user____name··on True Rate of Unemployment
Meanwhile my country has tons of vacant housing and prices keep going up.
user____name··on A Beautiful Theory Falls to Ugly Data
A common misunderstanding, this. Economists in theory don’t focus on starting with the right set of assumptions, like any gentleman they instead focus on starting with the right set of conclusions. They then, in theory, argue passive-aggressively over why their model is The Right One using increasingly obtuse game theoretic models, usually with a drawing of two lines intersecting. The rest of the world? We simply shrug and ignore them.

Much like the the people ignored the idiot savants tucked away in medieval monasteries. At some point they become useful, like when the king needs to know what the nature of God is, who It approves and why it’s him and not the other guy.

Now that we've traded our warrior nobility for economic nobility, the neurodivergent and mildly touched ones are tucked away in academia instead. Pleasantly seperated from their subject of study. To figure out the nature of "The Market", and why it is, in theory, as Rational and Self Organizing as a medieval Thomist Universe.

And we are like the medieval peasantry who cannot understand an iota of what they're scribbling in their intimidating books. But we can see they're still fighting over It, just like they fought over resolving the philosophic contradictions of the faith.

It makes one wonder: what shape and mission will They have next? Will it be in explaining the actions of some sentient supercomputer, which both feeds and spanks us? Or which irradiated plants will take us beyond the Seventh Sphere, in theory? More at eight.

It’s ActiveX all over again.
user____name··on I hated writing until I learned there’s a science to it (2024)
I found writing techniques employed by fiction writers to be surpisingly relevant for nonfiction.
user____name··on Why Japanese companies do so many different things
The US under trillionare leadership, certainly.
user____name··on Why Japanese companies do so many different things
Is it propaganda though? Japan is more aligned with ‘the west’ not only in geopolitics but in the system of governance that was imposed upon it by via USA occuptation. Whereas China has a very different political system that is generally poorly understood and distrusted. Regardless, I don’t know where you’re from, but I see plenty of idolizing of China and how it manages to solve big problems at speeds unseen outside of mobilization in other parts of the globe. China-studies are a big thing at the moment. The positive view of Japan probably flows from its postwar boom years and popculture exports. China is at the moment being viewed with suspicion over its military buildup near Taiwan and creeping authoritarianism under Xi. This could all change again in the future depending on the actions China will take.
user____name··on Talking to strangers at the gym
I start asking (annoying) legal and technical questions if they start with that first name basis crap, usually enough to make them back off.
user____name··on Talking to strangers at the gym
The author is a fascinating figure. Changed his last name from Carnagey to Carnagie for PR benefits and was a lifelong people pleaser. Keep that last thing in mind while you read.
user____name··on 'Staggering' number of people believe unproven claims about vaccines, raw milk
Perhaps it’s naive but I really think that teaching critical thinking patterns to young teens can help. Just telling “don’t believe everything you read” can cut both ways.
user____name··on Iran demands Bitcoin fees for ships passing Hormuz during ceasefire
Should just pay in pure cocaine, cut out the crypto middlemen.
user____name··on LÖVE: 2D Game Framework for Lua
Someone should make a framework like this but with static typing and manual memory management. If you want a modable game you really need to have it in a managed language, and I spent enough time fighting with garbage collectors that it's just a non-starter. A shame because Love is really nice to use.
user____name··on Microsoft hasn't had a coherent GUI strategy since Petzold
Sure, but how much of that had to do with the design and implementation of Windows? You know, the OS that runs half of the modern economy. Microsoft is just milking it without a coherent vision.
user____name··on A second Starlink satellite exploded in orbit

Big tech Arpanet and CERN are full of it!
user____name··on You Do Not, in Fact, Have to Hand It to Them
This article is so out of touch. The AI boom is great because it makes the line go up. I mean imagine these frivolities like affordable shelter and forty hour work weeks being some kind of birthright. You don't want to work anymore and we say fine and then we give you a digital pacifier but you're still whining, like these stocks are going to prop themselves.
user____name··on I Built an Open-World Engine for the N64 [video]
This is really cool. Kaze Emanuar[0] seems to be able to hit 60hz consistently with his Mario 64 rework, I wonder if such perf is achievable for these wide open landscapes. Iirc Shadow of the Collosus rendered distant geometry into the skybox, which always struck me as a neat trick.

user____name··on Windows native app development is a mess
I feel like I'm the only person in the world who would rather write ugly win32 jank for the rest of my days than ever having to touch an "elegant" or "well structured" Cocoa codebase. In win32 if you want a button you call a function and pass a hande, in the Apple world you first subclass 7 interfaces in some unreadable Smalltalk-wannabe syntax and pray you don't need to access the documentation. And of course they constantly change things because breaking backwards compatibility is Apple's kink.

user____name··on White House plan to break up iconic U.S. climate lab moves forward
The best politicians understand the value of being perceived as authentic. Pushing the VP at the last minute and pretending nothing was wrong just felt incredibly stilted and insincere. Politicians like Trump are popular because they "tell it like it is" and not the media trained evasive responses you typically get from politicians.

I would have voted for a partially sentient dung heap over Trump, which at the current rate is probably in the cards as a next GOP candidate.

user____name··on White House plan to break up iconic U.S. climate lab moves forward
Those points could apply to all and every political situations everywhere.

user____name··on AI Made Writing Code Easier. It Made Being an Engineer Harder
> Burnout was reported by 62 percent of associates and 61 percent of entry-level workers. Among C-suite leaders? Just 38 percent.

That can't be right?

user____name··on IDF killed Gaza aid workers at point blank range in 2025 massacre: Report
This is a common excuse, but The Truth is Israel doesn't care they're housing anything in the basement, they'll bomb it anyway. The ethnic cleansing agenda is plainly obvious at this point. In fact they seem to prefer having Hamas in predictable places, easier to take out and a convenient excuse to cull a few hundred of a superfluous population -- the Palestinian birth rate is way above that of Israelis. The operational reality is that Hamas is simply the best advertisement for the political hacks in charge of Israel, the system perpetuates itself because the current situation provides leverage for both ruling parties. And it turns out when you have two antagonistic death cults, people die. Solution: don't get born a Palestinian in Israel? Depressing.
