v-yadli··on Haiku R1/beta6 has been released
I doubt this, but hear me out for the reason:

I worked on a Elektron MachineDrum firmware fix that corrected the MIDI jittering due to incorrect ISR configuration. MD itself is pretty tight already with its RTOS but the fix brought it down to microseconds. I was pretty proud of it because it solves a few phasing problems.

I then turned this over to a friend running a lot of Elektron boxes, and his reaction was, "you mean the sound we've got is wrong? how strange!"

So while I feel the same urge to have ultra tight MIDI timing, I doubt this would be a general interest of the non-technical musicians out there.

I read and giggle to the end with great interest, and now I'm told it's just a joke.

Nyawww!

v-yadli··on GPD Pocket 4 Speaker DSP: Configuring PipeWire so laptop speakers sound better
Note, this is not all about EQ. A lot of other techniques are also used, e.g. limiter, exciter (to shift the energy from mid to low), and some psychological tricks to make you believe it's making a fat bass sound, etc.

v-yadli··on Windows 11 in Svelte
It failed once recently after an system update. Blank desktop with no shell. Had to ctrl-shift-esc and manually download latest `ep_setup.exe` and run it to get the desktop back. https://devblogs.microsoft.com/oldnewthing/20230324-00/?p=10... Raymond did not point out which "desktop enhancement software" it was but I suspect this is it.

Yep Talisman! I received a shareware copy of it on a magazine CD. Totally blown away by the true color UI and pre-arranged widget bits here and there. The thing's born in the 9X era but rocks a definite XP vibe.

Early 00s Chinese "computer cities"? Noooo. You don't do that to merchants. Merchants do that to you.
v-yadli··on Why do arrays start at 0?
It's that off-by-one nature of intervals that always bumps me. The difference between note a and b is (a-b+1). Calling an octave "an octave" feels to me like calling a numeric system with digits 0x0-0xf as "base 17"
v-yadli··on Why do arrays start at 0?
I'm fine with 0-based, 1-based or anything-based arrays (I recall it being convenient solving 8queen with pascal), but for Rage-Over-A-Lost-Penny sake, music note intervals are always beyond my understanding.

Same pitched notes are called "interval 1" and there goes thirds, fifths, sevenths... All off-by-one in my base-offset-addressing mind... And then major vs. minor which creates all kinds of "aliased addresses"...

I'd really love a BASE-12 floating number representation. Like 4.00 for the middle C; Chords can be then represented by a tuple of such numbers -- major = [+0.04, +0.07] (some sequencers already do something like that and I'm far better at reading that kind of sequencer data than a sheet)

v-yadli··on Why I left Pine64
Well I think at this stage we can hardly call it a market -- it's not 10 different android distros that stem off from a solid codebase, but different groups of developers that interact with each other to bring up the base.

When you destroy the nest for these dev groups, there will be no more software for a fancy distro to package.

v-yadli··on Dashy – A self-hosted homepage for your homelab
I saw it on the awesome selfhost list, and Dashy seems cool and flexible.

To save one more click from the dashboard and allow desktop integration, I now use these:

- https://github.com/nativefier/nativefier - https://github.com/filips123/PWAsForFirefox

.. and wrap self-contained apps to be started from the Start Menu, xfce4-appfinder or (no self-contained apps AFAIK) the Android launcher

v-yadli··on Pipewire to replace Pulseaudion on Ubuntu 22.10
Different effect chains for different profiles -- plugged in = transparent signal path; crappy laptop speaker = booster fx.
v-yadli··on Why LSP?
Hmm maybe these:

- Programming based on fragments, not documents (e.g. LEO https://leoeditor.com/)

- Live programming (e.g. smalltalk environments)

- ... where certain actions are not available, e.g. a PL geared towards speech recognition may not support "hover"

But on the other hand, these are not well-aligned with current text editors (text based, has a cursor, organize info as documents etc.)

