vadym909··on Uber's billion-dollar losses expose the fragile state of the on-demand economy
It is buying growth for the rideshare business model. Google, Tesla or anyone can piggyback on their work once the model matures and kinks get sorted out- at least until Uber builds a moat from driverless cars.
vadym909··on Uber's billion-dollar losses expose the fragile state of the on-demand economy
I agree. Transportation companies just don't tend to be profitable. Airlines are super competitive and minimally profitable. The airlines folks have a saying- they can only be as profitable as their dumbest competitor- and these are people that actually own or lease their planes and have airports and routes granted to them. Even monopolies like taxi cab companies weren't that profitable if you consider the costs of the medallions. Its just hard to make money in transport- drivers make peanuts, car companies have razor thin margins, oil is too volatile, customers are too cost-conscious. Very different than enterprise software or pharma.
vadym909··on This Bubble's Got Legs
I got burned with my 1st house- buying in 06, and did just OK with buying again in 10 and selling in 13, but 'lost' (did not make another) 50% by not holding it long enough.

I wish they would create a simple and fast basic photo editor for the PC first. Their current Photo takes 5-7 secs to open a photo.
vadym909··on This Bubble's Got Legs
That is what I thought I was doing. I bought a house in 2010 and sold at the then peak in 2013 :-(.
vadym909··on This Bubble's Got Legs
This is scary as I moved to all cash a couple of years ago. I still don't understand how there can be a bubble in money. All I see around me is house and stock prices going up incredibly. Does a money bubble popping result in high inflation making my money in the bank worthless. Fuck. First I got burned in stocks, then in real estate, and now cash?

Making the phone thin is a wasted goal. Everyone I know has a thick iphone cover.
vadym909··on Welcome to Uberville
I don't understand why biking on sidewalks is illegal. Its much safer. I can understand why not in NYC, but in most US cities?
vadym909··on Amazon is piloting teams with a 30-hour workweek
While all previous evidence goes towards pointing this to be another way for AMZN to squeeze more out of their employees, I think we could give them the benefit of doubt. I think they may have seen a segment of talented developers saying I don't want to be in this ratrace. I'd rather work 30hrs/week and make $100K to maintain work-life balance. 6hrs/week or 4 days/week. I wish more companies were open to this. It would reduce internal competition. Some of the 60 hr/week employees are gunning for promotions and probably don't care about work life balance. Why should everyone have to compete with that?
vadym909··on USCIS Proposes Rule to Welcome International Entrepreneurs
This is great for the US and many foreign entrepreneurs, but would suck for other country's startup efforts. Its like the Golden State Warriors getting Kevin Durant.
vadym909··on Dropbox Is in Talks with Advisers for Possible 2017 IPO
I think this is posturing and a final warning to interested buyers "Buy us now, or we're going public"
vadym909··on The Shame of Palo Alto: An Interview with Kate Downing on Affordable Housing
That is why a startup is needed. Airbnb and Uber showed how to get past regulations.
vadym909··on The Shame of Palo Alto: An Interview with Kate Downing on Affordable Housing
The weather man. You get to 'live' almost twice as many hours because of the weather. Add top companies, upcoming companies, jobs, schools, colleges, city stuff, nature stuff, Sports and you just can't beat it. After all you only live once.
vadym909··on The Shame of Palo Alto: An Interview with Kate Downing on Affordable Housing
I'm surprised that none of the YCs startups have tried to solve this problem. People really want 'affordable housing' and YC's motto to its startups is to 'make something people want'- so what gives?
vadym909··on Randstad buys Monster for $429M as recruitment consolidation continues
Companies won't give you the 20% pay bump if you approached them yourself.

Its a good deal for the company because they outsource the risk of hiring a recruiter fulltime and not finding a candidate.

