uxp100··on I Bought a Tesla and the Previous Owner Has Been Remotely Controlling My Car
The fine article mentions the cost of the supercharger idle fees that the current owner used to get back at the previous owner, so it’s not that.

It also says that in order to remove the owner Tesla wanted registration, which can take a few weeks to get, not simply a bill of sale.

uxp100··on Long live American Science and Surplus
I have spent many afternoons going to Lost World of Wonders, American Science and Surplus, and the thrift next door is decent too. Maybe cap it off with mediocre tacos at Taqueria Buenavista, or go to West Allis Cheese and Sausage. Fun times in west Allis.

However, tbh, ASS isn’t that great. I wish it was better. Weirder. Larger. People have been posting about other stores such as Weird Stuff Warehouse in Sunnyvale, and tbh, that was way more interesting on the tech side. I’ve got some milsurp bags there I like, and occasionally an electronics part or two, but it’s just ok. I bought a pretty nice vacuum there once too. So I’ll miss it if it goes, but I kinda get why.

uxp100··on Trump administration halts Harvard's ability to enroll international students
Got it. Makes sense to me.
uxp100··on Trump administration halts Harvard's ability to enroll international students
Are suggesting that average Israelis do not support the pressure campaign against universities, even those who generally support Israel’s actions in Gaza? Seems plausible, I haven’t seen any polling about that.

If you are suggesting that Israeli politicians are not involved with American Israel supporters who are advocating a strict crackdown on speech at universities I don’t think that is plausible. We know there is communication between the military and some influential American Israel supporters.

uxp100··on A Typical Workday at a Japanese Hardware Tool Store [video]
I have distinct memories of my dad (a contractor/carpenter) buying his first cordless circular saw and returning it because it struggled with a 2x6, and a few days ago my friend was using a fairly inexpensive 20v cordless chainsaw to take down some trees. It’s wild.
uxp100··on A Typical Workday at a Japanese Hardware Tool Store [video]
They definitely vary, but I’ve never been to one that was particularly great tbh (always cheap, never a huge selection). But I was always looking more for building materials than tools, and unfortunately we had two great architectural salvage warehouses that closed recently, so I might have look a bit further afield for my next home projects.

The last day of most estate sales is when heavy discounts are available.
uxp100··on Reviving a modular cargo bike design from the 1930s
When I look up backfiet I see a typical cargo bike, what the article is discussing is a design where you directly drive the front wheel (with a 3 speed hub in this case). Seems worse, but nifty.
uxp100··on ALICE detects the conversion of lead into gold at the LHC
I actually can’t think of anything I’ve watched with that has exactly that plot, but I suspect the progenitor of that sort of Geomancy in anime is the novel series Teito Monogatari. (One or two adaptations were released in English under the name Doomed Megalopolis).

Just a tidbit.

uxp100··on Technical analysis of the Signal clone used by Trump officials
Honestly, I don’t think either is a true threat to the United States. I think that while Israel has been hugely influential the past 30 years, and had a close relationship longer on the intelligence front, that is far different than capture and occupation. Israel’s influence has been awful for the people of Iraq, Iran and Palestine, among others, but I don’t just disagree with the phrasing of occupation, I disagree with the premise. A significant part of why Israel gets so much of what it wants is because many of those in power in the US over the past 30 years like the role it plays in Middle East politics.

(I’ve been using 30 years due to feeling that HW Bush was stronger with Israel on the particular issue of Palestine, but really, not an expert here at all)

uxp100··on Technical analysis of the Signal clone used by Trump officials
> Israel’s grip on DC’s balls is far too strong

I more or less agree.

