vermorel··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2020)
Lokad.com | Full stack, Backend, Frontend, Compiler | REMOTE or ONSITE | Paris, France | Full-time | https://www.lokad.com

Lokad is a bootstrapped profitable software company - 50 employees and growing fast - that specializes on predictive supply chain optimization. We are based in France, but the majority of our clients are outside France.

Supply chains remain wasteful and poorly resilient to tail risks (as demonstrated by present day situation). We’re talking about roughly 15% of the worldwide economy: supply chains are vast, and double-digit improvements remain possible. We want to put supply chains on AI autopilot, and deliver above-human performance while doing so.

Technologies used: C#, F#, Typescript, .NET Core, Linux

I am the founder and CEO, you can contact me directly at j.vermorel@lokad.com.

vermorel··on Covid-19, Civil Unrest Could Trigger Mass Migration in Post-Pandemic World
The French government did give 48h for people to choose their place of indefinite lock-down mid-March. Based on the limited statistics that I did gather over my ~50 employees based in Paris, roughly half of them went away from Paris just prior the lock-down.
vermorel··on Failed SaaS post-mortem: validate your pricing model like I didn't
I launched my company as a self-funded solo bootstrapper straight out of university. I took some love money, that I mostly didn't use, and bought half of those shares back at ~4x the original price a decade down the road.

2k USD per month is nothing to a large company. Forget about the per month part, just charge a flat 100k USD package with 2 or 3 payment milestones over a quarter or two. You can give away IP too. You don't really care, you're not going to build your end-game software product on top of a rushed prototype anyway.

However, you have to meet with prospects (executives). Lots of them. It's tough to even get one call, but once you get there, the one question to ask is: what's your biggest problem? and then improvise. After many meetings, you will see patterns emerge, both in types of problems and potential solutions.

vermorel··on Failed SaaS post-mortem: validate your pricing model like I didn't
Disclaimer: CEO of a midsize enterprise software company.

Frankly, I just disagree:

* Pricing is mostly irrelevant at the beginning. Even Google didn't figure out its business model and pricing long after they were created. The only thing that matter initially is to gradually converge toward something the market want (it's a journey).

* Charging per user is only one of the many many options. It does not have to be that way. Many very successful software businesses don't charge that way.

* Enterprise software is (comparatively) the easiest to self-fund. Most companies in this area are bootstrapped. It takes a single client to achieve ramen profitability for a team of 2 or 3.

vermorel··on GitHub is now free for teams
Agreed. SAML even makes sense for solo dev.

Ps: the whole company is remote at this point of time, however, we prefer to operate on site when possible.

vermorel··on Large scale reuse of FFP2 and N95 masks
Unclear. I am part of the MIT+Harvard+Boston General initiative on REUSE of masks. Log reduction of pathogens though limited heat (dry or moist) is VERY unclear. Then, if you don't control very precisely the heat, their filtration capabilities are toast. I would ABSOLUTELY NOT recommend using an oven. At this point, heat might be a decontamination option, but early results indicates that duration will be long (18 hours) under precisely controlled temperature (like 70C).
vermorel··on Ask HN: Irradiation to reuse surgical masks?
Not sure about that. Electrostatic properties of the nonwoven fabric must be preserved. Tough pathogen likes spores must be eradicated as well. Then, the "warm place" must be kept sterile, or it's going to become the infection vector. The solution must be scalable.
vermorel··on Ask HN: Irradiation to reuse surgical masks?
Hi All, long story short, it is possible, and limited trials have just been started in France with specialized actors. More details (in French) https://blog.vermorel.com/journal/2020/3/23/sterilisation-de...
vermorel··on Ask HN: Irradiation to reuse surgical masks?
I have found literature on this, look for "Sterways Process". It seems that it starts to be safe virus-wise somewhere around 35kGy.
vermorel··on Ask HN: Irradiation to reuse surgical masks?
Covid-19 isn't the only pathogen around, there are many tougher pathogens. I suspect a few days of sunlight won't be enough for those.
vermorel··on Ask HN: Irradiation to reuse surgical masks?
I doubt it. Those devices are not designed to pour lots of kGy into stuff. Food irradiation typically involve some kind of lead-covered mini-tunnel with the radioactive source in the middle. Definitively not an expert, but I suspect the radioactive sources used for food irradiation to be two to four orders of magnitude stronger than what is used for therapy.
vermorel··on Show HN: FasterMath, hardware-accelerated math functions for .NET Core 3.0
OP here. For data crunching shops like my company who happen to run on .NET, the introduction of hardware intrinsics is an awesome addition to .NET that we had been looking forward to for a long time. This library is still a tiny compilation of our most pressing bottlenecks. Naturally, both feedback and contributors are welcome.

vermorel··on The Bloom Clock
Interesting perspective! Do you have any insights whether it would work - or could be modified to work - under adversarial behavior? I.e. assuming that a fraction of the nodes are byzantine.
vermorel··on How many keywords I can fit into a single C# expression?
Well, C# 8 will be having something much nicer syntax actually:

        void foo()
        {
            object pi = 3.14d;

            Console.WriteLine(pi switch
            {
                int i => "pi is an int of value " + i,
                float f => "pi is a float of value " + f,
                double d => "pi is a double of value " + d,
                _ => "pi is of an unknown type.";
            });
        }

Lokad (https://www.lokad.com) | Paris, France | Senior Software Engineer | Full-time | ONSITE

Big Data and Machine Learning applied to Supply Chain. We are profitable, fast growing and largely bootstrapped. We have infrastructure, data processing, scalability and reliability challenges. We need your help to get those challenges addressed.

At Lokad, you will benefit from the coaching of an awesome dev team. You will gain skills in Big Data processing and cloud computing apps. Our codebase is clean, documented and heavily (unit) tested. Our offices are quiet (no open space!), bright, and you can get three monitors.

We are a C#/.NET shop, and you will be developing under Visual Studio, the source code being versionned in Git. Our apps are hosted on Microsoft Azure. With .NET Core, we anticipate a few strategic migrations toward Linux.

We expect strong software development skills from you. A taste for low-level high performance computing is a big plus. A vivid interest for distributed systems is very appreciated. Contributions to open source projects are also highly regarded. We are located 50m from Place d'Italie in Paris (France).

Thanks for the feedback!

- C# shop. We don't require any C# expertise. Yet, we don't want to surprise candidates either.

- Suits! Well, it's a B2B website. Don't think too much of it. Developers dress as they want.

- Hiring process: discussing at length your past projects. Typically a lot more constructive than teasers, but it does require a capable interviewer :-)
