val314159··on Ask HN: Why is it so hard to move from DA to software engineering?
don't use rails, use python
val314159··on Work only 3 hours a day, but everyday (2016)
sounds like it's 3 hours of coding / day + 5-10 hours a day preparing for and thinking about the problem. that's 7-12 hours / day if you add in an hour's worth of breaks. sounds billable to me!
val314159··on Rethinking the Luddites
check out 80's movies. The dying steel town was a trope.
val314159··on Why Does Incrementalism Dominate When the Environmental Crisis Is Getting Worse?
or we could just build a ton of nuclear plants.
val314159··on The Sell ∀ ∃ as ∃ ∀ Scam
But they had AIs that generated stories in the 1960s! Were those "intelligent"? Some people back then said they were.
val314159··on The Sell ∀ ∃ as ∃ ∀ Scam
Do you think the card catalog down at the local library is sentient? Maybe that's not enough data, though! Is the card catalog for NY Public Library sentient? Maybe that's still too local. Is Google sentient? Everyone with a clue would admit these are all examples of "knowledge" It's the same parlor trick, with fancier algos. It's not intelligence. It won't produce a human-level AI. Period.
val314159··on A pizzeria owner made money buying his own $24 pizzas from DoorDash for $16 (2020)
if you look at Uber's fundamentals thru the IPO it's clear that most of the value was a money laundering scheme for the Saudis.

where I live, some restaurant's don't use cars, they use remote controlled robots. They are also extremely cute.
val314159··on Win32 Is the Only Stable ABI on Linux?
Everyone I knew ran Linux in the late 90's, I chose to run FreeBSD. I guarantee you Linux was very influential. Solaris was its only real competitor after a while, and Sun went all Java and screwed up its OS.
val314159··on AI cannot be the inventor of a patent, appeals court rules
Why not just start a DAO, give the AI to the DAO, then have the DAO only respond to commands from the AI?
val314159··on An old programmer loses his job
the whole field's expanded; the average pay is lower because there is so much janitorial work to be done, but the high end has exploded.
val314159··on An old programmer loses his job
If you're working in software development already, all decent employers should encourage you to constantly learn, even if it isn't directly related to the job at hand. If this isn't the case, it's a huge red flag.
val314159··on El Salvador adopts Bitcoin as official currency, first country to do so
you think the government doesn't have a list of its citizens? I'm sure they have something like a social security number.
val314159··on Lawrence Livermore claims a milestone in laser fusion
for the love of god, someone please rename these "diluthium crystals"!
val314159··on قلب: a non-ASCII programming language written in Arabic
Why hasn't anyone pointed out that, except for function and variable names, almost all of computer code is symbols which were pilfered from . . . arabic???
val314159··on Ask HN: Why is it hard to find a wife now-a-days?
I could totally see that. However, too many "misspeaks" like this could come across as telegraphing your true feelings.

Sometimes how people say things is even more important than WHAT they say. (other case in point: "Decent" is a highly charged, loaded VALUE JUDGEMENT. I wonder if the Op is "decent"?)

val314159··on Ask HN: Why is it hard to find a wife now-a-days?
You want to find a girl who is:

1. ready for marriage 2. has had NO previous boyfriends 3. doesn't drink more than twice a month 4. said girl should not value money at all 5. this girl should be ok a guy who has poor social skills 6. should not have an arbitrary set of rules that excludes nearly 100% of the dating pool

If you find this girl, I guarantee you she is messed up in the head.

Bonus question: How come you said a women "on my side" rather than "by my side"? (is she a gun or a partner?)

val314159··on Ask HN: I'm in a humiliating situation, and I can't commit
That seems like it's clipped from a "You Can Do Anything!" article. He said he's full up on Generic Business Magazine advice.
val314159··on Ask HN: I'm in a humiliating situation, and I can't commit
I will PERSONALLY teach you to program for only $1.5M!
val314159··on Why are Smalltalk images considered bad but Docker images are great?
Because docker is the new hotness while smalltalk is old hotness?
val314159··on Ask HN: What is the skillset for programmers at AI startups?
I will do this if I can get a Kickstarter to give me $10,000!
val314159··on Are History’s “Greatest Philosophers” All That Great?
Um, calling Shadows and Forms "a lot like" Object-Orientation in Computer Science really belittles much of Information Theory developed in the last hundred years.

If anything, I would consider it an early version of "Signs and Signifiers".
