user00005··on When did Google get so weird?
That scam-detector site gives my personal portfolio website a 15.8/100. It is a basic static site with no scripting, registered for years, uses https, no tracking, no cookies, etc. Literally the most simple, personable, least scam-like website I could create.
user00005··on AI-generated posters don’t have to be horrible
Going to these events sounds like too much work. Couldn't AI just give me a summary of the event? It could even play some AI music similar the band that performed.
user00005··on Canada welcomes EU proposal to become 'associate member'
Are European retail banks going to be allowed to operate in Canada? Are the Canadians going to put quotas and tariffs on European dairy? Does Canada certify Airbus jets?
user00005··on There's a 100% Chance AI Agents Are Ruining the Internet
Yes, the bot detection wait IS starting to get out of hand. As for solving a puzzle, I just exit the page and move on with my day.
user00005··on We must pace the frontier
I noticed recently that I can use Deepseek for many general tasks and save loads of money on tokens.

I wonder if there is any correlation.

user00005··on Tim Cook Sold Out Steve Jobs (2025)
I did a DDG search for "apple advertising". The summary under the page link says:

> Reach customers where only Apple Ads can take you

ads.apple.com clearly promotes exclusive access to advertise to Apple users on Apple devices.

user00005··on State of the Map 2026
The iD editor built into the openstreetmap.org site is really easy to use. Sign up. Navigate to where your trails are. At the top left of the page, hit 'Edit'. At the top of the map area, select the Add Feature > 'Line'. Left click on the map to start drawing your line. Press escape on your keyboard to quit drawing. You will be prompted to select a feature type, which you'll probably want a Path or Foot Path (click the 'i' icon next to the feature for more information from the wiki which is very helpful).

Keep in mind no changes are made until you commit them using the 'Save' button at the top right of the map area. You also have 'Undo' available. You can also make changes to your line before saving. Right clicking the line or one of the nodes on the line will give additional options (such as being able to continue drawing your line).

Hit 'Save', add a descriptive Changeset Comment and add your source (usually aerial imagery).

If the trail is tree-covered and not visible on the map, you may have used GPS to record the track. In that case you would want to use something like the JOSM desktop editor that has more capability. It can import GPX files, etc.

user00005··on EPA says power for data centers can sidestep pollution laws
Thank you. This seems like a pretty straight-forward clarification of current law. The current thread title (OP said taken from Reuters) saying this side-steps the law seems misleading.
user00005··on Worst-case glacial lake flood scenarios in a transboundary Himalayan basin 2022
> not build or populate known hazardous areas.

The ultra narrow valley surrounded by steep walls should set off one's self preservation senses.

It did when I saw the first video from this disaster. Normally you don't hang out too long in a couloir.

user00005··on Nvidia agrees to acquire Hugging Face for $13B
For the longest time 10-bit color was only available on their professional cards. All it took was a driver update to unlock it on their consumer cards.
user00005··on Starbase, LA
Interesting article but not too thorough. Here is more about that contractor:

user00005··on Apple Releases New Polishing Cloth
I'm stocking up now before the data centers start buying them all up.
user00005··on Apple introduces M6 and M5 Ultra for a big leap in performance and AI compute
My example is I'm looking for a new media creation machine to replace my homebuilt PC from 2015. Since that old machine can't run Windows 11 and also because Apple storage is so expensive, my idea is to turn the PC into a Linux storage machine with a 10G NIC. Then I should just be able to edit off of the storage instead of worrying about caching it locally.

The prices are ridiculous though. I may just keep rolling with my Windows 10 setup.

Upvote the issue if so.

user00005··on Flock updates privacy, accountability, security, and transparency safeguards
In Osmand+ you can go to Menu > Configure Map > POI overlay and select Surveillance.

It shows not only ALPRs but all of the other surveillance nodes.

user00005··on Flock updates privacy, accountability, security, and transparency safeguards
The only acceptable change is the removal of these cameras.

I can't go walk my dog around the neighborhood without looking up and seeing police accessible cameras. They can track my movements with no probable cause and no warrants.

user00005··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
All of this is my fault.

I decided to start learning programming about 6 years ago as a possible new career path. The universe was not going to have that so AI was created.

user00005··on Windows 11's built-in Weather app wastes more than 1 GB of RAM
This is the type of discussion I come to HN for.

Some kind of weather app challenge would be fun. Vote for the best balance of features vs efficiency.

user00005··on Fastmail offers EU data region
The local government cannot get access to the servers in Amsterdam?

I use Fastmail but just consider it safe from third party advertisers. If I wanted safety from governments I would use something else, or at least encrypt my email contents.

user00005··on Nashville uses eminent domain to block data center near zoo
There is a medical office building near my house along my walking route. It has a fancy, detached, fully enclosed generator building. When the generators are running the place emits a really high-pitched whine.

I can hear it approaching from a couple blocks away. I'm sure my dog and other animals hear it much better than me.

user00005··on EU Age Verification Project Mandates Hardware-Bound Attestation
I searched this page for 'fascist', 'fascism', 'far left', and 'liberal' and there were no results.

A surprising little amount of criticism considering the rhetoric in any political right adjacent threads on this website. There are three mentions of 'trump'.

user00005··on AI poster wins Ohio State Fair contest
I create visual graphics for a living. I know my limits and stay in my lane. I wish AI would do the same because its style is vomit inducing.

I like entry number 3 and number 5. Five has a great punch of color it just feels like the 'frame' needed a little more finish work.

It is the worst part of it. The good thing is there are $500 models offered which minimizes how much money you have to send to google.
user00005··on The iPhone Upgrade Program is being replaced by Apple Upgrade
Well, Apple did just hit a 5 trillion market cap with a PE ratio of 41.

With hardware prices increasing, selling financially challenged people on 'cheap' monthly payments seem like one way to keep the stock price pumped at these levels.

I guess they are one of the good trillion corporations though?

user00005··on The growing vigilante movement to knock out Flock surveillance cameras
I'm proud to have mapped an impressive amount of cameras. You see a lot of things on a bicycle.

I also add non ALPR cameras. There are multiples more of those. I see no reason those can't detect license plates either.

user00005··on Tile's security is so bad it's a feature for stalkers
I'm arguing the tradeoff of possible convenience isn't worth it.

Tile is owned by Life360. The original article talks about Life360 selling your data to advertisers. Let's look at what the Tile app wants to collect from you: photos and videos, location, app activity, messages, personal info. They say 'no data is shared with third parties'. Does that include the parent company Life360 that does sell data with third parties?

user00005··on Tile's security is so bad it's a feature for stalkers
It isn't that difficult to just not lose things.

People love to over complicate their lives with technology, giving up money and privacy in the process.
