utku_karatas2··on VLC contributor living in Aleppo writing about the Paris attacks
> It's my sincerest hope that French troops will be deployed to Syria in the near future

This kind of thinking is exactly why Mid-east is in its current state and that is exactly the reason why ISIS was born.

ISIS high command mainly consists of Iraqi ex-officers, who were rendered jobless and aimless by USA's 'liberation' attempt. Al-Qaida was a result of a 'liberation' attempt by Soviets and then consequently another 'liberation' attempt by USA. Guess how the French 'liberation' will result at the end.

utku_karatas2··on Paris Shootings and Explosions Kill Over 100, Police Say
Not to sound condescending, but if you're remotely interested about mid-east politics it is pretty easy to see what tonight was about. It is about Syria.

Pretty much all the world powers have vested interests in Syria. Russia has started to intervene in Syria very recently. NATO is there from the beginning. There is Iran, Turkey, Saudis, Israel, you name it.

There was supposed to be a G20 event tomorrow (will probably get postponed) and the hot topic was supposed to be Syria. What happened a few hours ago is just diplomacy played with blood.

utku_karatas2··on Why ‘Mom’ and ‘Dad’ Sound So Similar in So Many Languages
You'd be surprised how similar Turkish and Korean actually is. Both coming from Altaic language group the grammatical structure is very similar. It blew my mind when I first learned about that. Take a look at this...

  yap-mak == ka-da
  yap-ma == ka-jima
  yap-ma-yin == ka-jima-yo
They even have the same kinship rules as us (Abi, Abla, etc.). The more I'm digging in Korean culture the more similarities I'm finding during my short stay here.
utku_karatas2··on “It’s done, there is no way back. We tried, we failed”
Because failure stories tend to be more sincere and heartfelt than the success stories. It provokes the readers' emotions.

Success stories usually won't include any dirty details, any shabby deals or the full naked truth of the events that underwent. No A-list actor will talk about the producer dick he sucked. You have a reputation to maintain after a success.

In a failure on the other hand, you probably are at the rock bottom, have nothing to lose, no one to be afraid of.

utku_karatas2··on Sprite: a different drone
You're not alone. Actually every time I see similar products out there I see flying death but this one specifically looks like it could drop a bite-sized doom on me. :)

The fast pace of development and availability of these kind of flying machinery is bound to create security implications sooner or later. These things would be great for assassinations or with a fleet of them you can absolutely terrorize the hell of a sizable area.

utku_karatas2··on My Adventures with “4K” 2160p and Linux
Aaaand this is why I switched to first a tiling WM, and then to OSX for its intuitive 4 finger swipe workspaces.

Till that switch I was a multi monitor junkie, but after 3 monitors it starts getting bad for your neck, bad for your eyes (with all those monitor backlights burning your retinas) and you also need humongous desk setups.

Nowadays it's just one big monitor and 4 finger swipes.

utku_karatas2··on The Last PC Laptop
Can I ask if you can plug in 2 external displays to your X1 on Ubuntu? (my latest Thinkpad did not allow that and I had to switch to something else because it's kind of a show-stopper for me.)
utku_karatas2··on Nokia Reportedly Selling Off Qt
Embarc.. (oh, whoever owns Delphi right now, hard to even spell) who's been struggling for multiplatform solutions for some time.

Though I'd not bet on it. Their management seems to have made all the wrong decisions in product development in the last 10+ years and has ridden Delphi, a platform which was always way ahead of its time, into irrelevance.

utku_karatas2··on Brackets: The Open Source Code Editor for the Web
I suppose we'll be seeing more Codemirror based editors wrapped in Webkit in the future. Well at least one more I'm sure, because I've been implementing one too. You couldn't believe how fast one can actually churn a cross platform mediocrish editor given all the great quality tooling (QTWebkit, Bootstrap, Codemirror).
utku_karatas2··on Because Everyone (Still) Needs a Router
Wait a minute. Is it the CPU and memory factor on the router that causes the "internet is slow, somebody close your torrents" nuisance? I always thought it was the bandwidth getting choked. Could someone expand on this topic?
utku_karatas2··on AngularJS 1.0 released
> I read Backbone's documentation and to me is a mess of heavy JS programming to achieve something that I don't know what it is.

