univalent··on Anxiety: An Interactive Story
Thank you! Yoga is not an option because of balance problems but meditation did help quite a lot.
univalent··on Anxiety: An Interactive Story
I visualize my anxiety as a snake. Similar to a desert or rattlesnake with stripes and sand on it. Starts at the base of my spine and curves around and its head is at my brain. Sometimes it crushes my spine, sometimes it bites my brain. And the thoughts that it brings to me are much much worse than what's in this story.

This red fox cartoon and its warnings seems almost a blessing compared to what I go through :( Help...

univalent··on Depression is increasing among Americans reaching middle age
Wait, 40 counts as middle aged? I guess I'm middle aged. Now THAT is truly depressing.
univalent··on Apple to Close Stores in Eastern District of Texas to Fight Patent Trolls
Good, I hope this draws the attention of voters in the district.

My employer (very large) was sued twice in this court. Both times by trolls. The lawyers basically described this judge as running a ‘cottage industry’ and were unwilling to even set foot in that courtroom.

The patents the lawsuits were based on were insane. One of them was on any image compression for medical images which was somehow granted in 2005 (that’s another problem). There was reams of prior art but of course we settled. I was very low on the totem pole of the company but it still pissed me off to no end.

univalent··on An open letter to FB, Twitter, Instagram regarding algorithms and my son's birth
Thanks! I hadn't read that before and it was very thoughtful.
univalent··on Crowdfunding Backer Patented My Project
This is such revolting behavior. Props to the author for their calm and perseverance. I'm in a rage just from reading the article.
univalent··on How Dad's Stresses Get Passed Along to Offspring
Thanks! Yes, Zoloft has been a God send. I cannot imagine functioning without it. I'm shocked when there are studies that claim that SSRIs have little to no effect.
univalent··on How Dad's Stresses Get Passed Along to Offspring
As a dad with 2 girls who's been on SSRI medication for anxiety since I was a teenager, this makes me sad ;(
univalent··on M.B.A. Applications Decline at Harvard, Wharton, Other Elite Schools
I went to the Haas part time program. I had some Cs in my undergrad statement that I did not have to re-take. I'm surprised they said that.
univalent··on A doctor in Bangladesh has found a simple way to treat infant pneumonia
Absolutely brilliant! Take a bow, Dr. Chisti.
univalent··on Asian-American Students Suing Harvard Over Admissions Win Justice Dept. Support
So maybe have 2 tests. A second one that is harder and spreads students out more. I was just questioning the value of a test that 'normalizes' student scores having no distribution at the top end.
univalent··on Asian-American Students Suing Harvard Over Admissions Win Justice Dept. Support
I think the problem lies with SATs/GREs/GMATs. The tests (especially SAT, GRE) are ludicrously simple. I'm your run of the mill IIT-an and placed 98th and 99th percentile without breaking a sweat in the GRE when it came time for grad school. I think I maxed 2 of the 3 sections and was 98th percentile in both. What's the point of a test like that? Thousands of people max/get to the highest percentile and it becomes useless as a variable. Why not follow the model of the JEE exam instead of the SAT (a different variant of the exam for each specialization). If the exam is harder, the distribution of students is more spread out. You can rank them nationwide. Not being a jerk, I'm honestly curious why people like middle school math problems in a grad school exam? https://jeemain.nic.in/webinfo/Public/Home.aspx
univalent··on Former Tesla employee claims he is a whistleblower
What a mess. Even if Musk decided to go the route of suing this person why did he publicize it himself? What is to be gained for him in the court of public opinion?
univalent··on I wish mum's phone was never invented
I use a timer app called Timeglass and have timers for 'social' 'news' etc. And an app called Moment which tracks pickups and total time.
univalent··on I wish mum's phone was never invented
I was definitely addicted to my phone right around the last election cycle. Podcasts, reddit politics threads, other social media, websites, you name it. Luckily, its an easy habit to kick. I use timers and a tracking app on my phone to monitor pickups and screen time spent. I try to hit 12 hours between opening any social media apps, 6 hours between opening any news apps etc. I've managed to get it down to under an hour a day.
univalent··on In India, high-pressure exams are creating a student suicide crisis
There are no quotas in IITs or BITS. Just SC/ST which is like 1-2%
univalent··on In India, high-pressure exams are creating a student suicide crisis
Me too :( I'm almost 40 and I have the same nightmare.
univalent··on Boundless Mind Wants to Fix America's Smartphone Addiction
I've been using a timer app on iOS 'Timeglass'. I have multiple timers for social apps, news, email checking at home etc. I've managed to cut down quite a lot by hitting simple targets like 'only check news once every 6 hours' and so on. Free, cheap solution I'd recommend to everyone.
univalent··on The IRS collects data on Coinbase account holders
Asking for a friend. If X buys a few bitcoin and then transfers it to a gambling site and proceeds to lose it all does stupid X (the goddamn idiot) owe any taxes? The only way X can show that he/she didn't retain the bitcoin is to show transfers to the gambling website (transfers in and no transfers out, because as I said earlier, X is a dumbass).
univalent··on Ex-Google recruiter: I was fired because I resisted “illegal” diversity efforts
I feel I must respond since I also moved from Dallas to SFO. Equivalent salary will be around 230ish for your 150. You may still struggle to buy a house because of competition. Just a head's up.
univalent··on Cinema’s greatest scene: ‘Casablanca’ and ‘La Marseillaise’
I cry every time I see this scene. Great unpacking of a powerful few minutes of cinema. I could hear the song thundering in my ear just from reading the article.
univalent··on Sandra Boynton's whimsical animals have been delighting kids for 40 years
We love these books for our two toddler girls! They are a treasure. Our personal favorite is 'Doggies' which is so simple but is amazing for everyone to bark along to (including the dogs in the house)
univalent··on Do Millennial Men Want Stay-At-Home Wives?
I guess I'm in this category. My wife quit her job when we had our second kid. It was our decision. She's planning on going back to work when the younger one turns 4. Parent > Paid Caregiver for taking care of a child. Could be either parent.
univalent··on India's tech industry panics over U.S. plans to change high-skilled visas
This is actually a good step. Eliminate cost arbitrage as motive for hiring foreign workers. Hire to fill genuine gaps in the labor pool. I don't see any downside and I'm an Indian in the US.
univalent··on Uber continues self-driving vehicle testing in SF in defiance of DMV
I wonder if these vehicles are programmed to pull over when cops flash their lights/sirens? Do they accept tickets? Can they be towed without the vehicle rebelling (har!)?

Interested in how enforcement by the DMV would work beyond working with Uber at the corporate level.

univalent··on Dell Closes $60B Merger with EMC
I tried to buy DVMT and couldn't get any.
univalent··on The implosion of the daily fantasy industry
Good. I probably saw/heard their ads thousands of times (no exagg.) over a few month period. They annoyed me so much I wouldn't give them any business even if I found their product fun (which I didn't).
univalent··on Fighting Cancer
Powerful article. Something I can share from my own ordeal. When you first get diagnosed most people are strong and defiant "I'm going to beat this thing!". It is the following weeks and months, the follow up scans that show the darn thing is back or not reduced that eventually wear you down. If you know someone that's afflicted please keep in touch throughout or space out your acts of kindness. I found that initially everyone wanted to help (an outpouring) and in later months some help would have been useful.
univalent··on Jumpers (2003)
I really should not have read this article. I don't know what it is about depression that makes you want to end it all (even though I think about it all the damn time).
univalent··on The Nest Cam Outdoor is a $199 camera with an easy-to-install magnetic base
Monthly subscription fee? No, thanks. I'll just run my own NVR for no cost.
