username111··on Ask HN: Take over abandoned GitHub repo
If you don't get a response definitely fork and rename.
username111··on Arch Linux: MariaDB replaces MySQL in repositories
Debian stable: Probably not for a while.

Ubuntu and Debian testing and up maybe sooner.

username111··on Ask HN: What's the best way to introduce my Grampa to the internet?
Find a forum with his interests and use that to introduce him to the web.

You can teach him the basics of how to get there walk him through creating an account and making a post (most of these forums have an introduction section).

username111··on Digg banned from Google?
Because it isn't proper etiquette, it is their content and they should get the views for it.

Some people may not be able to handle it and caches are always nice but pageviews are also a nice thing when you run a website even if they don't generate any revenue.

username111··on Two Months of Soylent
Have you tried just the fizzy flavored water you can buy at the grocery store? The taste takes some getting used to (not really sweet when compared to cokes) but I've found that what I liked most about soda is the fizz.

After dropping soda I can't even drink half a can because of the sweetness but YMMV.

username111··on Ask HN: How can I get my team to adopt SCM?
The number one perk for version control is... version control, there are always mistakes made or some fix that ends up breaking everything and if you don't have version control this becomes a giant pain in the ass but with it you just switch to or look at an older version and problem solved.

The added team working enhancements are always secondary to version control and if someone can't see the benefit of this it is going to be hard to argue.

username111··on Bills seek end to farm animal abuse videos
There is a huge difference between clean kill slaughter and animal abuse then slaughter if we are going to agree that animals can feel (which they most certainly can).
username111··on Getting Started with Python for Data Scientists
Here you go:

    $ python --version
    Python 2.7.3 :: Anaconda 1.4.0 (64-bit)
It installs to a directory so you basically just add it to your path to get it working it doesn't change anything else on your install.

Beware though that you don't use virtualenvs with it but you use their tool conda to create your environments

username111··on Bill Gates: Capitalism means male baldness gets more funding than malaria
Some truth rings through the satire, like the television that appeals to the masses.

Except instead of Ow my balls we have reality tv (though wipeout is pretty close to the former).

There are plenty of stupid things in the movie but that doesn't mean the social commentary isn't without insight.

username111··on Ads/ Promoted posts on HN front page?
The job postings used to have upvotes in the same way that articles did is probably why the OP is questioning this.
username111··on Linode Nextgen: The Network
Except now rackspace is even more expensive than linode for certain uses as the 2TB of bandwidth free would cost you an extra $240 on rackspace cloud and because bandwidth is shared between all linodes this extra bandwidth can make a big difference.
username111··on Ask HN: What could possibly be wrong with SimCity?
Maybe they had a budget set for servers then now that that budget wasn't enough they are running through the hoops to get that budget increased and trying to work with what they have in the mean time.

That or they don't have an easy way to add more hardware to the mix and they weren't set to scale like you said.

username111··on Bad sleep 'dramatically' alters body
Well that is a time where a lot of people lose their hair color.
username111··on Spotify vs Rdio
It uses less than legal methods for obtaining music and doesn't work on iphone (without jailbreak).
username111··on Spotify vs Rdio
I use rdio over spotify for one reason: music discovery.

It is much easier to find new releases and new artists on radio because they have a large dedicated new releases section which is updated weekly and ranked by popularity.

The radio option isn't something I use much but I find rdio works okay and spotify only works well for very popular music and bases itself completely off of artists so if you get some slow songs from rather not slow artists and start a radio you won't get any better an experience than rdio.

Rdio search also is much much faster on my phone than spotify which tends to hang forever.

I switch back and forth every few months to see if spotify has improved but it seems that rdio improves at a rate of 10x more than spotify because in the month that I try spotify rdio has already updated apps and web player to something that works better (see the ability to control rdio from any rdio app to the one that is playing).

username111··on Ask HN: Any recommendations for Latin American VPS providers?
It seems that I/O differs on which type you buy: http://aws.amazon.com/ec2/instance-types/

Maybe you would have better luck finding a dedicated server/servers in Brazil.
