more ICEs vs EVs in the NZ vehicle fleet is worth it.

verve_rat··on Adam Neumann seeks to buy WeWork back 5 years after being ousted as CEO
To be fair, it sounds like you are saying WeWork would have succeeded if only it had done things it didn't and not done things it did.

That is different than saying that WeWork was successful.

verve_rat··on The Shed: A building on wheels in New York City

Nope, fuck that, I'm out. What an awful start.

verve_rat··on Small Business and Mid Market Is Not Easier Than Enterprise
This is all true, but it misses one nuance, your "competitors" might not be other products/services. In an untried space they are at likely as not to be manual processes emailing spreadsheets around.

verve_rat··on Harvard Faces New Threat of State Tax on $51B Endowment
You said it was about 9% of the state budget and that was next to nothing.

If 9% is next to nothing then you should have no problems parting with next to nothing of your salary. I know that this would be a one time payment, I'm not asking you to sign up to tithing to me each year.

I'll just get that next to nothing 9% from you the one time and be on my way.

verve_rat··on Harvard Faces New Threat of State Tax on $51B Endowment

verve_rat··on Thanksgiving 2023 security incident

verve_rat··on Testing how hard it is to cheat with ChatGPT in interviews
I don't think you are getting my point. You can totally ace an interview and then slack off. That's it, that's my point. Not the opposite, not something else, just that.
