vamur··on Why It’s So Hard to Get Solar in Florida
Retail solar power is not viable currently. Cheapest reputable panel on aliexpress is about $1.2K for 1KW. Lead-acid on Amazon is about $500 per 1KWH (not counting shipping). Assuming backup of 30KWH it would require about $16.2K without inverters, cables, installation or shipping. And with these it can be 20-30K+.

So it is not surprising that retail solar is not viable without subsidies. Which are in essence wealth transfer from the poor to richer early adopters. On top of that it is a headache for grid operators who have to account for unpredictable inputs from retail solar power users.

Instead of the overly expensive retail solar power it would be better if subsidies went to the far cheaper solar powered ACs, solar panel water heaters, urban and outdoor lightning.

vamur··on A decentralized web would give power back to the people online
It is not viable until there is an order of magnitude cheaper storage (e.g $1/1TB) and cheaper/faster bandwidth. For the latter it is becoming more expensive and slower lately.
vamur··on A decentralized web would give power back to the people online
Except there are a lot of OSS and side projects hosted on github. It will take a long time for these to find their backups and move to another service. And some will lose source code due to faulty or outdated backups.
vamur··on Behind the Pixel: Google’s First Real Threat to Apple’s iPhone
In that case you should consider Galaxy S7, it has somewhat smaller dimensions than Pixel, but has a bigger screen.

BTW, this is another con for the Pixel a 5" is a DOA for most users these days.

vamur··on Behind the Pixel: Google’s First Real Threat to Apple’s iPhone
No threat to either iPhone or Note 7 and incredibly overpriced. Pixel is basically a mid-range phone for high-end price. OnePlus 3 for $400 in mid-range or Meizu M3 Note for $140 in lower end are much better deals.
vamur··on Nokia D1C: The Comeback
Nokia has only themselves to blame for the downfall of their brand. There was a time then a Nokia phone was a status symbol. Now it's a gimmick at best.

If they didn't jump on a DOA platform and instead concentrated on the high-end Android market, they would still be #1 or #2 in Europe at least. Now they now collect paltry licensing fees on a yet another Foxconn phone, which judging by specs is obsolete anyway.

vamur··on Ranking TV Shows That Got Canceled
Well, Fringe should have been cancelled after the first season as it became a boring mess of plotholes. And Fox is generally terrible with scifi shows - see Terranova, Being Human.

So it's a good thing they cancelled Firefly, otherwise there is a high chance it would not have been remembered fondly now.

vamur··on Implication of sabotage adds intrigue to SpaceX investigation
It's called rocket science for a reason. Looking into sabotage usually indicates that they have no clue what happenned and are looking into saving face.

Hopefully, Emdrive or a similar technology works out - otherwise, spacefaring is going to be a risky and overly complicated endeavour for a long time.

vamur··on Microsoft Delivers Another Broken Windows 10 Update
This has nothing to do with SteamOS, X11 or Wayland. Game performance on Linux has everything to do with the quality of the port and/or game engine and hardware drivers. For example, Rocket League performance on Linux is on par with Windows while Tomb Raider has 20-30% less. In any case, there is no perceivable difference if you have a modern $200 GPU.

BTW, X11 with DRI3 has the same performance as Wayland.

vamur··on Firefox: Announcing Project Mortar
Strange decision. If the goal is to save resources, then the effective solution would be to remove support for NPAPI plugins and move PDF.js to an addon. Especially as there are plenty of excellent PDF viewers on all platforms and Flash is dead for most people.

Otherwise, Mozilla will still be spending resources integrating pdfium and Pepper Flash codebase and debugging bugs related to their usage.

vamur··on Mozilla has stopped all commercial development on Firefox OS
It will fail if they don't improve performance and home UX. Adding APK support would also be a huge feature.
vamur··on Mozilla has stopped all commercial development on Firefox OS
You can easily disable Google services on most Android devices. Or purchase a Cyanogenmod compatible device and use a third party store.
vamur··on Mozilla has stopped all commercial development on Firefox OS
Good move by Mozilla. Hopefully they continue to aggresively cut other non-core products and concentrate on improving Firefox.
vamur··on Choose Firefox Now, or Later You Won't Get a Choice (2014)
Gnome Web works great on Linux+Wayland now, apart from lack of 1080p on youtube. Meanwhile Firefox still does not work on Wayland and is generally slow on Linux and one has to enable multi-process flags to speed it up. And even then its speed barely compares to speed of Chromium or Gnome Web.

Given that this performance disadvantage is not new it is clearly caused by lack of focus and manpower. As a result Firefox usage continues to decline and they cannot compete with fast moving competitors like Chrome or Webkit. Mozilla should discontinue 32 bit, Windows XP+Vista, ESR releases, Flash/GTK2 support, other side projects like the HTML editor. That should free up enough focus/developer time for Mozilla to improve their core product.

vamur··on LXQt 0.11 Released
According to Netmarketshare Linux is now above 2%. And if ad-blocking users are accounted for numbers should be close to 3%. Additionally, the number of games for Linux on Steam is about 2700 and should be 2800 by the end of the year. So Linux desktop is anything but dead. It will obviously remain a niche for a long time but that is not an issue as long as it is a viable alternative to Windows and OSX.