> We’re literally an occupied nation

The language of the US under occupation is a neonazi talking point, ZOG (Zionist Occupation Government) being a phrase neonazi morons like. Maybe a coincidence.

uxp100··on Ask HN: Did someone dig into the JFK files?
Jefferson Morley is a JFK conspiracy guy and I listened to a podcast where he discussed what was released and to badly summarize a conversation I listened to on a bike trainer a month ago: nothing really impactful regarding the assassination, but some interesting (shitty) details about the CIA. He has a newsletter you can look up that I’m sure goes into great detail.
uxp100··on DOGE Worker’s Code Supports NLRB Whistleblower
Yes, this is much more clear than the article.
uxp100··on Everyday life improvements since the 90s (2022)
People were definitely having play dates in the 90s…
uxp100··on Making Every Air Conditioner a 2-Way AC
It’s a very short summary of a podcast that you can hear without giving up your email. So I’d just do that instead. Seems like it might interesting, but this article wasn’t.
uxp100··on Middle-aged man trading cards go viral in rural Japan town
I don’t think “middle-aged” is quite the right translation.
uxp100··on The average college student today
I can’t find the exact citation at the moment, but I believe that American students were described as viewing the education process as transactional in a wider sense by Max Weber in 1905 (Protestant ethic and the spirit of capitalism I think?)
uxp100··on SoftBank Group to Acquire Ampere Computing for 6.5B
Yes, Ethnically Korean, his grandparents were immigrants. As for cultural differences, I think you could credit his extensive time spent living in the US as much as the immigrant Korean culture.
uxp100··on US Ends Support For Ukrainian F-16s
Once they hold national office they become favorable to it.
uxp100··on Schools reviving shop class
That was my experience as well. OTOH I don’t think ethics classes will magically make the students “more ethical” or something. Might as well let students have a choice of philosophy electives if possible, I don’t think making everyone take ethics is better than making everyone take aesthetics.

Although if you were going to have something more concrete, like Engineering Ethics except somehow for high schoolers without a particular career chosen, a few weeks of philosophy would probably be good background.

uxp100··on Dust from car brakes more harmful than exhaust, study finds
Unfortunately Nissan did not put such a tire on my Ariya. Good range and very quiet but very soft and only 9/32 from factory means lots of people have to replace em after 15 to 20k.

I’m replacing earlier given poor snow and rain performance. They can have em back when my lease is up.

uxp100··on Dust from car brakes more harmful than exhaust, study finds
That’s a factor too. My stock tires were quite soft, though they were a tire that was also used on non EVs in Nissans lineup.
uxp100··on Dust from car brakes more harmful than exhaust, study finds
The weights aren’t really that much higher than ICE cars, but I don’t think anyone who has owned an EV would say they don’t go through tires faster. They do. How much due to weight, how much due to better acceleration, I don’t know, but they definitely are harder on tires.
uxp100··on Nvidia Security Team: “What if we just stopped using C?” (2022)
Significant bits of code at NVIDIA use SPARK. Small percentage of total code written, but in significant places.
uxp100··on How Nissan and Honda's $60B merger talks collapsed
The leaf and the Qashqi are pretty similar.
uxp100··on Balcony solar is taking off
To do exactly what they’re doing in Germany would be illegal, or perhaps merely would make your utility very mad. It’s something like an 800w inverter that plugs into a wall socket. One issue for the US is that you don’t have access to both hots on one plug in a typical receptacle. Not a dealbreaker but one of many reasons you shouldn't import a German one and try and modify it for US use.
uxp100··on The Recombobulation Area (2023)
Yes. Renaissance had a huge store (over a million volumes across 4 stories) downtown for years that was pretty sketchy, with bookshelves full of copies of the NEC from the 70s collapsed into the aisles, just laying in piles, and hundreds of copies of titles assigned to high schoolers boxed up on their upper stories. Really sort of a warehouse for their tidy airport location. They now have a small second location in Southridge mall, which is a appealingly dingy. Their downtown competitor, downtown books, which was less of a dump downsized about 10 years ago to a single story from 3 stories but is still downtown in a different location.
uxp100··on U.S. facing most intense flu season in at least 15 years
Just anecdotally, my family and some friends both got pretty bad flus this January. I mean, not sure it was flu, wasn’t covid, but mild to moderate respiratory symptoms with lots of fatigue, coughing and sneezing for like 2 and a half weeks. No fever.
uxp100··on Avoiding outrage fatigue while staying informed
And the Editor in Chief is Jeffery Goldberg, of Iraq WMD conspiracy theory fame. I’m not saying they don’t publish good pieces, but seriously, talk about not a reliable source.
uxp100··on Why is Warner Bros. Discovery putting old movies on YouTube?
There are a few horror and sci fi movies with similar themes to Society that all came out around the same time. Society is probably the wildest. Worth a watch.
