I use the leechblock plugin and have it redirect any site like twitter/reddit/hn to my todo list instead. I also have it setup so I can only view hackernews on Fridays so I'm not constantly loading it.

I also subscribe to https://hackernewsletter.com/ which is a list of all the interesting articles from hacker news from that week. (it comes out on Friday, thus I unblock on the site on my computer on Fridays)

To be honest, I loaded the page, saw "what books Trump reads" and gave up on the site right there.

a billion bits is only like 130Meg a day, seems like google is doing pretty good.

The main reason books are better is because they are harder to write and produce. The person making the book actually has to invest a lot of their time in making it happen, unlike a blog post.

I've seen lots of articles on hacker news (and other places) that is "PART 1 of..." which does the introduction to what they plan on teaching, and then it just dies right there in the land of "PART 1's"

With a book, if you stop at part 1, no one is going to publish your book.

Another thing about books/web, is books go MUCH deeper into topics. It seems like 99% of the content on the web is "INTRO to xyz" but never "Advanced xyz"

Books are also broken into logical section so you have a learning path you can progress through; not just random content that you are to piece together yourself.

So, yes, very good advice; if you want to learn something, read the book.

not to be nitpicky, but I was looking more for people that make physical things.

Anti-vaxers find not getting vaccinations useful, how does that work for the rest of society when they start getting other people sick, and bring back things that were once eradicated.

A lot of people find not living in reality useful, AND they are still allowed to vote; how is that working out for the rest of society.

Until we have a better system for running countries that doesn't allow crazy and uninformed people to vote, maybe getting rid of some the sources of crazy information can at least help.

Firefox containers are amazing! Being able to have a work set of tabs that open all the google services correctly, and a set of personal tabs that open google services correctly is the best thing ever. Not to mention containing all the sites that try to track you into their own little playground.

A killer feature on Hackernews would be the ability to just point to a common thread like wiki that people could update; so we don't have to scroll through the comments on how people love DDG, but it just doesn't have good results. So instead of every post having a huge comment section on this restating the entire thing over and over and over, we could just link to the wiki that has the discussion on duck duck go.

I stopped reading because I can't take articles full of gifs seriously; just content farm crap.

I think the final thing was on the daily challenges; I always tried to solve them before looking at the answers even If I don't know the "proper" math to do so. I had posted my (correct) solution that I got to by writing a program to work it out; and I got some replies saying I was an idiot for not doing in the proper (math) way.

I found that the community on brilliant.org can be quite toxic. I was a member for awhile, but quit due to the people on the site.
