verdenti··on Intel Launches $699 Core I9-13900KS, the First 6 GHz CPU: Available Now
I couldn’t care less about power consumption at this couple of hundred W range. The difference is probably a couple of dollars a month with home computer usage.
verdenti··on El Salvador’s Historic Digital Asset Securities Law Passes
Exporting electricity takes a bunch of infrastructure.
verdenti··on The Collapse of U.S. Healthcare – The Perspective of a Primary Care Physician
Single payer is good but it doesn’t solve the problem of really sick old people running up the bill for everyone. I don’t even see what the way out is. Really old people that are subjectively classified as irrecoverable have to get private insurance on top of single payer maybe otherwise you get cut off. That subjective decision maker will get called a “death panel” though. Someone’s got to make some hard decisions somewhere.
verdenti··on It's time to stop texting
I hate texting. So much fiddling with the fingers for something I could say in 30 seconds face to face/over the phone.
verdenti··on Microsoft Says It Will Give US Workers Unlimited Time Off
In SWE managers never really care about time off unless there’s a legitimate reason like a severely impacted team or taking time off at a crunch.
verdenti··on Mercedes is the first automaker to offer Level 3 self-driving in the US
That just seems like adaptive cruise control. Comparing Tesla to this is apples and oranges.
verdenti··on Iran Is Using Facial Recognition to Enforce Modesty Laws
Is this a nefarious use case?
verdenti··on Wolfram Alpha and ChatGPT
Stable diffusion’s model still won’t do pornography, hate speech etc. right? I’ve only run it using DreamStudio.
verdenti··on Wolfram Alpha and ChatGPT
I’m completely onboard with chatGPT’s “moralizing”. It may be an unpopular opinion but it’s a better experience and keeps the riff raff out.
verdenti··on It’s not just what you eat, but the time of day you eat it
Exactly, I’ve done OMAD continuously for two years now and it has worked well for me. The only thing you should be looking at is it’s hard to get all your vitamins and minerals from one meal a day so make sure you take a multivitamin.
verdenti··on It’s not just what you eat, but the time of day you eat it
This is too bad because I rarely want to eat in the mornings. I’ve always skipped breakfast because I can’t build an appetite until lunchtime. I truly enjoy the food during dinner however.
verdenti··on Microsoft eyes $10B bet on ChatGPT
I guess monetizing chatGPT should be simple, I would pay a monthly subscription for it in a heartbeat. Are there any competitors at this point that can match its performance? How hard would it be to replicate?
verdenti··on Why Intermittent Fasting Has So Many Health Benefits
Lose weight for the most part with tangible results over a relatively short time. This is in contrast to something like just skipping breakfast.
verdenti··on Why Intermittent Fasting Has So Many Health Benefits
I’ve been doing OMAD for two years and I can’t remember the last time I’ve been constipated.
verdenti··on Why Intermittent Fasting Has So Many Health Benefits
OMAD (one meal per day) genuinely works with the only caveat being that you need to make sure you’re getting all your nutritional requirements for the day. This means having a larger single meal and taking multivitamins for me. Also I avoid all processed foods, especially processed meat. I’ve been doing it for two years now.
verdenti··on Canada bans most foreigners from buying homes
As a Canadian, Canada needs way more people for how much habitable land we have.
verdenti··on Tell HN: Happy New Year
Anecdotal tip. It’s next to impossible to drop from daily to weekly. It has to be way more infrequent- like biannual for you to not fall back into daily usage.
verdenti··on Meta employee buys 12-year lease on cruise ship to see the world while working
Really not all that bad as long as he’s allowed to bring food/alcohol from ports onboard. Does it have a kitchen? Or does he have to always buy overpriced cruise ship food. That seems like it would be the dealbreaker for me.
verdenti··on Why do bees die when they sting you?
What’s the algorithm here? Can you whiteboard/pseudo code it haha?
verdenti··on I Disapprove of What You Say, but Will Defend Your Right to Say It (2015)
Only until what you say is an explicit or implicit threat to my life.
verdenti··on Kickstarter shuts down campaign for Unstable Diffusion amid changing guidelines
Every human is trained on previous “hard work”. There’s no difference and your Luddite behavior is going to go… well the way of the Luddites.
verdenti··on Merry Christmas, HN
This probably not the right place to post this but on a tangent- is nihilism intrinsically bad? It seems like the most logical thing, nothing has meaning and everything just is.
verdenti··on Can Doom Run It? An Adding Machine in Doom
I don’t think that means anything though. Doom the game is not a Turing complete programming language. You could write doom in the underlying C and then have it run on a screen in game but that still wouldn’t be doom running doom.

In fact now I’ve confused myself, what would constitute doom running doom?

verdenti··on Ask HN: What will everyone do if everything is automated?
You can always find something to do. Read, travel, cook, socialize, build things etc. none of this has to be monetized so even if everything in the world is automated, the fun is in the process.
verdenti··on ‘Perpetual broths’ that simmer for decades
Wouldn’t having a propane burner on 24 hours a day be very expensive?

Also, does it really make that much of a difference? I feel like after a couple of hours with a fresh batch you could be right back where you started without really missing out on too much.

verdenti··on AI breakthrough ChatGPT raises alarm over student cheating
Don’t be silly. There’s no way to do a writing course without extensively writing about a prompt.

With chatGPT just plug it in and out pops your finished essay.

You have learnt nothing besides some minor comprehension skills.

Same with programming courses. It will answer all basic coding prompts. You cannot learn by just reading through a solved solution no matter how much you want to make the case for it.

verdenti··on Jack Ma flees to Tokyo
Grudging upvote because you’re not wrong.
verdenti··on ‘Luddite’ Teens
As long as I can, prob 12 unless school requires a laptop or something.
verdenti··on ‘Luddite’ Teens
You protect them by not giving them a smart phone. My daughter is 2 and she hasn’t seen a screen yet.
verdenti··on Tech aims to block hatching of billions of male chicks fated for culling (2021)
Why aren’t the male chicks raised and used as food? Is it only chickens that we use for consumption?
