vardaro··on Launch HN: Sift Dev (YC W25) – AI-Powered Datadog Alternative
I tend to use logs the least when debugging production issues. I realize that's a personal anecdote, so I see your point.
vardaro··on Launch HN: Sift Dev (YC W25) – AI-Powered Datadog Alternative
Neat idea. Why logs, and not metrics too? You can characterize an accurate "baseline" system behavior through a combination of system level and userspace metrics. This profile would offer more depth than what you'd otherwise piece together with userspace logs.
vardaro··on Robinhood S-1 IPO
At this point a Musk tweet is likely priced into the asset
vardaro··on Adjustable recipe
Yeah. It’s especially frustrating when recipes list ingredients like flour by volume.
vardaro··on Babel is used by millions, so why are we running out of money?
That's TC though, can't think of a company that pays this much in base.

130k base salary is comparable to a new grad or mid level SWE in the bay.

vardaro··on Babel is used by millions, so why are we running out of money?
It doesn't really need to be taken to Twitter. There's almost zero benefit in publicly shaming your colleague like this.
vardaro··on The Black-Scholes formula, explained (2019)
The vol smile is mostly a byproduct of greater demand for far OTM options to hedge tail risk, alongside more sellers for ATM options which depresses the middle portion of the curve. I am not sure why this is a problem
vardaro··on Things I hate about PostgreSQL (2020)
For a moment there I thought was gonna be written by Richard Branson.
vardaro··on Visual Studio Code March 2021
I must be shallow but these massive feature-rich updates they produce continue to make me want to use VSC less. I just don't want to have all these features I know I'll never use baked into my code editor
vardaro··on Apple doesn't care about album cover art
Which is a shame. I can think of an handful of records that sound exactly like their cover art and I believe that detail helps tie the record together
vardaro··on Apple doesn't care about album cover art
If you want to appreciate the album art then purchase the LP. A tiny JPEG on AM or Spotify UI is never going to cut it for anybody who is interested in inspecting the cover art. These tools are designed for background listening
vardaro··on Sublime Text 4 [video]
Love the native TS and JSX support. Will my Subl license carry over to Subl 4 or will I need to repurchase a new license to use this?
vardaro··on Hit songwriters ask pop stars to stop taking credit for songs they didn't write
Yes, they're valuable because they capture many listeners and generate revenue. It doesn't need to interesting for it to be valuable.

Plenty of interesting music flies under the radar. Even without the massive marketing push some artists get, the same artists would still rise to the top producing familiar song structures the average listener can recognize.

vardaro··on Hit songwriters ask pop stars to stop taking credit for songs they didn't write
The majority of music listeners. It's designed to resonate with the lowest common denominator and capture the widest net possible.

Why this over react, vue, or angular?
vardaro··on Whimsical Guide to Compensation
I don’t think so. Most companies in familiar with price their hires with respect to seniority and interview performance.
vardaro··on Click
this is what i’m preaching
vardaro··on Click
why create the array?

for(let i = 0; i < 1000; i++) button.click()

wouldn’t be surprised if Javascript has some weird optimization under the hood!

vardaro··on Launch HN: Chatwoot (YC W21) – Open-Source Alternative to Intercom, Zendesk
I’m guessing it’s a hedge in case one fails
vardaro··on Microsoft tried a 4-day workweek in Japan. Productivity jumped 40%
You could use the extra day to work on a side project that may produce more than 1/5 of your salary.
vardaro··on Microsoft tried a 4-day workweek in Japan. Productivity jumped 40%
I worked at a large co that did a 4/10 work week schedule. I didn't feel any more productive but I was certainly happier overall.
vardaro··on Ask HN: How to stop reading HN when you are already in bed? Jokes not aside
make a nightly cron job that blocks HN's domain during sleep hours
vardaro··on Help College Students Ace Technical Interviews
> How much do these courses cost? The class is free for students. We work closely with a number of partners who help us cover the costs of the program.

How do this company earn money? Do these partners pay to use this platform as a recruiting pipeline?

vardaro··on Ask HN: When should the dev team get involved in the hiring process?
I thought it was always done the first way, where recruiter is a preliminary filter that provides the dev team with a list of candidates.

I feel like involving the dev team at the early stages would cut into engineering productivity

vardaro··on Justice at Spotify
The nominal figure of what the platform per stream pays artists should not be discussed without taking into consideration the amount of monthly active users using the platform. Tidal and AM have significantly fewer users than Spotify
vardaro··on Do Python developers want static typing?
Barrier for entry for new developers.

I think JavaScript's huge success in the last decade is primarily attributed to the plug-and-play dependency ecosystem and dynamic typing

Beyond that, not much

vardaro··on SolarWinds CEO blames intern for password leak
And its at the expense of a young professional just starting their career...
vardaro··on Are You Trading or Gambling?
“It feels like negative value bets don't exist in investment.”

Options are deliberately negative EV. They need to be negative EV to be long so that there is an incentive for option sellers to sell premium. Otherwise option seller would just get steamrolled every time.

vardaro··on Are You Trading or Gambling?
I am not sure why people are viewing gambling in a negative light here. Investing is absolutely gambling but that does not imply investing is a bad thing. The reality is that there is no such thing as reward without any risk, you need to willing to lose something to gain something else.

This is essential to option pricing, it is why low delta options are cheap and high delta options are expensive. A high delta option will have a high probability of success but will demand the investor to risk more on the position.

If there wasn’t a gambling aspect to capital markets, there would be zero liquidity as nobody would deliberately take the negative expected value side of the trade.

vardaro··on Bit (1.0) – a modern Git CLI in Go
I’m generally very skeptical of anything that abstracts away git with UIs. This looks really cool though and I like that you embedded common git workflows into the CLI
