veggieburglar··on Cycling is more important than electric cars for reaching net-zero cities
While this is correct, people often make outrageous last minute decisions in cars because they’re not paying attention. If you’re not taking the time to really look at your mirrors and blind spots you’re not going to see a cyclist. This is common behavior that I witness as both a driver and a cyclist.

I agree that the rule change is problematic, but no matter what the rule is, it is still unevenly enforced.
veggieburglar··on Trader Joe’s $2 wine became a best-seller
One of the most popular wines at my shop (in CA) is a Slovenian Haložan white blend. People may need to get some coaxing to get it into their glass, but you can't deny flavor and they keep coming back for more- especially as its $16 for a liter bottle.
veggieburglar··on Trader Joe’s $2 wine became a best-seller
Correct- also, in blind tasting, you're never asked to identify the price or price level of the wine.

Now, as a wine professional, you do care about the price of the wine because it is an integral part of your business. However, when I taste to buy for my business, I try to evaluate the wine before knowing the price. Then I decide whether I like it and would like to sell it before going through the second evaluation phase based on price.

This is not true, "natural wine" is exploding and there are quite a few wines out there that do not contain any added SO2. We get people in asking for them all the time.

However, the vast majority of wines do contain at least a small amount of added SO2.

There are plenty of expensive wines out there with lots of manipulative additives (sucrose, acidification or deacidification, oak powder, etc) as has been outlined above, but it is much more common in less expensive wine.

There is a scale between wine as a mass produced industrial product and as an artisanal, site-specific hand crafted product, and there are wineries/brands/specific wines that fill in every conceivable spot on that spectrum.

Oftentimes, individual wineries will have different lines of products made in different ways or even in different facilities. Estate grown vs purchased fruit. Physical wineries vs "private labels" made at custom crush facilities. A little tangential perhaps...

veggieburglar··on Hockey goalies are too big now
Oh no, the glowing dot! But remember this was well before HDTV. Watching hockey on a grainy old TV was not accessible for those who didn’t know the game. However, I don’t think it was successful in bringing in new viewers, and people who were already fans hated it because, well, it sucked.

Not only that, but VAR has consistently produced some shocking and unexplainable decisions. They haven’t quite gotten the implementation correct. Offside calls are improved, dangerous tackle/red card reviews are improved (for the most part, there are still some unexplainable decisions), but handball calls are still shambolic. It’s still a human referee up there in the VAR booth and they don’t have to explain their decision making at all. That’s my opinion, at least- I mostly watch the Premier League.

Agreed on Spykes and BB7. Mech discs are essential for long touring... who wants to carry a bleed kit? In all other cases though, I will prefer the modulation and stopping power of hydraulics, both on the road and on the trail.

Tire inserts like cushcore let you run really low pressures without worrying about squirming the bead off your tire, even on hard corners. They’re really a game changer- I still run decent PSI on the daily as I do a lot of climbing, but you can lower it down like crazy if you go to the bike park or if you’re ending a ride with all downhill. They supposedly decrease rolling resistance too; not sure about that but the increased sidewall stiffness is definitely noticeable.

No doubt that they would come up with “new” terroir- every spot has its own “terroir.” My point was that it’s not something that can be quantified, so there’s no point trying to game it.

Alsatian wines would typically be labeled with the varietal on the bottle, for just that reason- Alsace is known for a variety of world class white wines.

You are correct that American wines are much more likely to be labeled with their varietal, and European wines with their place of origin. However, those places of origin are so closely tied to specific wine styles that it’s really one and the same. Red Burgundy is always going to be Pinot Noir- unless it’s labeled Beaujolais, which is always Gamay. Sure, there are some outliers (white Burgundy is almost always Chardonnay, but there are some bottling a of Aligote and Pinot Blanc) but generally you know what grape/blend you’re going to get from each of these places. New Word winemakers aren’t as tied to tradition (and hundreds of years of trial and error) in what they plant, so you’re more likely to see unusual choices.

Not going to get into terroir other than to say that to reduce it solely to the soil type is the wrong way to look at it. It’s more of a holistic view of the entire growing microclimate, including soil, topography, water table, general climate conditions, etc.

I’m a sommelier and own a wine shop, for what it’s worth.

veggieburglar··on Remote work has its perks, until you want a promotion
I feel like it goes both ways.

A lot of the WFH discussion on HN goes something like this:

“I’m a senior SWE working remotely for ten years, I make $200k+, never work if I don’t want to, wake up whenever I want to, go hiking during the day etc. It’s so great!” (Obviously an exaggerated simplification here).

Well great that it works for you, but that will not translate for a huge swath of the working population.

I do agree that for SWEs and others who are able to and enjoy spending their time working independently, that WFH is likely a godsend.

HN self selects for those types of workers, so it makes sense that is the most prominent opinion here on the board.
