vadym909··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
if this is really that - this is clearly evidence of collusion amongst employers with indirect pressure on them to keep salalries at a certain level
vadym909··on Tell HN: Salary data is for sale
what is the work number? is this deliberately a confusingly made up name of company and what they do?
vadym909··on Amazon and the “profitless business model” fallacy (2013)
Amazon is a utility for most now and trumps everything except the most urgent. Here's my buying channels depending on how soon i need stuff

- do i need it today- Costco, Walmart, Target, Safeway, Dicks Sporting Goods

- can i wait till tmrow- Amzn next day to my doorstep. No? resort to above options

- can i wait 2 days for a better choice- Amzn Prime

- No hurry- a week ok?- Amzn marketplace, eBay

vadym909··on Ask HN: Strategies to land fully remote $250k+ job
Almost every large tech company now has fully remote tech roles for senior developers. $250k total comp is average for someone w 4-8 years experience.

You just need to be good in coding, data structures and system design - and be able to show this in the interview - achievable with some practice.

vadym909··on Ask HN: Are most of us developers lying about how much work we do?
don't feel too bad. There are a lot of CEOs that get $20M salaries for doing nothing. If the company succeeds due to market conditions they are seen as heroes- if the company fails for market conditions they are seen as losers. They may have some impact but mostly its luck.
vadym909··on Leaving Quora after 10 years of answering questions
I agree wholeheartedly. It was the place once upon a time to be recognized and heard. Its not anymore. So I took down my answers and put them on my own blog- to get traffic to my site. Worked great.
vadym909··on Workers quit jobs in droves to become their own bosses
The base hurdle to be entrepreneur w family is $2.5-5k rent + $2k health for family + food and clothing per month- just to break even.
vadym909··on Zillow just gave us a look at machine learning's future
This is exactly the problem with AI for recruiting too. Humans are smart and will evolve their strategy to counter Machine learning strategies.
vadym909··on Death by Bureaucracy
Wow- reading this I was like- well he shouldn’t have murdered his victim then. And then I realized he was being killed for possession of drugs. Wtf the headline should read- death for possession not the stupid complain of the bureaucracy involved in killing him
vadym909··on Tesla's Car Insurance Monitors 'Real-Time Driving Behavior' in Texas
I'm a safe/slow driver and I'd sign up for this. I'd love insurance companies to price out speeding and reckless drivers for the sake of safety of others.
vadym909··on Tesla’s headquarters will move to Austin
I'm glad with all these tech companies moving to Texas, it is very likely to go Blue next election!
vadym909··on Google illegally underpaid thousands of workers
Atleast the European countries have laws that require equal pay for full-time vs contractors. Its about time the US instituted such laws too. It's just gross how companies get away with using contractors for the same job as full-timers but treat them like lepers that don't deserve equal pay or benefits.
vadym909··on 1 out of every 153 American workers is an Amazon employee
You wait

Product Makers will at some point realize they can sell direct and do it without AMZN. e.g. Nike, Apple

Competitors- Dick's, Best Buy will give product makers ultimatums- if we get undercut by AMZn, we're not going to sell your stuff- so you decide. Its nice to be able to buy and pickup curbside same day

Customers- I already find Amzn beating prices on eBay about 25% of the time. eBay shipping times are improving too

vadym909··on Japan's government plans to encourage 4-day workweek, but experts split
it easily does- 20-30 min to walk/bike/drive back and forth to cafe / restaurant- 5-10 min to order/get food, 15-20 min to eat.
vadym909··on Future of work will be 5-hour days, 4-day workweek, flexible staggered schedules
I have a sneaking suspicion that if you are a knowledge worker you are already probably doing this unconciously. Online research, entertainment and shopping for non-work related stuff, errands, stock trading, etc. Working from home makes this easier because you can have a non-work computer right next to your work laptop so no chance of the company snooping into what you are doing.

