vearwhershuh··on Trading halted as U.S. stocks plummet
Yes: it punishes reallocation of capital and makes moon-shot style companies less viable. You would have a less dynamic economy with organic growth being the norm. I would allow for in-kind exchanges within a given trading year to make it easier to get out of bad positions (as well as tax free exchange with gold at any time, so gold becomes the medium for non-productive savings.)

Now, let me tell you about my banking system proposal...

My family loves me at the dinner table, why do you ask?

vearwhershuh··on [dead]
It would be extremely naive, given what is openly admitted about Operation Mockingbird[1], and the well known dictum that "who controls the present controls the past" to think that intelligence agencies aren't intensely interested in influencing and controlling Wikipedia.

Well, my plan would be to treat dividends as tax deductible to the company and then flow through to the owner, as with LLCs. Capital gains would be taxed at a windfall rate (e.g. the highest marginal income tax + payroll tax rate + 10%).

The nice thing about this is that the progressive income tax system then makes equity ownership very attractive to lower-income households, and less attractive to rich people, thereby distributing ownership over a larger and more economically diverse group.

I have no idea how to get people to buy in to this idea. I have had no success convincing even my own family that this change needs to happen, and my parent post is being downvoted. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

In a world with zero-to-negative interest rates, unlimited margin available for the big players and a generation of boomers sold on the idea that stock appreciation (not dividends) is going to fund their retirement, what's the value of any company? Who knows?

Until dividends are tax advantaged vs. capital gains, the insanity will continue. Leverage, huge risks and various shades of fraud, rather than responsible business stewardship will continue to dominate the financial system.

More austere boxes at dehumanized scale. Insecticide factory, school, church or city hall? Who can tell?

I liked it better when architects aped greeks and romans, rather than WW2-era germans.

vearwhershuh··on What happens if I don't fill out my census form? (2019)
Nothing. Nothing happens. You may get an in-person visit, and if you blow them off, nothing also happens.

As with voting, it only encourages them. They are passionate about getting you to participate because they want the appearance of legitimacy, so you get obvious fear-and-guilt-prop like this.

vearwhershuh··on Why do incompetent managers get promoted?
Everyone is familiar with the Peter Principle at this point. I believe there is something to it, but it doesn't explain what we find in modern companies. It's too passive a mechanism to explain the malevolence that typically quickly develops in most successful companies.

The Gervais Priciple seems to much better explain the modern organization:

"Sociopaths, in their own best interests, knowingly promote over-performing losers into middle-management, groom under-performing losers into sociopaths, and leave the average bare-minimum-effort losers to fend for themselves."

No worries, though, I'm sure intelligence agencies weren't smart enough to get out ahead of things like search, social networks, password storage services and VPNs.
vearwhershuh··on Why poor people make poor decisions
Which is why you need extended family and social infrastructure, and cultural infrastructure, etc. as I mentioned.

Nothing this side of heaven is perfect, of course.

vearwhershuh··on Why poor people make poor decisions
People don't need cash. That's the easy way out for intellectuals. And they sure as shit don't need a casino in their town.

They need social infrastructure (families, extended families, social institutions like churches and service organizations), cultural infrastructure, and economic opportunity within this stable social structure.

All of which the intellectual class has been helping the financial elites destroy for the past century or more.

vearwhershuh··on Performant Front-End Architecture
I agree entirely, except for the necessarily ugly part.

You can use intercooler.js to wire in very usable modern UX with very little overhead, relying on the native, screaming fast DOM implementation.

Your general data api and your application api should be separated, since they are different concerns with different requirements, as you are discovering.

Intercooler is better mentally modeled going from a traditional web application -> more interactivity rather than going from a JSON data API SPA -> an intercooler application.

vearwhershuh··on Was the Nuclear Family a Mistake?
The nuclear family wasn't a choice, it was pushed on us by the economic elites who wanted to refine the old extended families (and, left unsaid, the old ethnic neighborhoods and towns) down into a more homogeneous group of consumers, with less overall political power. Catholic power, in particular, was of deep concern[1].

This has been further refined down to hyper-individualism, ideally childless, to maximize labor supply and flexibility.

The elites want relatively powerless, bickering identity groups composed of random individuals, that will not demonstrate solidarity with one another, and that will fall into line on elite issues (banking, war, etc.). One must say that they are doing a very good job of getting it.

This article is typical, well done elite propaganda, as one would expect from The Atlantic: it points out a real problem and then presents an even worse solution that appeals to our modern sensibilities, but that in fact furthers the elite goals.

vearwhershuh··on When Your Used Car Is a Little Too ‘Mobile’
Only if your 1980s SUV is capable of reaching speeds that might kill you.

I will simply be maimed horribly and die later in the hospital, screaming "AT LEAST MY DEATH WASN'T TRACKED BY ALEXA".

I am, on balance, comfortable with this fate.

Alexa: His death was, in fact, tracked by Alexa

vearwhershuh··on When Your Used Car Is a Little Too ‘Mobile’
The issue here isn't that this guy can see and control the the vehicle without the next owner knowing. It's that the entire corporate world and government can see and control the vehicle without the next owner knowing. This is increasingly true across the board, regardless of trim level.

I was excited about Rivian as a family friendly electric vehicle. Then they decided to add Alexa (due to an investment by Amazon) and reminded me why I will likely die driving my 1980s SUV.

vearwhershuh··on Ask HN: How did you fix your narcissism?
Get married and have kids.

Nothing will cure narcissism more effectively than holding a quivering, helpless newborn in your arms and realizing that you must keep this miracle alive.

vearwhershuh··on Ask HN: How to take your privacy back?
Yes, I think that's a reasonable alternative. Certainly much better than nothing.
vearwhershuh··on Ask HN: How to take your privacy back?
In increasing level of commitment/difficulty:

- Use brave as your browser

- Use a VPN w/ tracker blocking DNS

- Move to protonmail or fastmail

- Start using Signal for your instant messsaging

- Start using Tor (but that might get you on the list)

- Stop buying everything through Amazon

- Install and use piHole (and marvel at how much traffic your wifi router sends to home base)

- Suck it up and move to linux

You are still going to be tracked, but these are the things I can think of that might help.

vearwhershuh··on USB 4.0 [pdf]
Does anyone knowledgeable know if a magnetic coupling is coming for USB?

I have used volta cables for a while (I preferred the 1.0 to the 2.0) and I'm surprised that this design idea isn't more widely popular, given how user friendly it is.

vearwhershuh··on Distributed SQL vs. NewSQL
Does anyone have good experiences with seamless sharding at the database layer? I'm old school and I'd be strongly inclined to look for a simple cut that allowed me to shard at the app layer, but I'd love to hear an alternative view.
vearwhershuh··on No Rational System Would Value Tesla at $100B
We do not have a rational monetary system, so expecting rational valuations in the terms of that system is not rational.

What is the present value of any revenue stream if you think that interest rates are going to be negative in real terms for the foreseeable future?
