This is one of the reasons why BDFLs while being very effective, are also very dangerous. As when there is no equivalent replacement, the entire structure collapses.
It's going to take time for these technologies to mature and for developers and companies to start using them. And even then it will be Flash like games for a while.
XUL is the biggest reason why Firefox feels so much slower on Windows and Linux compared to Chrome. So it's high time for Mozilla to remove it - along with support for Flash.
And you can use self hosted webmail instead of Thunderbird.
It could also be the next iPhone, time will tell. But I suspect that will require lighter goggles and better graphics. Full HD is just not good enough at that close range.
Basic income should be done like in the Expanse (e.g only for those with no/minimal income) and it should be dynamic - percentage based on the current economy size. It should also be spent only on domestic products to stimulate local economy. Otherwise, it will be another Ponzi scheme like the current pension systems.
Which would be a shame since it's a good idea and necessary due to technological advances.
If they make a decent AI for Total War I'd be impressed. Or an AI in Civilization that doesn't cheat. But of course requiring a mini-datacenter in hardware and time to think (probably seconds) would make it unrealistic for both.
For example you are running an ASP.net+MSSQL app and you are tired of dealing with IIS and/or Windows Server. Now you can run Nginx+ASP.net+MSSQL on Linux, for minimal effort.
Inflation is not healthy for an economy - consumer spending is. Governments can encourage consumer spending by expiring parts of money supply, instead of using negative interest rates.
>>As we begin seeing more viable altcoin systems with practical improvements, "investors" and processing power will jump ship to the improved cryptocoin protocols. Bitcoin and the bandwaggon of investing in a BTC
All cryptocoins today encourage hoarding and speculation.
Firefox and Chrome currently do not work on Wayland without Xwayland. But Libreoffice and Gnome work. You also have to use open source drivers for Wayland to work, so no Steam.
Steam has a defacto monopoly for gaming on Windows and there are over 2000 games for Linux on Steam. So Microsoft would be foolish to try and restrict games to their own app store. That would be the end of Windows as a gaming platform. And given Microsoft's past efforts failing miserably it's unlikely whatever they come up with this time can win on its own.
Ethereum has been out for 7 months already and so far there have been no useful or popular dapps. This would mean that for most applications trustlessness is not very useful. And for those apps where it would be generally useful, such as exchanges, betting. etc, the expensive nature of gas would mean that operating on Ethereum would be cost prohibitive and they would lose to their centralized competitors. And how is Ethereum is more secure than a properly setup VPS?
In my benchmarks, for accessing databases, string concatenation and output, PHP is faster than Nodejs, Go and Python and is on par with Luajit. So no.
And it's not PHP's fault that Drupal and Magento developers don't care about performance and think caching is a solution to all performance problems.
>>The entirety of Drupal and all modules have to be bootstrapped and run on every request. It runs far too many SQL queries and those queries look atrocious (nested selects, tons of joins, etc).
Agree with the above. However, PHP has reactphp which Drupal could have used.
One issue with Ethereum is that smart contracts are expensive and must run on every node. These days a VPS with 2GB RAM costs $4 so Ethereum would not be competitive even in short term.
Another issue is the blockchain size which is already 8GB and growing faster than the Bitcoin blockchain.
More bureaucracy. If they really wanted to decrease sugar usage, they could require poison labels on fruits, and any product with more than 5 grams of sugar, as well as any ads for these products.
Both Thunderbird and XUL are slow, so good riddance. Hopefully, dropping these and 32bit support will allow Mozilla to concentrate on improving Firefox performance. And add Wayland support in Linux as well.
Based on this interview, it looks like Tsipras is solely to blame for the Sunday's disastrous deal. I think his career will be finished after the deal passes.
Good riddance. Hopefully, they not only deactivate it but remove Flash and Java altogether. These two have been nothing but constant security and performance issues. And without Flash, Firefox can finally work on GTK3.
Without cheap batteries, electric cars are a niche product, unfortunately. And with the Iran deal, oil and natural gas are going to be even cheaper so electric cars would become even more expensive.
According to that page, it costs 10,880 Yuan (before subsidies). This comes to about $2000, which seems too low to be possible. Or is that without the battery?
Syriza government is laughably incompetent. They had 6 months to introduce a cryptocurrency and remove reliance on ECB for running internal economy and exports. They also had 6 months to start reforms to reduce bloated government spending and invest to reduce food imports.
Instead, they let ECB take Greek deposits as hostage, wasted 6 months on negotiations before imposing capital controls, did not get anything in return for not vetoing the Russian sanctions and signed a deal that is worse than any worst case scenario from the default. After the deal, they will give ECB direct control of Greek economic sovereignity. And 50 billion of state assets as a repayment for interest on the debt that is essentially permanent! With only vague promises of haircuts sometime in the future.
In 3 years after this new deal, Greece will likely lose 20% of its GDP and 10% of its population, as anyone with a brain will try to emigrate. That is if Greek people do not object to this deal, which seems highly unlikely.
Good for Greece. What they now need asap is digital drachma with automatic tax on incoming transfers, capital controls on imports, default on debts to ECB, haircut on deposits above 100k, exit Schengen/Russia sanctions and currency swaps with Russia and China/India. Next they need to improve balance of trade by devaluing drachma, removing expensive imports, replacing EU imports with imports from China, encouraging local food and energy production, exporting fish/fruits/vegetables to Russia and China. Also cut defense expenses with defense pact with Russia vs attack by Turkey and sell old military equipment to Iraq. Once all of this is done, they can start fighting corruption and waste, which can be done by cutting max pensions, reducing the public sector and centralizing government services.
My Archlinux based LiveUSB setup comes around to 1GB and has Libreoffice, Wine, Firefox/Chromium. That said, there are some questionable dependencies in Archlinux lately. For example, mpv now requires smbclient, which then pulls python2.7.