So languages are one side, editors are the other.

v-yadli··on Why LSP?
One particular problem of M+N is that it requires LSP to cover all the wanted features provided by server and supported by client.

This is not always the case for existing servers. Semantic highlighting wasn't in the protocol until 3.0 (iirc), and many servers have extra non-standard endpoints. So the real world situation is that there's a core feature set allowing M+N, and additionally, custom endpoints and features requiring MN.

Nevertheless the non-standard MN endpoints at least follow the "shape" of LSP -- same communication channel and message format, and that makes MN much easier than before already! As the core protocol evolves, more MN features will be decoupled to M+N.

v-yadli··on We decided to move 90% of our workload from the cloud to on-prem infrastructure
Yeah I think so. There might also be better converter modules. Anyway, my setup is caused by an oversight of not burying light pipes into the floor. Otherwise I guess I'll go with SFP+ too. I'm using TP-Link TL-ST1005 which is the cheapest 10GbE switch out there and it cost like $150. Also RJ-45 adapters/switches run anecdotally hotter than SFP+ ones.

Actually if you have cat5 or cat6 base-T setup, you can get second hand dual port 10gbe pcie cards for 30 dollars each(!)

10GbE baseT switches are more expensive than fiber equivalent though.

v-yadli··on The smallest and worst HDMI display
SSD1306 can definitely do better than 6-10fps, which is close to the "software mode" driven by GPIOs, not an actual I2C interface.

Either the DDC is running at very low speed, or... the I2C in HDMI in this laptop is actually a software thing?

v-yadli··on Start Self Hosting
Even better -- things like ONNX Runtime are intended to run everywhere, and take advantage of the cutting edge tensor processors (like the INT8 processors in latest ARM chips)
v-yadli··on Start Self Hosting
Very interesting project, and nice landing page! Will definitely check it out.

I'm a long time ownCloud/NextCloud user and I'm aware of the alternatives. With multiple android phones come and go in the past 8 years or so, the background upload seems to stand its ground.

The real problem here is iOS and its lack of proper background tasks. See: https://github.com/nextcloud/ios/issues/215 -- they tried every possible way to persuade iOS into running background sync, but still hit and miss.

I have to request access to my wife's iPhone and manually trigger some :)

One small suggestion here -- PhotoPrism went with `tensorflow.js` to load up classification models, and I recommend a "real" TF or PyTorch installation to properly leverage the computation resources. The difference is huge even running cpu-only because it's wasm vs. proper BLAS library.

I worked on a nodejs binding for native ONNX runtime (not publicly) so that's also a possible way out.

v-yadli··on Start Self Hosting
PhotoPrism[1]+NextCloud is a potential solution to the Picasa problem. I run them on my personal NAS.

The devops experience is fine -- I can wrap up PWAs for all the devices (PCs and phones) in the family. Need to set up a few systemd timers to synchronize data, build indices and check for PhotoPrism app updates but that's not too bad. Docker makes deployment super easy.

The user experience, hmm, modern, minimalism, tolerable.

Modern = it knows about iPhone live photos and all sorts of photo metadata; has machine learning for classification. Recognizes faces. etc.

Minimalism = just a viewer, no photo editing (Picasa photo editing and the ability to put an album together into one picture totally rocks)

Tolerable = meh classification precision, slow geotagged map (dreaming of Picasa + Google Earth), NextCloud iOS autoupload constantly breaks (you want non-iCloud cloud on iOS and you're not a megacorp huh? good luck) etc.

Conclusion? It has been a decade since Picasa is gone. I'd expect a lot more improvements to happen, but in reality, the best thing we have now is just that. Some good, some bad, some ugly.

v-yadli··on Zotero 6
Zotfile is an extension that automatically converts internally stored pdfs to links in a filesystem directory -- the latter can be synchronized and accessed however you please.

It's been working great for me, although recent versions have a problem that it no longer recognizes the root directory and pollutes the zotero database with machine-specific absolute paths ((
