vaishaksuresh··on Owning my own data, part 1: Integrating a self-hosted calendar solution
I don't have the requirement of owning my data and I've solved this in a simpler way.

1. Create a shared family calendar 2. For things that need to block work calendar, invite my work email to the event.

vaishaksuresh··on Critical Security Issue Identified in iTerm2
I've opened 200+ panes across 3 monitors, broadcast to all of them to update a configuration and saved. That saved me a lot of time, either building automation or ssh-ing to all of them one by one.

I don't know an easy way to do it in Terminal.app

vaishaksuresh··on Evernote Blows Up the ‘Fail Fast’ Gospel
I know a lot of people use One Note, might be worth considering. My use-case is not that heavy right now, so just it is just notes for me at the moment.
vaishaksuresh··on Evernote Blows Up the ‘Fail Fast’ Gospel
I took all my grad school notes and audio recordings in Evernote. I even paid for additional storage. Then they decided to abandon loyal customers and charge subscription for just syncing additional devices. I've since moved to the notes app. One less subscription for me.
vaishaksuresh··on Roku is no longer a neutral platform after today’s Roku OS 9.1 update
Everything, including apps. Although, recently YouTube has been bad for me. Earlier i would almost never see ads on YouTube. I just pay Hulu more, so I've not tested that.
vaishaksuresh··on Roku is no longer a neutral platform after today’s Roku OS 9.1 update
Look into PiHole. That is what I have, some ads still get through, but for the most part, ads are blocked across the network.
vaishaksuresh··on Laptops to Stay in Bags as TSA Brings New Technology to Airports

vaishaksuresh··on Spotify will now suspend or terminate accounts it finds are using ad blockers
I am a paying customer for multiple streaming service. I pay more for ad-free experience on Hulu. My problem is not with Ads, my problem is with Tracking, which is not the same. That is what I was saying, not endorsing ad blockers.
vaishaksuresh··on Spotify will now suspend or terminate accounts it finds are using ad blockers
Ads and Tracking are two different things. Just because you don't see ads related to the tracked data in spotify does not mean that information is not used by the third party elsewhere.

If pay spotify and you listen to metallica, you might not get ads on spotify, but you might get a link to Metallica merchandise on another website.

vaishaksuresh··on Finding Kafka’s throughput limit in Dropbox infrastructure
Agreed, we regularly do 500+ MB/s bytes out on 12 broker cluster and we've tested more than twice that. We've seen brokers handle close to 5GB/s before performance degraded.
vaishaksuresh··on Finding Kafka’s throughput limit in Dropbox infrastructure
As it stands today, AWS' managed kafka is very limited. Single region and no TLS is a non-starter for a lot of places.
vaishaksuresh··on Apple is rebuilding Maps from the ground up
Have some perspective man! in the bigger scheme of things, one user does not matter to Apple. Buy what works for you.

The type that offers no facts and gives anecdotal evidence to support the opinion?
vaishaksuresh··on Amazon follows Google and Apple and bans system-wide ad blockers on app store
Works for everything that goes through your router if you set your router's DNS to be the piHole's IP.
vaishaksuresh··on Amazon follows Google and Apple and bans system-wide ad blockers on app store
In my home network, I run https://pi-hole.net on a Raspberry Pi that is plugged into a USB port in the wall where it can't be seen. Almost all generic ads are blocked and those that do get through can easily be blacklisted. No need for any help from Apple/Google/Amazon. I wish I could somehow make it portable.
vaishaksuresh··on Judge Rules Trump Can’t Block People on Twitter
Yay personal attacks! There is a difference between being an asshole and being an asshole on tv/radio/twitter. The only way LBJ was same as Trump would be, if LBJ went on TV everyday and yelled profanity and called people names. Because that is what Trump does when he rage-tweets every morning.
vaishaksuresh··on Judge Rules Trump Can’t Block People on Twitter
He is many things, but honest isn't one of them.
vaishaksuresh··on Judge Rules Trump Can’t Block People on Twitter
To be fair, no president was this rude. at least, not in public.
vaishaksuresh··on F.C.C. Repeals Net Neutrality Rules
Computer malware was not a concern many years ago, do you also tell people to not take precautions against them?
vaishaksuresh··on An Alexa Holdout Wants to Know Who’s Listening
I'm conflicted about Alexa. I keep it muted most of the time. It is also plugged into a smart outlet that switches it off every night and wakes it up every morning. I still can't shake the feeling of being listened to. Aside from the initial excitement, now all i use it for is turning on and off smart things and playing occasion music from spotify. I might just get rid of it soon.
vaishaksuresh··on FCC plan would give Internet providers power to choose the sites customers see
I get what you're saying and that is my point.
vaishaksuresh··on FCC plan would give Internet providers power to choose the sites customers see
I don't get what you're saying. How am I making Granny pay more? There are bandwidth caps and data usage caps, I pay for what I use. If I'm paying less than the cost of the resources I'm using, charge me more. Why does Granny or Netflix have to pay comcast for what I do on the internet?

My electricity provider does not charge differently for setting up and maintaining the connection based on what I do with the electricity, they just charge me for what I use. Why should an ISP be treated differently?

vaishaksuresh··on FCC plan would give Internet providers power to choose the sites customers see
I hope the Democrats are keeping a running list of everything this administration is doing. They should undo everything as soon as they get majority. I'll die a happy man if they name at least one law/regulation after Obama.
vaishaksuresh··on Reddit Bans Nazi Groups and Others in Crackdown on Violent Content
Because wanting to own other humans, killing people because of their race, gender or sexual orientation are not morals.
vaishaksuresh··on Reddit Bans Nazi Groups and Others in Crackdown on Violent Content
I don't want to argue about this on HN, because I don't think this is the right forum. You can argue all you want about how X was discriminated for having Y opinion and how it was not alright. I may agree with you on some instances, however, under no circumstance is is alright to:

1) Own another person 2) Discriminate based on something that people have no control over. Like race, sexual orientation, Gender etc. 3) Exploit somebody's helplessness for your profit.

No matter what age you grew up in, modern society has no place for such ideas. There may be other things that are debatable or in the gray area, but Nazi ideology isn't one of them.

vaishaksuresh··on Reddit Bans Nazi Groups and Others in Crackdown on Violent Content
>Does unwillingness to accept Nazi ideology make you intolerant?

Yes, Intolerant to intolerance.

vaishaksuresh··on Reddit Bans Nazi Groups and Others in Crackdown on Violent Content
>The problem is: where will the line be drawn?

Intolerance, you draw the line at Intolerance. If BLM, PETA, Antifa want people of other race/class/sexual orientation harmed in any kind of way, sure go ahead and ban them. If on the other hand they want fair treatment, equality or reprieve from targeted brutality, listen to them and see how we as a society can address their concern. If they resort to violence, arrest them and treat them like you would treat a criminal.

It is not really that hard. Right to free speech does not really mean right to say anything anywhere without any consequence.

The irony in this whole thing is, the more tolerant you are to an inherently intolerant ideology like white-spremacy, the less tolerant we become as a society.
