unkown-unknowns··on ZFSin: A Windows kernel-mode ZFS driver
I bought an install disc for Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) back when that was the current version.

Seems they have it in the offical online store still actually: https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-sno...

However when I inquired at an authorized store about a later version after it came out they said that it was not available on disc and you had to buy it via the Mac App Store which means you need to have OS X in the first place but I'm not sure if they were talking about their own store or in general.

I'm on mobile right now so not going to bother finding out what other versions can be bought on disc media from the official online store but if someone else would like to chime in with more links that'd be welcome.

I come across these once a year or so on the net but when I need them I never can remember them because it's not so often that I need them

Maybe but the OP link has links to both of those and summarizes quite neatly what this is IMO.
unkown-unknowns··on Linux ransomware in the wild
Out of the box it'll probably tell you "Client is not authorized to connect to server" if you try to run anything X11 as another user.

However it should be possible to configure your system such that it doesn't like such: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/xorg#X_clients_started_...

unkown-unknowns··on HolyJit: A New Hope
I saw a couple of dead comments from him here on HN earlier today or yesterday evening actually. First time in a long while I'd come across his comment so that was kind of random.

Edit: The comments were posted 6 hours ago, check his user page https://news.ycombinator.com/threads?id=TempleOS

unkown-unknowns··on HolyJit: A New Hope
When I first saw the name "HolyJit" On Reddit I thought it was going to be something new from the TempleOS guy.
unkown-unknowns··on MNT Reform: DIY portable computer
Someone in the comments linked a cheaper alternative: http://abusemark.com/store/index.php?main_page=product_info&...

Seems that the firmware for this cheaper alternative is not open source but from what I gather it doesn't need any proprietary drivers on Linux. Since it interfaces over Display Port and USB I don't think it should be able to do anything nasty so the closed firmware doesn't matter much IMO.

It's not clear to me whether either of the one you linked and the one I linked has touch support.

unkown-unknowns··on MNT Reform: DIY portable computer
That link has an interesting write-up which includes a story about a computer he made himself using a micro-controller and then it goes on to talk about making the OS for the Raspberry Pi and also has some criticism of the Raspberry Pi. Would recommend reading.

unkown-unknowns··on ChrysaLisp – A 64-bit Lisp OS with GUI
> rumor that Brendan Eich initially intended to use Scheme instead of JS, although this never happened

I wonder what'd have happened had he done so. Would it have grown to the size that JavaScript is at today, or would it have lost to something similar to JavaScript that some other browser would have implemented?

unkown-unknowns··on The /bin/true Command and Copyright (1990)
> Gnu coreutils wants all the command line utilities to respond to --true and --version. The version number is that of the coreutils package,

You meant to say --help and --version.

unkown-unknowns··on Arabic characters found woven into burial costumes from Viking boat graves
I don't think most people in Scandinavia has any problem accepting this. Pretty much everyone in the world who knows about Vikings know that raping and plundering is what they did for the most part when they set sail to distant shores.

Nice to see the prices of most of the things. How much has the car itself and all of the additions cost you total up until now, and how far into the two year period are you?
unkown-unknowns··on Ask HN: Learning NoSQL, papers and books
I found the book CouchDB: The Definitive Guide to be a good introduction when I first read it some years ago. I bought the dead tree edition but they have an online version that I think may have been updated.

unkown-unknowns··on Redesigning the smartphone dial pad
I downloaded the app because I wanted to be of service, but I promptly uninstalled it when It wouldn't let me continue unless I typed exactly 10 digits. In my country phone numbers are 8 digits. In some countries they might have more than 10. Requiring exactly 10 digits is beyond ridiculous. Hopefully it's just an oversight on the part of the person that made it. Uninstalled, but willing to try it again if this issue is amended.
unkown-unknowns··on Strategies for offline PGP key storage
Speaking of plotters, consider engraving the QR code in aluminum instead of having it on paper. If there's any hacker space nearby where you live they might have CNC equipment that they will let you borrow and instruct you how to use.

Is number two on that list about migrating something to Rust or from Rust?
unkown-unknowns··on Streams: a new general purpose data structure in Redis
It might be useful to be able to query by server time regardless of whether your client clock is in sync. You retrieve some set of data and the next time you can ask the server to give you everything newer than x, where x was the highest time stamp you got from the server previously.
