veganjay··on Ask HN: How are you coping with all the (mostly bad) news around you?
This is specifically to the OP, but also others that have generalized anxiety. Counseling can be very helpful and hopefully many can support remote sessions. From personally speaking, what I also have found has helped:

- trying to be helpful to others - this single mental attitude can improve overall mood, make one feel more connected, and has a positive effect on the world

- have hobbies and activities that are engaging and that you look forward to. For me this is boardgaming, which has been a bit of a challenge given the social distancing, but fortunately there are online options that are helpful

- reminding myself that this is temporary. Although I haven't quite been through anything exactly the same, I have been through difficult experiences in the past and have grown due to them.

veganjay··on PyCon 2020 Update on Covid-19
Thanks for sharing the journal articles.

According to [1], on January 31, 2020 US had 6 cases of Covid-19. And according to several news sites, as of March 2, 2020, there are 101 cases.

If I did the math correctly, that seems to be doubling about every four days or so, which lines up with the doubling period mentioned.

veganjay··on Hacking GitHub's Auth with Unicode's Turkish Dotless 'I'
There's a challenge in HackVent that involves unicode:

http://whale.hacking-lab.com:8881/

I'm not sure if the solution is unicode collisions like in the article - still trying to solve it...

veganjay··on Show HN: Space Invaders in C
Thanks for posting this - I also needed this flag on Ubuntu 16.04 64-bit
veganjay··on The Body Keeps the Score: Book Summary
Thanks for sharing your experience. Could please describe more about subconscious emotional healing techniques? How did you learn about it and is it a solitary practice or one that is guided by a professional?
veganjay··on A rise in vegetarian options leads customers to embrace meat-free meals
vegan for 25 years here. not a competition - just wanted to say it has gotten a lot easier over the years. when i first went vegan, not many people even knew what vegan meant. and many grocery stores carry items that i could previous only find at food co-ops (vegan cheeses, vegan ice creams, and so on).

also with apps and websites like Happy Cow (https://www.happycow.net) it is even easier to find vegan food on the go.

veganjay··on The Flare-On Challenge 2019 Started
For those not initiated, this looks like reverse engineering challenges.

How far have folks gotten? I'm on Challenge 3.

veganjay··on Nikoli Puzzles
I got into these type of puzzles with Picross DS (on the Nintendo DS). I also recommend: https://www.hanjie-star.com/

And for fans of Konami games, this app is fun too: https://www.konami.com/games/us/en/products/pixelpuzzle/

veganjay··on Ask HN: Anyone Interested in Capture the Flag (CTF) Events?
I played HackVent (https://www.hacking-lab.com) in December 2018 and it was a lot of fun. The same site also does HackyEaster which is coming up in a couple of months.

To find CTFs, https://ctftime.org/ is good and has already been mentioned. I've learned about a few on https://www.reddit.com/r/securityCTF/

If you are looking to learn - I highly recommend LiveOverflow's youtube series - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iyAyN3GFM7A&list=PLhixgUqwRT...

And a few good places to practice: http://overthewire.org/wargames/ and https://365.csaw.io/

veganjay··on The Death and Life of the 13-Month Calendar
Maybe I missed it in the article, do the four seasons start the same time every year? I assume they are adjusted, especially with Sol coming in the middle of Summer.
veganjay··on Ask HN: What are some of the best technical talks you've heard?
Play CTF! A Great Way to Learn Hacking by LiveOverflow https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rfjV8XukxO8

This talk is less technical than his other videos, but really catches the spirit of discovery, failure and learning.

veganjay··on Spice is throwing up problems not seen with other drugs
That happened to me as well.

Try opening the page in a private Firefox window. That worked for me.

veganjay··on x86-64 Assembly Language Programming with Ubuntu
For me, because it is interesting. It is neat to understand how things work at a lower-level.

Knowing assembly also helps out when doing capture the flag challenges, specifically reverse engineering and binary exploitation.

veganjay··on Get Lamp (Interactive Fiction Documentary by Jason Scott)
Thanks for the link.

FLOSS weekly had an episode about interactive fiction:

veganjay··on PyPy.js: Python in the web browser
There is a similar Python interpreter here: http://www.codeskulptor.org/

It is used by a class taught on Coursera (Introduction to Interactive Programming in Python)

From what I can see:

- PyPy.js benefit: runs faster

- codeskulptor benefit: can use GUI components

veganjay··on Reverse Engineering for Beginners
Skimming through the materials, this looks interesting. It takes the approach of slides and exercises. I actually expected to see another site with the same name: https://beginners.re/ which provides a PDF book.

But the best resource I've found to learn reversing is liveoverflow's videos on YouTube. Any other suggestions?

veganjay··on Cutter – A Qt and C++ GUI for Radare2 reverse engineering framework
It's a tricky art. It's helpful to learn some of the basics such as how variables are passed to a function on the stack for x86 or as registers with x64. Beyond that it takes practice. Things that have helped me are writing c code and dissassembling it, stepping through code with GDB and working on crackmes and CTFs.

