velmu··on The Retreat to Muskworld
Greed. His fortune depends on it.
velmu··on Millennials who buy less are happier
Huh? Imagine owning a motorboat and not owning a motorboat. Who has the stress?
velmu··on Millennials who buy less are happier
All depends. Regarding moving about every day, hard to beat owning a beater Toyota or Honda over a 2-3 year period than using Lyft or Uber for that. But if you want to move around with the latest gadgets a couple of days a week, maybe car sharing or taxi or sharing makes more sense.
velmu··on Ask HN: Books that teach programming by building a series of small projects?
The Symfony Fast Track book takes this approach: https://symfony.com/doc/6.2/the-fast-track/en/index.html
velmu··on The (Almost) Definitive 486DX/50 Article
An amazing article.

velmu··on ElonJet Is Now Suspended
Why is https://twitter.com/PutinJet still up?
velmu··on GPU mining no longer profitable after Ethereum merge
Yes. Nothing unique.
velmu··on Ask HN: Is anyone using Fastmail for their business?
I've been with them for maybe five+ years now. Very happy with them for email, calendar and contacts. Which is what I want from them.

This is mostly for personal use, but I do have a sole proprietorship too and wouldn't have an issue using it for "real business".

velmu··on Dissatisfaction in the Tesla factory in Grünheide: employees are leaving
Do it for the mission!

velmu··on Apple engineer killed in Tesla crash had previously complained about autopilot
Read the manual. You should be able to explicitly turn these off for car wash, etc. They’ll be on again the next time you start.

The fix was such that it never should have been approved?
velmu··on Volkswagen fixes seat belt flaw with zip ties that snap apart when braking
The title was "breaking", when it should have been "braking". This is fixed now.
velmu··on Power Mac G5 – Technical Specifications (2003)
This was an awesome machine with a great architecture, but unfortunately it didn't have legs [1] for the long run. The G5 processor architecture was in the end too power hungry, especially for the laptop space - with the fabled "PowerBook G5" never arriving.

velmu··on Finland Has Second Thoughts About Giving Free Money to Jobless People
Fake news.

velmu··on Java SE 8 business users must buy a licence from Jan 2019 to receive updates
Yes, nothing new here. Oracle will stop free updates to LTS [1], and users of Java will need to either stay on the bleeding edge releases or pay for LTS.

An alternative is use the AdoptOpenJDK [2] that aims to provide unofficial LTS support.

velmu··on “Drupalgeddon2” touches off arms race to mass-exploit powerful web servers
The Drupal security team is doing a great job, but "abandoned" installs of similar tools are everywhere. Even high profile users of Drupal like Cambridge Analytica* continue to use a vulnerable version. Though their install is not exploitable due to disabled features, AFAIK.

velmu··on Lets talk PHP
PHP is not perfect, but there has been definite improvement. Tooling is now pretty good with PHPStorm (from JetBrains), Composer is a fine dependency/packet manager and a framework like Symfony sets good guidelines and stability for development.

In addition eCommerce and Content Management System tools and ecosystems are still by far the most popular out there. After years of Node.js hype there is still nothing that rivals WordPress in terms of flexibility and ease of use. Same goes for Magento on the eCommerce end. Not that WP or Magento are good examples of high quality codebases.

All that said, there are no longer arguments why you would use PHP specifically. In that sense it has lost it's edge and you can use any number of languages for developing CRUD apps for the web. But if you need to get shit done, there is nothing wrong with PHP and your customers couldn't care less.

velmu··on Swatch Internet Time (1998)
I think the time would be ripe time for a second try at this . It's something tweaks to DST and Timezones* wont fix.

I still struggle figuring out times globally, without good reason. Local time could still be the regular 24h, but for business meetings, etc. something like Swatch Internet Time would be great.

velmu··on Ask HN: Best way to set up a website in 2018
I recommend self services like Wix and Squarespace. Prepare to make some compromises, but at that budget compromise is the default IMO.

Alternatively look into WordPress and plugins, but prepare for support calls along the way.

velmu··on Mapzen Shutdown
On the Github page of Valhalla* it states the team is joining MapBox. Whether this is a cause of effect will be interesting to hear.

velmu··on PHP 7.2.0 Released
Seems like a solid gradually improving release and according to some benchmarks [1] and notes from the development team, improved performance as well. Nothing like the jump the ecosystem enjoyed from 5.6 to 7.0, but still around 10% on average.

velmu··on The Performance Cost of Server Side Rendered React on Node.js
Hello Anatoli. Thank you for this. It was clearly an oversight on my part, not intentional to make React look bad. I have added a note on the article and will run the tests with the correct settings and your PR with further optimisation.
