utopkara··on Ask HN: Is Knuth's TAOCP worth the time and effort?
Some people read it cover to cover, and the few I know also happen to be the best computer scientists I know of. It is hard to come by a comparable compilation of best algorithms in one place, so I occasionally have to refer to it. I wouldn't think of reading all of it, because I don't think I have the time, but it is a page turner if you are into algorithms.
utopkara··on Fast String Matching for Analytics Pipelines
The difference between a DAWG and the minimized deterministic dictionary automaton is the way they are constructed. Otherwise, the resulting automata should be very similar in size, and of course their running times will be the same. Note that, we build the automata offline.

The main advantage of using general purpose automata becomes clear when we are able to reuse the codebase and the pipelines we built for a dictionary automaton to both build and execute a search automaton. Otherwise, a generalized suffix tree would have done the job at least as well.

In addition, when we have general purpose automata combined with a powerful tool like OpenFST, we can compose the automata with transducers, and the resulting automata will transform the input strings as we are matching them.

utopkara··on Ask HN: How do I secure a personal journal?
It uses AES-256.
utopkara··on Ask HN: How do I secure a personal journal?
I use macjournal. It is worth every penny.

As George Costanza said, "it's not a lie if you believe it".

utopkara··on Kickstarter switches to Stripe
I was going to support the new 3doodler project after their launch email calling in for support, and then I saw that I needed my credit card at the payment step. I figured, they could reach their goal without me anyway...
utopkara··on Pax Mongolica
Yes, and Marco Polo is a captivating series.
utopkara··on Why haven't quadcopters been scaled up yet?
It must be the costs... Multirotors have enjoyed open source development by enthusiasts so far, and they built heavily on the experience of the RC enthusiasts, and they repurposed tons of hardware that is suitable for small applications. A few thousand dollars is within the budget of many developers, so the small UAV improvements could proceed very much like software-based innovation curve does. But, any size/budget/project bigger than that is bound by a different progress curve. I bet it can be done, and if it is practical, it will be done too. Aerospace engineers were always a very innovative bunch; check out autogyro (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autogyro).
utopkara··on IRIS+
Have you inspected the issue? One issue that makes me worry is the battery connections. These drones have a lot of vibration once they are in the air, and you need to check the battery wires before/after each recharge to make sure they solder is not broken etc.
utopkara··on Microsoft to Close Microsoft Research Lab in Silicon Valley
This article(http://blogs.seattletimes.com/microsoftpri0/2014/09/18/micro...) has details on the numbers. The lab has 75 researchers.
utopkara··on Playboy Interview: Steve Jobs (1985)
It is a great observation. I wonder if it is true though. We have seen Apple obsess over Google's competition in mobile as they were rising this time.
utopkara··on How I built an audio book reader for my nearly blind grandfather
OSX (and iOS) has great text to speech functionality with some quality voices. It is probably not of everybody, but for people who can use a laptop (or iPad) there is a lot of accessibility potential. I use the Ava speaker for reading long articles in the background while I do other things, and the voice is almost as good as a radio host.

utopkara··on How To Make 1 to 30,000 Virtual Reality Cardboard Headsets an Hour
It is cool that somebody is doing this. I wouldn't mind cutting and making one for my own as a weekend project though. The lenses cost $3-$4, you can get them from your local toy store packaged inside toy binoculars.
utopkara··on Google Cardboard
There are many varieties of OpenDive in Thingiverse . I am glad there is a chance that this might become a commonly used interface. Looking forward to using libraries that support displaying on it.

utopkara··on Google Invests $50M in “Made With Code” Program to Get Girls Excited About CS
Disgusting title! An exhibit to why the program is needed. It is not for getting girls excited, it is for getting idiots like the reporter (Jordan Crook) understand that coding is not a men's thing.
utopkara··on The most fuel efficient car ever built: 2072 miles with 1 liter of fuel
There are more than ten contestants who beat 1000 km/l. That's a lot of contestants ignored by an article about a research contest.

Without getting into a long argument about how science and collaboration works, narrow sighted articles that cover events like this do a lot of damage.

utopkara··on Google Loon balloon crashes near Yakima
Keep in mind that balloons are much cheaper than planes to build and operate. Worse yet, the populated areas on earth are only a fraction of the whole surface area. Expect balloons to make dense clusters rather than evenly distributed over the sky. Needless to say, there will be more flights to more populated areas as well. Increasing the likelihood of collision to a level that the pilots will need to constantly monitor the skies will increase fatigue and cause indirect problems. The cost of all this will be felt by the aviation industry, and will be passed on to us.
utopkara··on Google Loon balloon crashes near Yakima
Indeed they are launched all the time. But, we are talking about the case that the practice becomes popular and the skies become a dense minefield.
utopkara··on Parrot Bebop
Check out the fpvcentral shopping list http://fpvcentral.net/2013/03/high-performance-quadcopter-fo...

They don't add the transmitter and batteries though, which would bring the price easily to $200. But, it is doable.

utopkara··on Pre-dating Soylent by over 20 years: The Ultimate Meal
The website and product packaging is definitely more recent. They have reference to GMO and stevia.
utopkara··on Pre-dating Soylent by over 20 years: The Ultimate Meal
I don't mind having a banana or an apple with meals. As a matter of fact, I bet many people will prefer that to give taste to soylent.
utopkara··on The new VirginAmerica.com
I should have clarified what I meant by "sites like this". I was referring to sites which have multiple pages that are presented as a scrollable single page. Without a way to jump pages at proper page boundaries it becomes a pain to read through them. I still hope that this becomes the norm for scrolling through sites like this one.
utopkara··on The new VirginAmerica.com
Best scrolling experience I've seen in sites like this. It might not be right for all sites, but I would like to see it almost everywhere from now on.
utopkara··on Pearls Before Breakfast (2007)
Great point. When I was rushing through Grand Central trying to get done with my commute, I hardly paid attention to any action that would otherwise be super interesting to watch/listen to. Now, GC has a huge tourist crowd throughout the day especially this time of the year. If you do this experiment in GC now, I am pretty sure you'd attract a huge tourist crowd, and get the commuters mad too, because you'd be blocking their way.
utopkara··on Mellow, the robotic sous-chef
Great looking web site. Perfectly in tune with the product; at least that was my impression. I wish I could eat it.
utopkara··on DeepBeliefSDK: image recognition framework for iOS
No source. I am glad you have a great looking product.
utopkara··on Show HN: HTML5 clone of OS X AirDrop – Easy P2P file transfers in a browser
Noob question: It seems like websockets is more appropriate for sending files to peers, why would they go for webrtc?
utopkara··on Nanobar.js – Lightweight progress bars
But, this one is nano size :-) I haven't seen how mobile browsers handle the progress element, but this visual is very well suited for showing background activity progress in mobile.
