unparagoned··on Several people fired after clampdown on speech over Charlie Kirk shooting
Weren’t pretty much all the engravings game related?

Was there like a song in a playlist that had like 50 followers the only link?

In some aspects it might be worse. Temperatures are much higher which have their own risks. Plus you have the danger relating to the chemicals in akin to popcorn lung.
unparagoned··on Large language models often know when they are being evaluated
I think people are overpromorphazing humans. What's does it mean for a human to "know" they are seeing "Halle Berry". Well it's just a single neuron being active.

"Single-Cell Recognition: A Halle Berry Brain Cell" https://www.caltech.edu/about/news/single-cell-recognition-h...

It seems like people are giving attributes and powers to humans that just don't exist.

unparagoned··on Caffeine Keeps Your Brain "Awake" Even While You Sleep, Study Finds
Caffeine has a long half life. Some experts recommend you stop by 11am. Not everyone knows that
unparagoned··on Why it is (nearly) impossible that we live in a simulation
When we simulate the weather we don’t simulate stuff at the physics level.
unparagoned··on The Seven-Year Rule
You mentioned smart people and I wondered who you were talking about. Then you said Sam Harris who has a reputation for being a clueless idiot in philosophy circles.

Most philosophers are compatibilists, since that’s a good strong philosophical position. Harris is just saying libertarian free will doesn’t exist, but that’s irrelevant since that’s not what people really mean by the term.

unparagoned··on Woman who tricked her way into men-only Magic Circle allowed in
There are various reasons that female only groups might need protection that don’t apply to males. So yes you might expect different views.
unparagoned··on Gödel's theorem debunks the most important AI myth – Roger Penrose [video]
There was a study where they trained a model to lie. When they looked at what was happening internally they could see it knew the truth but just switched things at the outer nodes to lie.
unparagoned··on Gödel's theorem debunks the most important AI myth – Roger Penrose [video]
Ok, you are saying that a map is different than the territory. That a simulation is meaningfully different.

Do you deny that you could be in a simulation right now, in the matrix? What you actually think are are molecules of oxygen are actually simulated molecules. That there is no way for you to every tell the difference.

unparagoned··on "A computer can never be held accountable"
Also in the justice system, a judge can be racist, and the sentence they give has been show to be related with how hungry they are, etc.

Would I rather be at the whims of how hungry somone is, or a model that can be tested and evaluated.

unparagoned··on US will ban cancer-linked Red Dye No. 3 in cereal and other foods
But isn’t it true. As in it’s not the chemicals in tea that causes throat cancer but the hot water.

This provides useful insight in that you should cool down tea/coffee before drinking

unparagoned··on BYD is automaker with the most R&D staff
So you’ve never had a product update. Do you do your own service on the car to prevent garages from doing any updates?
unparagoned··on Journal that published faulty black plastic study removed from science index
The flame retardants aren’t there on purpose. If they had the choice there wouldn’t be any in these plastics.

It’s funny that this article makes a mistake in its reporting. There wasn’t an error in the levels. But just how they compared it to the guidlines
unparagoned··on Alignment faking in large language models
There could be a million reasons for the behaviour in the article, so I’m not too convinced of their argument. Maybe the paper does a better job.

I think a more convincing example was where they used fine tuning to make a llm lie. They then look at some of the inner nodes. They could tell the llm knew the truth internally but switched outputs right at the end to lie.

No founder is going to pay too much attention to what happens if they go bankrupt. They will be focused more on succeeding. Anyone that takes this into account probably deserves to go bankrupt

unparagoned··on California Discourages Schools from Offering Advanced Middle School Math (2023)
I wanted to do further maths in my own time but my school wouldn’t let me. But then all the top universities entrance exams required further maths to even understand the questions.

>Why don’t they create 10,000 separate space-times?

How do we know it doesn’t? The whole wavefunction collapse and single world is an untestable and unprovable assumption.

unparagoned··on Why don't they compose music like Bach any more?
If the music was actually really good and people liked it then the money would be there.

Maybe Bach style music isn’t really a good as modern music.

unparagoned··on A "new" part of the human body, the interstitium

unparagoned··on The big lie about sleep
Studies show that those with worst sleep have worse health and sleep habits.

So it’s the persons decision to not have good health habits which result in poorer health and poorer sleep. The article has got causation mixed up.

unparagoned··on The big lie about sleep
This is such a toxic take. There actually is a lot people can do to help their sleep. Framing it like they did makes it seem like there is nothing people can do.

Then I think they got causation mixed up. Studies show that night owls have less self control, worse sleep and health habits.

unparagoned··on KeePassXC Debian maintainer has removed all network features
People always crap over LastPass, but when you ask them what they do, it’s some elaborate process relying on thousands of no name packages and devs.
unparagoned··on What can LLMs never do?
Neural nets can approximate any function.

A large enough llm with memory is turning complete.

So theoretically I don’t think there is anything they can never do.
