vailripper··on Runbook – DevOps, automated
Looks interesting - how does this compare to something like Monit?
vailripper··on The Pleasure of Designing your own Furniture
That's quite surprising - Amish furniture tends to go for a massive premium!
vailripper··on The Pleasure of Designing your own Furniture
Couldn't agree more. I'm a developer by trade, the skills of breaking down a problem into manageable chunks and coming up with a gameplan to get it done are directly transferrable over to woodworking. Woodworking is all about problem solving, coming up with a plan, and then very carefully executing that plan.

I also really enjoy the fact that you're making something with your hands. With economies as advanced as they are today, many of us have lost touch with what it's like to create something with your hands, that you can touch and use. It's hard to explain, but it's extremely satisfying.

vailripper··on Ask HN: What companies have private offices for programmers?
My company (Surge Forward) is 100% telecommute, so an office can be whatever you want it to be! Some days I work from home, or if I'm having trouble concentrating I might go work out of a coffee shop. It works perfectly for me.
vailripper··on How Facebook keeps getting more addictive
Same here. I'd be more interested in seeing how long an average user stays on facebook when they visit. Myself, I might log on several times a day, but only spend maybe a minute on each visit...it just doesn't feel as engaging as it used to.
vailripper··on Ask HN: Your favorite YouTube channels?
Ah yes! He has some amazing stuff as well!
vailripper··on Ask HN: Your favorite YouTube channels?
I enjoy woodworking when I'm not coding, so I have several woodworking channels I enjoy:

https://www.youtube.com/user/urbanTrash - Frank Howarth - Beautiful projects and his videos are very creative.

https://www.youtube.com/user/DrunkenWoodworker - Interesting work.

https://www.youtube.com/user/mtmwood - amazing geometric work

vailripper··on SparkFun: We Hear You
Why wouldn't they dilute their brand? They've built up a reputation of building a high end product. If someone begins selling a product that looks nearly identical to their own, that's of inferior quality, how does that not affect their own reputation?
vailripper··on The Most Powerful Sales Tool at Lowe's: Satellites
Isn't permitting info in the public domain? I wonder why they don't leverage that?
vailripper··on Microsoft, Past and Future
.NET is massive driver for their Enterprise business which is an absolute goldmine for them currently. So I'd say they're doing okay there.
vailripper··on Your best passive income? (2014)
I would suggest focusing on how you're different from your competitors. At a first glance from your site, I have a hard time distinguishing you from say, Freshbooks.
vailripper··on 37signals Works Remotely [video]
If I can plug my company - http://www.surgeforward.com/

We're 100% remote, and work hard to keep things fun. I'd encourage you to apply.

vailripper··on The Story of My Desk
Look into the wood whisperer. He has done a lot of Greene & Greene projects in fantastic detail:

vailripper··on Vancouver Developer Week (Nov 11-17)
Bummer - I'm just across the border in Bellingham, but I'll be on my honeymoon then! Looks like some great content.
vailripper··on SlidePay (YC W12) Tries To Be The “Android” of Payments
Best of luck - this is exactly what we're looking for. Suggestion: It would be fantastic if we could port existing merchant accounts or (better yet) existing gateways. For example, we're currently using Braintree for web transactions, but would love to use your service for mobile. It would be great if we could continue using our vaulted cards on braintree, but use your service for frontend.
vailripper··on Major upgrades to Xamarin’s platform: Async is here
That's 300 dollars per platform right? So 600 dollars if I wanted to create an android / ios app?
vailripper··on Major upgrades to Xamarin’s platform: Async is here
I'm curious about Xamarin - has anyone used it, in addition to something like Phonegap / Appcelerator? How does it compare?
vailripper··on New Relic opens its public platform to monitor all your performance data
Curious how this compares to https://scoutapp.com/

The big disadvantage I see is that I still need to manually install these plugins on each server, whereas with scount my understanding is it's 1 click installs?

vailripper··on Poor Man’s Agile: Scrum in 5 Simple Steps
My experience has been that, while planning meetings are quite painful, they're the most valuable part of Agile. Forcing yourself to sit down every week and decide what really matters is extremely valuable and keeps teams focused.
vailripper··on MongoDB 2.4 Released: Text Search, Security, Hash-based Sharding
Love seeing the text indexing!
vailripper··on Introducing Braintree.js
How recently was this? I used the CSE encryption library instead of transparent redirect in my implementation, and it wasn't bad at all.

I'm actually a bit confused by this announcement, as it looks essentially the same as their existing client side encryption solution that they've had for at least a year?

vailripper··on The Biggest Thing Since the Light Bulb
Even still, that doesn't do anything about the energy savings you get with LED...
vailripper··on Why We Switched From Stripe To Balanced
I've had a very good experience integrating with Braintree. For my use case, most of my customers have existing merchant accounts with significantly lower rates than they would pay through Stripe (or a competing product), so the ability to migrate those accounts into our Braintree account was a big win for us. Their Node.JS docs leave something to be desired, but their API is very clean and intuitive.
vailripper··on Lego Mindstorms EV3: The Better, Faster, Stronger Generation Of Robotics
http://www.donorschoose.org/ was built for just this thing.
vailripper··on F# from your browser
Because silverlight takes all of 15 seconds to download and install, and Visual F# is an hour+ to install, plus a couple hundred megabytes of additional assets?
vailripper··on Show HN: Etherpad meets Markdown for a minimal company wiki
I've been looking for a really nice simple wiki, but targeting the business market with no security besides a URL with a guid isn't going to cut it.
vailripper··on Thinking the unthinkable
What this misses is that for many mental illnesses, is that the connection between actions and consequences is broken. My brother had EXTREME issues with oppositional defiance disorder and ADHD growing up. I can guarantee you my parents made sure there were consequences, but it doesn't matter. They simply can't connect the actions they're taking in that moment to the consequences they will receive afterwards.
vailripper··on Extend Twitter Bootstrap with these Bootstrap Form Helpers
Indeed! I just switched over to select2 from Chosen yesterday. The excellent UI of Chosen, but with a MUCH better API.
vailripper··on App.net developer incentive programme
If payment is based on the ratings user give to the applications, wouldn't the "second rate" applications not make any income? Also, it's opt-in - nobody says a developer has to participate.
vailripper··on Google releases 'Field Trip' app, a location-aware guidebook
That was one of the best product videos I've seen. Engaging, with enough hints to what it does to make you want to download it.