As far as Linux DEs, most people use Unity, Cinnamon or Gnome and are quite content. And with today's RAM prices there is little place for a lightweight environment like LXQT, especially with QT apps looking worse than Gnome apps out of the box. LXDE could still have been a successfull DE todat had they not wasted time on merger and toolkit switch.

>>Most people who care about their desktop have migrated or are migrating to OSX and the whole thing snowballs.

According to Netmarketshare, users are abandoning OSX to Windows 10 and on a smaller scale to Linux. This is not suprising considering the ridiculously overpriced hardware, Apple no longer caring about the OS, or gaming on its hardware.

vamur··on Heavy SSD Writes from Firefox
Using private mode and a RAM disk is a quick solution for this issue. Easy to setup on Linux and there is a free RAM disk utility on Windows as well.
vamur··on What does a kilowatt hour look like?
Lithium-ion batteries require an expensive materials and overly complex manufacturing (Gigafactory). They are also dangerous as evidenced by the Samsung Note 7 debacle. Hopefully, there will be advances in making lead-acid and hydrogen fuel cells cheaper and safer. That would allow viable energy storage for solar PVs.
vamur··on Playability Test of 100 Humble Bundle Games on Linux
Snappy/Flatpak are overly complicated solutions. Easier solution is to distribute using Steam or use an installer (e.g Mojosetup) that will deploy a zip/tar archive with executable, data, dynamic libraries and necessary desktop entries.
vamur··on No Man's Sky: Update 1.03
Maybe people don't want the hassle with dual booting and a $100 Windows license to play games. Instead, they can save $100-$150 more and get 480 or 1060. And thanks to 2500 games on Steam there are plenty of games on Linux now.

And Linux marketshare and number of games are still rising, so it's anything but a losing trend.

vamur··on BitFinex down due to Bitcoin security breach - 120k BTC stolen
In that case they should have required users to also login to bitgo and approve any withdrawals. Otherwise, what's the point of Bitgo?
vamur··on BitFinex down due to Bitcoin security breach - 120k BTC stolen
Also, looking at reddit, they moved to a new datacenter recently. So could be that a datacenter employee stole code and database and then submitted the withdrawal requests from the stolen code to Bitgo. Not even sure how to protect against that.
vamur··on BitFinex down due to Bitcoin security breach - 120k BTC stolen
Maybe create a new address type on protocol level, where transactions from that address can be reversed within 36 hours with backup key(s)? Normal users wouldn't accept from these addresses but should be good enough for most exchanges for purposes of cold storage.

Though in this case it looks like it was a hack on a third party provider, which is why relying on third parties for core functions is not a good idea. Why would Bitfinex use that provider instead of a multi-sig cold storage is anybody's idea.

vamur··on TeamViewer confirms number of hacked user accounts is “significant”
TeamViewer has been a vector for hacks for a few years now. Nothing was done about it and people still use it and likely will use it even after this bigger hack and company's ridiculous attitude.
vamur··on Sad news today: systemd-resolved to be deployed in Ubuntu 16.10
Systemd sounds good in theory until you cannot disable systemd-journald and it grows to 50M RAM. And out of nowhere dozens of gvfsd* processes are spawned for no apparent reason.
vamur··on Amazon search was down
Could be due to HTTP/2 switch - e.g in the morning it was working in HTTPS and now it's HTTP only again. BTW, it's interesting how much bloat there is in their HTML code.
vamur··on Oracle's letter to Russian IT companies
Postgresql's greatest advantage - no headache from dealing with BS from Oracle or MS.
vamur··on Venezuela to Shut Down for a Week to Cope With Electricity Crisis
Venezuela had a mostly positive balance of trade last 10 years. So they had enough money to ask for financing for a nuclear plant (usually 5-10bln) to stabilize their grid. Instead they wasted money on the ridiculous gasoline subsidy, creating a huge smuggling industry.
vamur··on Venezuela to Shut Down for a Week to Cope With Electricity Crisis
The new government will also be corrupt. And they have agreed to repay questionable old debt by taking on new loans, and will probably receive kickbacks from the vultures.
vamur··on Venezuela to Shut Down for a Week to Cope With Electricity Crisis
Why would it be a disaster? The plants would be built and operated by an outside company - e.g Areva, Rosatom.

And hydro power they have today is not reliable. So they would need to use coal or natural gas. And both of these pollute compared to nuclear.

vamur··on Mozilla Pushes the Web to New Levels as a Platform for Games
Compare K-Meleon on Windows to Chrome and Firefox to Chrome. Switching between tabs, opening menu, etc is slower on Firefox while the difference is less noticeable between K-Meleon and Chrome.

And on Linux, Chrome's custom toolkit feels much faster than the Firefox XUL. Everything from opening new tab, switching tabs, menus, etc. And using Electrolysis doesn't help. So it's an issue with the XUL toolkit.
