As is cloudfare. I have lost count of sites that pirate our software that are using cloudfare.

Cloudfare know of the problem and refuse to do anything about it.

user_0001··on Legalize It All
Might get a criminal record. Not a certain.

But it is not ideal granted. But compared to how it appears to be in the US. Coerced into being an informer, mandatory minimums etc - it isn't so bad

user_0001··on Legalize It All
true, but on the other hand you can get caught with 1-2 grams of any powder, less than an oz of cannabis and nothing will come of it.

Anything you can argue in court is personal (which is quite a lot) and at worst you are looking at a few hours of community service in most cases.

user_0001··on Why Dopamine Makes People More Impulsive
yes. Not being able to focus on things you are not interested in was coined "adhd" and some big companies made a lot of money off of it.
user_0001··on Why killer whales should not be kept in captivity
The other side? That good money can be made by keeping animals in substandard conditions for their complete well being (mental and physical)?

user_0001··on Painkillers now kill more Americans than any illegal drug
I probably should have read the article

------- Since the 1990s, doctors have been under more and more pressure to treat pain as a serious medical issue. Pharmaceutical companies took advantage of this desire, marketing opioid painkillers like OxyContin and Vicodin as a safe, effective solution to pain. ------

privatised health care and the profit incentive to prescribe high cost pain kills. I believe the Drs get a kickback from the companies for pushing a particular brand (could be wrong on that though).

Also, who put the pressure on the Drs to treat pain as such? Politicians? Why would they? I imagine leant on (or the term is "lobbied" by big pharma. Would be interesting to see the "donations"* paid to politicans from big pharma right around that time and who profited from this.

* I always find this funny who we in the west call this "donations" but when reporting on third world countries it is termed a "bribed". Paying money to get what you want from government so you can make more money....

user_0001··on Painkillers now kill more Americans than any illegal drug
What are the rates like compared to other countries?

Does the US just over prescribe painkillers, meaning more flood to the blackmarket?

Is it people are getting it from the Dr and accidentally ODing?

Are the Drs prescribing without care, so those who want the drug for a high and no medical reason can?

I never knew painkillers to be used as party drug / fun drug in the UK (outside of the heroin using demographic) nor ever heard of some one ODing on prescribed painkillers.

Seems strange it is such a big issue in the US

>in which freedoms reign.

Really? Looking beyond what is drilled in to the population from birth and the US is very rule bound in my experience compared to Europe. Whilst over there I got ticketed for parking at the wrong angle, crossing the road in the wrong place. Granted not a rule, but got questions by police for walking and many other situations I forget.

Perhaps European countries have this many rules / laws but I have never experienced them being enforced

In a perfect world it wouldn't be, because it wouldn't make a difference.

Although things are better these days than there were, there is not complete equality - and I am not speaking legally.

There is no need to "come out" to your friends and family that you are straight and like girls (if you are male and vice versa).

Until there is no bigotry, until there is literally no difference in what sex you prefer, then something like this will have an effect on your life, thus it may have played a part in Tim's view regarding his current position.

user_0001··on This is the most depressing chart in the world
infinite growth with finite resources is obviously a dumb plan. I think the problem with the graph is not that growth will slow down, but catastrophically crash with total devastation upon our species.

When with a bit of planning and foresight it could all be avoided.

Is a shame

user_0001··on Testing Rails applications in the life of a freelancer
exactly and as a freelancer working on projects that may / may not succeed to that point, most tests are not required. Unless the projects specifically asks for them, that the client foresees a future for the project and if it is successful would appreciate the tests and thus will pay more for them.

At the end of the day, as a freelancer, in two years time IF the project takes off, chances are you are not working on it

user_0001··on Testing Rails applications in the life of a freelancer
Or skip the test and just think about it before. We do not need to be "tricked" into thinking about / creating better designs
user_0001··on Testing Rails applications in the life of a freelancer
The majority of unit testing is dumb in my opinion for a freelancer / single dev project.

It just is not needed and waste of time.

Worse than that, the majority of tests I have seen become a hindrance later on. Granted, if you are one of those who can write quality code with quality tests it isn't (but you're not, most are not, chances are you are not - even if you think you are, probably you're not).

Please rewrite it. Maybe hide the menu under some icon I don't understand is the menu. Override the scroll so it jars. Probably a good idea to show a blank page, until I click through to allow about 4-5 external scripts before I can see any text, another 2 scripts to show images, and whilst we are at it, make sure I cannot click any links without allowing another script.

At the moment, the site is too easy to navigate, the text too easy to read. Maybe use more images, big images, a 2mb+ background gif would be good. Oh, I forgot external scripts, throw some of those in, my laptop fan isn't whirring so it is underused.

yes, what a terrible website, please "improve" it

There goes a wasted work hour reading your blog and remembering our overland road trip from UK to South America in an old VW Westfalia.

user_0001··on Judge tosses proposed class action accusing Google of CAPTCHA fraud
anti captcha (against recaptcha) works via captcha farms, the biggest being deathbycaptcha.com. $10 gets you about 10k solved captchas.

They work quite well. I tend to get about a 1 out of 5 correct of the squiggly words, whereas the service is more like 4/5

I am not aware of any successful dictionary attack on recaptcha. And the only OCR techniques to bypass recaptcha was by xrumer[0] but that was a few years ago

[0]xrumer: once popular forum spamming software waned in popularity / effectiveness in recent years

Agreed. Have visited both and driven all over India and across southern / SE China.

China is cleaner, more developed, more organised, things work, better roads / facilities and generally less chaotic with less signs of extreme poverty.

user_0001··on Ketamine’s effect bolsters a new theory of mental illness
Am not sure what part of your post contradicts what I wrote.

>In some cases, chronic ketamine use has been associated >In several reported severe cases

Chronic / addiction levels yes. Not recreational levels. As I put

As to ketamine and bladder problems. I used to be involved with the UK free party scene which had serious problems with ketamine in the early 2000s ( up until the supply shortage caused by the Indian clampdown a few years ago), before it was well known about the addiction / health problems it could cause (although issues were known, but it wasn't generally well known beyond a few knowledgeable people).

You would often hear that ketamine had no comedown, had no side effects. Users would start out being weekend users, then progress to daily, sniffing between 3-7 grams a day, all day - everyday. Then gradually you started hearing about stomach cramps, difficulty going to the toilet, thinking you had to go to the toilet every 10 minutes, having to urinate a jelly/jello like bloody substance. Drs had no idea what was going on and were no help. But by this stage the addiction had them completely and the only way to stop the pain was to sniff more ketamine. Eventually it led to a girl having kidneys and / or bladder removed and slowly the public conscience about the dangers of ketamine was known.

However, of all the users I knew who kept it to only weekends, used ketamine for years with none of the above mentioned health problems. Anecdotally of course and I am sure there may be edge cases I am unaware of. But recreational use of ketamine does not cause bladder problems IME
