up_and_up··on We Can’t Let John Deere Destroy the Idea of Ownership
> I am in my early 30's and I guarantee I live to see the death of the actual family farm.

Maybe the small corn and soybean farms. Which is a race to the bottom anyway.

Small farms are booming here in MI but they are all either in veggies, mixed livestock systems, fruit, dairy or specialty crops of some sort.

Small farmers need to think outside the box, adjust to the changing times and maximize their ROI/acre.

up_and_up··on Why We Are No Longer Developing for the iPad
If you ever need to use Postgres I recommend using the gui http://www.psequel.com/ which is a pretty decent port of Sequel Pro to the PG world.
up_and_up··on Mighty Rio Grande Now a Trickle Under Siege
I moved to Michigan partly for this reason. Plenty of water. Long term.

We wanted room to stretch out and grow a huge garden.

> going to be enjoying a hell of a resurgence

Its already happening. A lot of young people are moving here, buying a nice house for cheap and working remotely. Lot's of small entrepreneurs cropping up.

up_and_up··on To Raise Productivity, Let More Employees Work from Home (2014)
I have worked 100% remote for the past 3 years and am way more productive at work and at home.

It takes discipline though to ignore issues at home and keep delivering.

Another key is to find an organization that is `Results Driven` vs politics `I see you in your chair` driven and that everyone there embraces a remote work culture.

up_and_up··on Ask HN: What are you doing to improve your health?
> ...who have been sitting at their computers...

> ...sitting down all day...

I am 32. I noticed after years of sitting down that my back and hips began to ache and my body started feeling oldish.

So I recently (two months ago) switched to a standing desk and feel really good. Back pain went away and I feel engaged and on point all day long. I do sit down for lunch and do a couple stretch breaks to break things up but in general I am sold and dont plan to 'sit at a desk all day' for a long time.

up_and_up··on Ask HN: Existing Civil Fee/Fine Payments Need Innovation
Yes, following a non-violent protest.

The police charged a group of us (with batons out etc), punched and tackled me and threw me in a paddy wagon. After a good cop/bad cop type interview I sat in jail all night.

I ended up only having like a $300 fine for a traffic violation or something since I was on my bike.

This happened in Santa Cruz, CA in 2001.

up_and_up··on We Should Have a Better Condom by Now
I recommend this company: https://thisisl.com/

You buy one, they give one away model. They also use less toxic ingredients in general.

up_and_up··on Ask HN: Former freelance client screwed me. Having trouble moving on. Advice?
Maybe try something like: http://olddebts.com/

You have the date of the last invoice no? With something like Old Debts it will at least hit their credit rating if they don't pay up. I recently had success with this and got money out of a client.

That unpaid balance will follow them for a long time and they will have to resolve the issue with you.

Beyond getting your money back I wouldnt take revenge by going negative publicly and creating drama.

up_and_up··on Akido Labs (YC W15) Provides an API Layer for Hospital App Developers
Nice Work!

I am part of a startup that needs this like yesterday.

Who can I email regarding this?

up_and_up··on The Science of Near-Death Experiences
Anecdotally speaking, I have had 2 out of body experiences which were extremely vivid. Think about if your consciousness could be ejected outside and above your body somehow and you were looking down at your physical self. One experience was while awake meditating and the other was while sleeping. No drugs involved etc.

While these were not technically NDE's, it definitely opened up for me the possibility that an NDE is potentially possible and that more research should go into this.

up_and_up··on Breastfeeding 'linked to higher IQ'
> but a lot of the nurses and midwives we met along the way felt no compunction in making my wife feel like a failure as a mother and human being because of this

That is absolutely horrible, sorry you had that experience.

My wife was in the same situation with our first, basically she anatomically did not have enough tissue to generate the volume of milk required. Luckily we were able to get donor milk and rely on this technology: http://www.lact-aid.com/. Amazingly she was able to build enough tissue so that by our 3rd kid we have not used any donor milk at all.

up_and_up··on Apple Watch Battery
Charging this thing every day will be it's achilles heel.

I don't have to charge my phone everyday.

up_and_up··on Data-Crunching Indian Recipes
Interesting read!

My wife practices ayurveda so we eat a lot of Indian food.

In terms of the flavor profiles they mention in the article, ayurveda has a concept of the 6 tastes: sweet, sour, salty, pungent, astringent and bitter. A well-balanced meal should include all the tastes.