That got me thinking.. Could I ever explain a non-web developer what Backbone is in a succinct way? I'm gonna try..

Web development is basically storing data at the server side, modifying and handling that data on both the server side and the client side. So basically you got multiple representations of the very same thing on two very different mediums. Passing and modifying that representation back and forth between those two very different mediums can be very tricky and error prone by itself, let alone the situation that you're handling varying numbers and varying types of these representations. Now what these MVC frameworks give us are idiomatic methods and structures attacking this very problem of representational hell.

utku_karatas2··on Turkey charges pianist Fazil Say over Twitter posts
> How do you prevent descent from democracy to a repressive society, when the people vote against the rule of law?

There is no such descent I think, it is just that the new ruling classes of the country is more religiously conservative than their predecessors. The old ruling classes were actually more conservative but in racism, totalitarianism and militarism.

> Atatürk tried very hard to pull Turkey out of the Middle Ages.

This is a very common misconception. Modernization of the Empire/Turkey had begun long before Ataturk was even born. He is an important figure in Turkish history for sure but you can't attribute the progress of a whole nation to him.

utku_karatas2··on Turkey charges pianist Fazil Say over Twitter posts
The "silenced opposition" in Turkey is barely different from a terrorist organization. And most of that opposition is somehow soldiers. High Officers with great clout in the army and we're talking about an army with a habit of coup d'etats every 10 year.
utku_karatas2··on Turkey charges pianist Fazil Say over Twitter posts
Flagged. Every country has its own laws. News at Eleven.

This guy always had provocative speeches just for the sake of being provocative and the center of attention. More debatable and provocative stuff is circulated by columnists in everyday papers. It's just this guy is a little bit more prolific and annoying. Probably some district prosecutor just took a jab.

Also don't forget to turn on the "lynx like navigation" option. This lets you navigate all the way through arrow keys (no need to use Enter).
utku_karatas2··on Mubarak says that he will not be leaving office
What about Turkey? He is going through an era of political and economical stability unseen since his inception 80 years ago.
utku_karatas2··on Ruby is beautiful (but I'm moving to Python)
Maybe it's me but I find those underscore methods very helpful while skimming code.. They clearly point out the "magic functionality - probably adding syntactic sugar" declarations, helping me focus to the actual interface of the class.
utku_karatas2··on WikiLeaks Archive — Cables Uncloak U.S. Diplomacy
Very true. Only a tiny fraction of the leaks are published as of writing this and yet the information leaked so far is enough to put my country - Turkey - in political turmoil for months.

utku_karatas2··on A zombie keyboard, an app-store rejection, a call from Steve Jobs
This also works for Jobs. By doing so, he keeps his executives on the hop, adds to his personal brand/legend, sends a clear message to those rumoring about his health status and to the developer base that has been complaining for some time.

utku_karatas2··on How to write a dev job post that inspires people and doesn't suck
Good luck finding such a teammate and making that guy work on a web based dental software.

Sigh. Posts like this slap me in the face that maybe we're in the wrong part of the world to do software business. Here's our list of interview questions for a web developer position we couldn't fill for the last 2 months.

  1. What is Javascript and why is it needed?
  2. Could you talk about HTTP GET and POST.
  3. What is OO? Have you "heard of" design patterns? (Most haven't even heard patterns at all.)
  4. Could you talk about any other languages than you currently use? (mostly ASP.NET and PHP)
We have seen very few applicants fulfilling us beyond the second question. And the ones that do cost an arm and leg. This happens in Istanbul, a city of ~15 million.

utku_karatas2··on Alleged Assassins Caught on Dubai Surveillance Tape
Somehow "Dubai security services" sounds like a joke instead of a beacon of Arabic intelligence to this mid-eastern ears of mine. Thus I think this whole thing ended up as a Best of Mossad episode.
utku_karatas2··on Alleged Assassins Caught on Dubai Surveillance Tape
I cannot make myself believe world's and especially mid-east's most feared inteligence service making mistakes in this level (Security cams ha? Who knew!). This case is more like a message telling "we come, we find, we kill your leader wherever he is and btw don't forget to comment us on Youtube". That's why I called it a stunt.