For radare2 in particular, this tutorial was helpful: https://leotindall.com/tutorial/an-intro-to-x86_64-reverse-e...

veganjay··on Cutter – A Qt and C++ GUI for Radare2 reverse engineering framework
+1 for Hopper and BinaryNinja.

Radare2 by itself has a small learning curve, but it is well worth it. It's usually the first dissassembler I turn to.

Also helpful for dynamic analysis is GDB +PEDA.

For some good intros for binary exploitation, see live overflows videos on YouTube.

veganjay··on Ask HN: How do you organize your bookmarks?
I use direct links on the Firefox bookmarks toolbar for sites I use frequently, like timesheets. I use folders for items I use less frequently, but still often.

I have a Current folder for sites I want to read, that I try to purge periodically. And I've tried Firefox tags which seems to be the ideal way of keeping bookmarks, but rarely search by tag so not sure it's worth it.

Firefox bookmarks sync is nice to us between browsers, but i end up having both personal bookmarks and work bookmarks. Ideally it would be good to keep them separate but yet to find a clean & easy solution.

veganjay··on Ask HN: What are your favorite terminal programs?
Thanks for sharing - I did not know about ncdu.

I typically do a series of "du -s -h * | sort -h" and this simplifies things.

veganjay··on Ask HN: What are your favorite terminal programs?
First of all, you might want to check out the subreddit:

/r/commandline https://www.reddit.com/r/commandline/

general commands

- awk/grep/sed/wc - text file processing

- convert (image magick) - image processing tool

- cpulimit - limit the cpu usage of a process

- fdupes - check for duplicate files and optionally remove them

- pdftk - concatenate pdf files and more - https://www.pdflabs.com/tools/pdftk-the-pdf-toolkit/

- rsync - back up tool

- tmux - terminal multiplexer - almost always my first install

- tree - view directory contents in a tree format

- zcat/zmore - display a file that is compressed (e.g. zmore /var/log/syslog.2.gz)

security/reverse engineering:

- binwalk - search binary images for embedded files

- gdb + peda - debugger with extensions - https://github.com/longld/peda

- nmap - network scanning tool

- radare2 - command line dissassembler - https://github.com/radare/radare2

- scapy - network packet crafting - https://github.com/secdev/scapy

- tshark - network traffic analyzer

- tcpdump - network traffic analyzer

- xxd - hexdump tool

Bonus:

- find - find files - I often use this to find files containing a string:

$ cat bin/findstring

#!/bin/sh

find . -type f -exec grep -i -l "$@" {} \;

veganjay··on Ask HN: What is the best Modern C++ MOOC?
I only looked at one: C++ for C programmers on coursera. It was helpful to get up to speed with the STL and the new features in C++11. Some of the programming assignments included implementing the min max algorithm and using Monte Carlo.
veganjay··on Creator
Do you think it is related to the weight of the HoloLens? I find that many people feel uncomfortable after 20 minutes of use. And at least one person got a headache using it.
veganjay··on Ask HN: Learning pentesting – pwnable Amazon AMIs?
I suggest instead running a VM locally like metasploitable, something from vulnhub.com or exploit-exercises.com
veganjay··on JSLinux – Run Linux or other Operating Systems in your browser
Cool stuff! GCC works - I thought it was broken, but it just takes a long time.

[root@localhost tmp]# time gcc hello.c -o hello

real 0m 24.43s

user 0m 2.63s

sys 0m 2.17s

[root@localhost tmp]# ./hello

Hello, World!

veganjay··on Ask HN: Can we can stop climate breakdown by quitting meat and growing plants?
Switching to a plant-based diet certainly has a positive effect on the environment.

But, I wonder if it is enough to stop a climate breakdown. I believe that automobiles and factories contribute the most to climate change. According to EPA[1], CO2 from fossil fuel and industrial processes account for 65% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

However, every little bit helps and thus I encourage folks to follow a plant-based diet for environment and other reasons. (I've been vegan 20+ years.)

veganjay··on ReactOS 0.4.6 released
I agree. Although "better" depends on opinion and usage. For some of my needs, such as developing for HoloLens, ReactOS has a long way to go. But for other things, such as solving Windows crackmes, ReactOS might be a good candidate.
veganjay··on ReactOS 0.4.6 released
Slightly off topic but you mentioned it. There have been some great developments in vegan cheese, most notably Daiya. The first time I tried it at a restaurant I sent it back thinking they made a mistake by giving me dairy cheese.
veganjay··on Build your own Linux
Exactly. What are the differences?

From an organizational structure, I see that buildyourownlinux.com is brought to us by Linux Academy, while linuxfromscratch.org is not affiliated with any other organization (as far as I can tell).

From a technical standpoint, I'm curious what differs. From what I recall, there are several reboots required during LFS - but at first glance I don't see any mention in BYOL.