I am not sure how much ayurveda has influenced "Indian" style cooking, but I assume quite a bit. Maybe someone else can weigh in on it.

And yes it does require quite a number of ingredients.

Example, the breakfast I just made included:

Poha (flattened rice), mushrooms, coconut flakes, onions, green beans, almonds, potatoes, apples, cilantro, mustard seeds, hing, turmeric powder, cumin powder, salt, lime, chilis, coconut oil

Took about 20 mins to prepare.

up_and_up··on US Weather Radar
I generally just use the NOAA full resolution loop: http://radar.weather.gov/Conus/full_loop.php

This plus a big monitor, my kids think they are in a weather command center ;)

up_and_up··on Open Listings (YC W15) Is Helping Homebuyers Hack Real Estate
What DB are you pulling from? Is this self curated?

I tried add locations for `Santa Cruz`, `Santa Barbara` and `Mendicino County` and got "No listings in this area yet."

up_and_up··on Side projects
> the IT ecosystem is broken and IT companies are leveraging a huge value from OSS without providing enough back to pay developments of more OSS.

This!

Not only IT companies but VC's and startup entrepreneurs all rave about how fast and easy it is to develop and get a MVP out the door these days compared to year ago.

What % of their tech stock is OSS that they leveraging for FREE?! Not only that but if you run into a bug, you can even submit an issue ticket directly on github and get a dev to respond and potentially fix your issue for FREE!

Obviously, the pure technology is not the sum of startup execution, but I wonder how many of these people made huge $$$ without donating a nickle to the OSS projects that provided the backbone of their entire technology stack!

up_and_up··on A Tiny Minority of Elite Grad Schools Produce Most Tenured Academics
Until you need a tenured job, then your bus heads to bumfuck wherever. That's one point made in the study and one of the major reasons I dropped out of grad school.
up_and_up··on The Software Revolution
Wouldn't that just cause more inflation?
up_and_up··on Ask HN: How do you find freelance/contract gigs?
I have been moonlighting/contracting on the side for a couple years now: http://www.featlabs.com

I drum up work by:

* Posting myself on the Monthly HN Whois hiring Freelancers thread (1st of month)

* http://www.authenticjobs.com/

* Attending and doing talks at meetups - got a recent retainer from doing this.

* Old contacts pinging me about projects (rare)

Odesk and Elance, IMHO, are not worth my time. It is a race to the bottom honestly.

I get at least 3 hits a month from my HN posting of which one is solid enough to move forward with in some fashion. Since its part time I dont need more than two clients at a time.

up_and_up··on Obama to Propose Paying Community College Tuition for Some
> I would say that most people in community college don't really want to be there.

Odd. That wasn't my experience at all.

I went to Cabrillo College, a community college in Aptos, CA.

Great school, inspiring profs (many with PhD's), students were generally engaged and excited to be there.

I transferred to Berkeley, did well there (felt well-prepared) and saved a heck of a lot of money a long the way. Zero debt post graduation.

I highly recommend Community College, albeit make sure good transfer options exist.

I have heard of people transferring the Stanford and Yale from Cabrillo, but maybe it's just an exception.

up_and_up··on Meditation study shows changes associated with awareness, stress (2011)
It's like "I've never run before, hey let's go run a marathon right now."

I recommend starting with 15-20 sessions once a day. Just like a startup, you can always attempt to scale things up later once you get a handle on things.

up_and_up··on Faced with change, an all-female indie dev team evolves to a higher form (2013)
> I’m certain that if I had children, I would be failing at my job.

Quality not quantity.

I work as an engineer for an NYC startup and have 3 kids. No, its not easy, but yes you need to reset your priorities. Life becomes more focused on fewer activities. Once the kids get a bit bigger its not as time intensive.

I work roughly 6:30am - 8:30am and then 10am - 5pm M-F.

I have many other friends who are engineers at fast moving companies with 2,3,4 or more kids. Its definitely doable.

If your company is asking you to work hours and hours maybe there is something wrong with their product development process or business plan.

Stop worrying and start procreating!

up_and_up··on How to Hire and Build a Remote Team
http://www.authenticjobs.com has a remote search option.

There's also http://www.jobmote.com which seems to be a decent aggregated list.

I actually found a great remote job off of jobs.github.com. The job was listed with the location `anywhere`