Ofcourse if you work where every hour counts- construction, nursing, waitressing, driving for uber- it'll be a while till people figure out they need to be paid more or work less for the same $

vadym909··on Talk cancelled due to slides critical of Google and Facebook
not too hard to google him/it and find out if you are really interested! The point though is not this specific event.
vadym909··on How Big Tech got so big: hundreds of acquisitions
I think you are mistaken. Big Tech has the same 'human' problems as classic companies- bloated middle management, fluff work, empire buiding, process, etc. They get away with it because they are growing and can increase prices right now. Sooner or later when the vast majority of companies realize they don't have to buy software at inflated prices- the house of cards will collapse. hypothetical e.g. GM will question if they should spend $1K/car sold on advertising, CRM and internal IT if their profit is $900/car.
vadym909··on Amtrak's 2035 map has people talking about the future of U.S. train travel
Just hire the Chinese and they'll get it done. on time and under budget. The US is ideal for high speed rail- long distances - plenty of land - almost all the objections are mostly bogus, political, etc,. Nothing significant ever was achieved without giving up something. https://youtu.be/aXo7wi488Eo
vadym909··on SF poop-testing startup, once compared to Theranos, charged in $60M fraud scheme
I saw their 500 startup demoday presntation and thought what a cool idea. Unfortunately, I think a lot of newer startups today have good ideas that don't pan out or convert into sucessfull business -but since they raised money feel obligated to deliver by hook or crook.
vadym909··on Launch HN: Mezli (YC W21) – Robotic restaurants that serve healthy fast food
I wish you all the best. My kids love Sajj's chicken shwarma bowls. They split a $12 bowl because it is large, but the family bill still comes to $40/meal. Looking forward to halving that! Request your next location to be in Mtn View - San Antonio Center- near Walmart
vadym909··on Google Stadia shuts down internal studios, changing business focus
Opposite. My kid built a gaming PC and uses it for school from home and gaming from 7am-9pm or 90% of his waking hours
vadym909··on High Short Interest Stocks
Explains why Chamath was ranting about shorting hedge funds on TV...
vadym909··on High Short Interest Stocks
Many stocks grow into it over time: AMZN
vadym909··on Robinhood is said to draw on bank credit lines amid tumult
Surprisingly Peterffy came across as super transparent, trustworthy and honest unlike Vlad. He stated outright this was a joke and and that GME is a $17 stock trading at a crazy price because of some games (short squeeze) and he's not sure the people on the hook to pay up for the shorts are going to be able to- which is why they have to stop and get a handle on it. https://www.cnbc.com/video/2021/01/28/pro-watch-cnbcs-full-i... .
vadym909··on Waymo CEO dismisses Tesla self-driving plan: “This is not how it works”
Its so frustrating when smart people can't speak plainly enough. Most people will see this video with a tile like "Watch Tesla's Full Self-Driving navigate from SF to LA with (almost) no help" and assume Tesla is FSD capable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQG2IynmRf8&feature=emb_logo

How then can Waymo say its not? Why can't they instead release a video comparing the Pros and Cons of Tesla FSD vs theirs.

vadym909··on DoorDash from Application to IPO
The 25% fee goes mostly to DD, not to the driver who delivered. DD and other app's value is removing the friction of ordering and paying. Of all the participants in the supply chain- farmer, cook, business owner, delivery guy- the ordering app (tech) took the most outsized piece of the pie.

To be fair though, not all tech is similar. I don't think people mind Amzn charging the seller 5-15% and paying the delivery guys whatever it takes. I hope food delivery apps become more reasonably priced- or then maybe Amzn comes after their margin!

vadym909··on California appeals court rules Uber, Lyft must reclassify drivers as employees
I really don't get why these companies are so resistant to make them employees. No one can force them to pay rich benefits. Employer taxes only cost 10%. If Walmart, Starbucks, Chipotle, Amazon can do it so can they.
vadym909··on EULA Found on a Package of Fruit
Really sweet grapes that kids love avbl at Costco Mountain View. I can imagine why they don't want it copied.
vadym909··on Matt Levine makes sense of Wall Street like none other
I agree it is benign. There are only a few Bill Gates level rich people donating buildings. Sure it is corrupt strictly speaking but would you rather a poor student compete with one Gates kid or 100 millionaire kids that have discovered other cheaper corrupt openings?
vadym909··on Rideshare operations are being suspended in California
Not just healthcare- but other beenfits like sick leave, etc. and collecting taxes like unemployment insurance. When you do this -you better not leave any loopholes because companies have proven they will use it. IF Uber was successful, other companies would start fractional hiring of employees. I only need Finance people 2 days/week- they can come in anytime they like, work as long as they want and can work at other companies too. We'll save on taxes and benefits and they will enjoy their freedom. Too bad the Govt will lose taxes and the workers their benefits.