Some recruiting agencies make a lot of money but many go under. Companies pay a recruiting agency only if the agency found them the candidate. With lots of agencies competing, the fee is not certain. The good sourcers/recruiters definitely find it more profitable to work on their own.

vadym909··on Randstad buys Monster for $429M as recruitment consolidation continues
I think it's becoming clear that job boards have failed as model. Simplyhired, now Monster. I think employers are tired of posting jobs or scouring the resume databases have realized it might make sense to just outsource the whole recruiting thing. Which is why Indeed is now owned by Recruit a Japanese staffing firm and Monster by Randstad. That leaves Adecco to pick up Careerbuilder.
vadym909··on Randstad buys Monster for $429M as recruitment consolidation continues
I'm not sure what the exec meant? It can be a failure or a huge success? This is such a generic statement
vadym909··on Amazon launches Prime Air, its own dedicated cargo planes to speed delivery
On this front Walmart is so much better.
vadym909··on Amazon launches Prime Air, its own dedicated cargo planes to speed delivery
If they are smart they would raise prices now (for anticipated lower volumes) while they have a small time window in which Amazon needs them while it scales. If they don't they will be toast.
vadym909··on Uber and Under: China’s Hometown Advantage Claims Another Victim
The Chinese public values hardware and tangible stuff. Plus its made in China, so the Chinese Govt lets them live. Apple, VW, GM, Caterpillar, Fashion.

The Chinese public don't much value IP, software or services and so the Chinese Govt doesn't need to let anyone get a foothold. Plus these companies don't really help the Chinese economy with jobs, etc. so Google, Uber, Software? Consulting? Banks?

vadym909··on China, Not Silicon Valley, Is Cutting Edge in Mobile Tech

vadym909··on Massachusetts Bans Employers from Asking Applicants About Previous Pay
Salaries seem lower today than the value add because some companies are being valued very highly. $20B for Whatsapp. $26B for LinkedIn. If you were risk taking and joined a no name startup early enough for a less than market salary- and it turns out successful, you do get that share of the pie.

If you want a cushy secure job writing hr applications for a Fortune 100 company, or some code for facebook when it reached 1B users, then its crazy to expect a large share of 'the profits' as the company's profits are spoken for by the owners who bought its shares and they are happy to get rid of expensive engineers as the engineering prowess you are bringing is not required as much now.

vadym909··on Facebook Posts Strong Profit and Revenue Growth
>waste their time with Facebook That's a bold statement. People like me use it as a lightweight option to stay abreast with whats going on with friends and family without having to invest in a long call or email. You may think I don't care, but I do- but its hard and time consuming to call 50 people and ask 'Did you go somewhere this summer? How was it? What did you see?'. Instead I just 'like' when I see a cool picture they share and when I call them I can start by saying 'Wow- you had such a good time in Paris- why don't you visit us next year?'
vadym909··on British Columbia to target foreign real estate buyers with new tax
just like Silicon Valley. Locals save and save but when they get ready to buy, the prices have gone up due to all cash offers from Mainland China whose buyers are buying sight unseen for god knows what reasons.

The only solution may be to require such foreign buyers to publish their real names instead of some shell Hong Kong or Cayman Island companies. If the buyer is a corrupt official using bribe money or a crooked businessman hiding black money, making this information public to the PRC Govt/ people, could get them investigated. This should dissuade people using ill gotten gains to inflate house prices here causing a speculation bubble. If they are legitimate, then there should be nothing to fear.

vadym909··on Equidate's new stock market for private tech offers in-depth data on startups
Can you explain in plain English what 'insider' information you publish and how you allow trading in private companies when this clearly is not possible elsewhere. And if it is possible why don't these companies just IPO.

Could it be that golf uses the term because par means equal. Its a pretty common phrase and means the same as 'not at par', 'up to snuff','not at the same level'. I've especially seen it used in hiring (high bar, below the bar, not at the bar'. Probably comes from the high jumper's bar.
vadym909··on Lyft losing as much as $50M a month, president confirms
Seriously- FedEx, UPS, Walmart have incredibly efficient logistics and operate with very thin margins. If Uber Lyft are relying on going up against them instead of the inefficient taxis- they are seriously smoking something illegal.
